This is a cheap design for mass quick kilts used in an annual Highland Games event. In no way is this supposed to be an official kilt. Thanks for the comments. And please for all you super serious kilt experts have fun with your own designs.

You are absolutely correct. This is nothing like a real kilt. If it is supposed to be a feileadh mhor or belted plaid ,again it is wrorg. The material should be 60" wide by 5 yards long(approx) laid on the ground and pleated up to the width of the wearer leaving 2 ends plain. A belt is then put underneath.The wearer then lies down on it folds the plain ends over the front of the body fastens the belt .Now stand up. The material hanging down the back can be tucked in around the waist or pinned on the shoulder. For many hundreds of years the FEILEADH MHOR or big blanket - PLAID means BLANKET not the pattern of the material - was worn by highlanders and was simply a way of carring that blanket around in a convenient way.

Great crash course for a beginner/faire garb, which is exactly what I need. The few pages I've found so far online have proven fairly confusing; if I'm going to go to the effort of hand-stitching with REAL tartan, I'm going to go to a professional. This is just what I was looking for. Thanks for filming it!

Thank you so much for this detailed and clear video. I need to throw together a costume kilt for my teenage son's school presentation, with little free time in my schedule. This is perfect. Should have it finished tonight. He found the tartan he wanted in the store, and I'm about to set to work. I really appreciate your video giving me confidence to tackle this.

I just want to say thank you SO much for making this. I've been reading up on making kilts for the rene faire for my bf so I'm not the only one dressed up and the directions out there are sooo confusing. This was very straight forward and I plan to come back to it when I start making my kilt. thank you thank you thank you!

My great aunt was a kiltmaker and she always said that when pleating the fabric, the pattern should match, i.e. when lying flat you should be able to see the complete pattern. This means that some pleats can me about a couple of inches deep and others could be as much as six inches deep. Maybe I haven't explained it very well, but if you look at the back of any Scottish kilt you can see the whole tartan pattern.

This would be called "pleating to the sett"
@Liekco
@Liekco 13 лет назад
@ABWEndon There are 2 ways for kiltpleating, pleated to the sett and pleated to the stripe. In the video the kilt is pleated to the stripe. Pleated to the sett means you repeat the pattern so that it does look like the unpleated cloth. When pleating to the stripe, the pleats are folded so that one particular line is centred on every pleat.
@grammaringgod
@grammaringgod 12 лет назад
that was often a matter of preference. many dress kilts were made as you describe, called "pleating to sett". however for military kilts, a stripe in the pattern was chosen to center each pleat on. the latter method was called "pleating to stripe".

you can pleat the whole thing leaving 16 or 18 inches at either end and just make the pleats 3 or 4 inches and fold it leaving say 1 inch anyway you might have to play with it until you get it right then sew it the same way and have your kilt look like a normal store bought kilt.Either way, I love them. anything kilt suits me fine.

That is a brave helart kilt. No one wears it like that. A walking kilt is 3-4 yards of fabric while a great kilt is about 7-12 yards because it doubles as a blanket.

@Renaissancefairemom ...judging by the small amount of cloth, it seems hes making the Queen Victoria version cotton Kilt. it is not the much larger traditional wool Belted Kilt with big pockets. no sewing and ironing required. a belted kilt is also a tent, blanket, windbreak, and a stretcher if needed.

I'm really not clear on the motivation for your comment. I'm sorry you were rejected by someone who previously made poor partnering choices. That doesn't mean all women do. It also begs the question - are you perhaps "shopping in the wrong store" (pardon the term) for women. There are plenty of single, educated, down to earth women (w/o children) out there (and NOT slutty) and who made good decisions about their dating habits. We do exist. And men who sew kilts are on my "good" list :)

For Ren Faire I wouldn't suggest sewing it ,look for instructions on how to wear a belted plaid ,Great Kilt or Fileadh Mor. Its actually rather simple and very fun. Make sure you have the right accessories first though, a pennacular brooch to bind it over the shoulder and a good four inch wide belt to hold it up with lol.

Not a bad video, but I am wondering why you hid the 'verticle' stripe in the plaid inside the pleats and not adjusted them so some or all of the verticle stripe would be on the edge of each pleat? It's all a matter of taste, I suppose. I always thought 'pleating to the stripe' exposed some or all of the stripe and not hid the stripe. Thanks!

Again not sure on your motivation for commenting. I am certainly not putting men into a box defined by Western Society's gender roles and stereotypes. In fact, I'm doing the opposite by commending these gents. If you've got a bone to pick with women about how we -allegedly- view men with alternative fashion choices, you're fighting the wrong person AND in the wrong forum. Please take your rhetoric somewhere else. Meanwhile- kudos to Tidefront for being awesome - which was original point.

Actually, I would much rather it be sewn and secured for the fair. I'm in AZ and it is hot and windy. The last thing I want is for his kilt to fall off. We're not looking for "proper" just something that fits in until we both have the funds to actually buy better quality. It isn't a crime to make sure the pleating doesn't come undone when we'll be out all day and driving for at least 2 hours in the first place. No one at the faire is going to kill us for sewing our own stuff . . .

I dont see how that fits properly when complete and wrappe around the body. It would look like you are wearing a bath towel straight out of the shower. It should have a small curvature along the top to wrap around the waist properly. Like when you make a shirt and make a straight neck hole this makes the shirt tight in the front and looks like a potato sack with a hole on top
@deaconblue9038
@deaconblue9038 12 лет назад
That would be great if you are doing a Halloween costume ,but for real kilts there's a bit more sewing to the pleats,liner,flap etc. Also I've found rather than cutting off the excess to size, fold it in half before pleating. Leave the folded edge for the bottom of the kilt,at the top where the selvedge is fold it down towards the inside of the kilt to size. Then sew it and then pleat it and so forth. Makes the kilt thicker,especially good if your not using worsted wool. Thanks for the video.
