In this one, I show you the easy process for making wood inlay rings! I recently bought a brand new lathe, a tool I have wanted longer than I've been into rocks(which is saying something), and figured what better way to break it in than to make some wood rings with stone inlay! We made two opal inlay and one gold tiger eye, but this process can be used for just about any kind of stone! All you need is: wood veneer, a diamond file, cyanoacrylate super glue, a hose clamp, a drill, and sandpaper, and of course your desired stone. These rings have an enormous potential for variety and appearance and are just a blast to make! I hope you all enjoy this one, and I will have another one out very soon!

I think your method works so well because, Opal is usually around 6- 10 percent water, could be up to 21. The super glue dries with humidity. Opal must act as an accelerator. Your very talented Buddy.

So glad you got a lathe Theo! Be careful it's very addictive. Been turning for 5 years now and I can't stop! The lathe was the best investment I made no comparison. The rings came out great, I know your going to be a pro woodturner in no time.

Have you ever cut slices of black walnuts and inlaid the gaps in the shell? It’s a good way to use your fragments. I’ve seen a lot done with coral, turquoise and opal but I think it would be neat to see how other stones turn out in a similar inlay … maybe fire agate, tiger eye, moonstone, etc

Omg. Another awesome project. I think the wood veneer is the best choice for a ring. The dowel ring is more likely to break with the grain. Have you noticed any difference?

TRY using ALUMINUM CAN , CUT OUT A ROLL wrap around treated veneer for more coverage then set clamp.

Hay Theo that's good 1st try of making a ring 💍 with opel I would never of doing that. Here is an Idea you might consider get a 4 jaw chuck for your lathe you can go to Penstate Industries and buy a good 1 I've bought serval years ago its got a lot of extra in the kit it has its own case and Accessories you can drill on this lathe you will need to buy a drill chuck from them but once you have the accessories your all set to go. I've been using my 4 jaw chuck bowls and you can drill pen blanks with this set up and I'm sure you can do other things as well good luck with your rings 💍 and keep posting some more rings 💍
