I have been DWM curious but I always feared manual patching, but in last week I made my first suckless build with st-terminal and it was super fun learning process. I am definitely gonna test DWM when I have free time.

Patching is a little intimidating at first but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad

Good video! I spotted several new ideas -- enough to want to binge watch your other videos and adjust my fairly comfy DWM setup, which hasn't changed for many years. Looks like I'll get some good vim instruction along the way. Looking forward to it.

How to get Brightness & volume controls to work on keyboard with dwm?
@ditchcomfort
@ditchcomfort Год назад
Eh, still no Zsh video 😏 Although I know you don’t use it as your daily shell. Could been very cool to make a series of configure zsh, without any dependencies (Oh-My-Zsh etc.) Yes you can use plugins, but no big framework. I’m still going back and forth with my configuration so I would absolutely enjoy it. Zsh is so big with a bunch of features, so always something to learn or something you don’t really know how to implement. A bunch of files, .zshenv, .zprofile, .zshrc, .zlogin, .zlogout, and all the other files you can/should source as well.
@JakeLinux
@JakeLinux Год назад
I know, it's coming, I will cover zsh.

I have a problem with screen tearing, installed the nvidia driver and still didn't fix it, added SyncToVBlank ir whatever the option is to kernel options and still no result
@JakeLinux
@JakeLinux Год назад
I have never used Nvidia but I believe you can fix this with the following process. Do you have nvidia-settings package installed? If so, try this: (all one command) nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 {ForceFullCompositionPipeline=On}" Then reboot

I am with DWM for over an year and no plans to change it. After trying some tile windows managers this is my end game, at least for now. I am on 6.4 with 14 patches. This time took under 30 minutes to apply all of them.
@JakeLinux
@JakeLinux Год назад
Yeah, once you get the hang of it,.patching is not that big of a deal. Nice work.
@alexal4
@alexal4 Год назад
@@JakeLinux Not only this. Almost all patches worked just out of box, unlike with 6.3 version. Sure, some patching experience does not hurt either.

@@emptybottle1200 My first one was 6.3, took some time to get used to it. I had the same 14 patches with 6.3, but it took much longer to apply them, had to do it in certain order to make it working. With 6.4 it was easy and order did not matter.

Sorry Jake, I am moving to leftwm. My herbstluftwm will still be available, but since I am learning Rust, I figured full immersion is best. Besides, have you checked out leftwm ? The theming is awesome, it is right up your alley.

Traitor! Kidding, use what suits your needs, hope rust goes well for you. I have tried leftwm, it was not quite my cup of tea, but that was a couple of years ago, may give it another look here in the future.

Great video to give others confidence. Save some steps - just edit config.h, and no need to copy config.def.h to config. h. I perceive config.def.h to be the main landing area for patches, which can then migrate to config.h by hand or as you wish. See the dwm customization page. How long until you have your own local git going? :)
@JakeLinux
@JakeLinux Год назад
I agree that would save time but not always save a headache. If you edit config.h and not config.def.h, if you add another patch in the future then copy config.def.h to config.h to build that patch into the binary, you lose any edits you made specifically to config.h alone.
