Making our Water Tight Doors - Building Brupeg EP. 55

This week we needed to seal off our engine room from the accommodation area in the freezer room. We made the stainless dogs that pull the door tight and installed the closed cell foam rubber seal.

nice work again 👍 I'm thinking tho, would it not be better to have the dog a bit longer and fit into a slot in the frame rather than a welded on tab that you could catch on .. sticky out bits are not good in rough weather 🤕
@ProjectBrupeg

HA! I decided to do that, then a Patreon suggested that and now you Bill, great minds think alike.

@mkllove
@mkllove 5 лет назад
@@ProjectBrupeg Same thought, but was going to add that the slot in the lip needs a ramped Y or V shape so there is a bigger slot at first to get the door closed but not fully dogged, and then a ramp leads into a narrower slot to fully secure and seal the door as it compresses the seal. Rather than cutting the lip to get less interference with the doors closing, how about giving the door's hinge side some extra clearance with a smaller, off center hinge pin ? A smaller bolt size could be shimmed or bushed to get a better fit overall...
@royreynolds108
@royreynolds108 5 лет назад
@@mkllove I was going to suggest using the weight of the handles to keep the latches in place and use a ramped or tapered slot in the frame for the dog.. The doors need to be flush when the rubber is compressed to create the seal or a seal won't happen. Hatches and doors on naval vessels that I have seen have locking dogs on both sides of the door (right and left as you look at the door not on the inside and outside of the door). This takes the load or pressure off the hinges when engaged. Less chance the hinges could be damaged when locked. I hope I am not confusing you.
@mikeskelly2356
@mikeskelly2356 5 лет назад
If you like, you can weld a nut into the back of the handles and you can join them with a strap so they both open and close together. Also, bend the corner of the dog up a bit to allow it to 'cam' shut...

Oval holes for, or smaller diameter hinge bolts would allow the dual hinge effect allowing door to close as is!
@richardbohlingsr3490
@richardbohlingsr3490 5 лет назад
I know it's too late now, but all you would have to do is cut the hinges off the wall and add a 1/4" 5mm distance from the wall to the hinge pivot. Move the bolt pins out a 1/4" further from the wall surface. Put door in place and block it in place the measure the distance from the wall to the center of the hinge pin and make the wall hinge this dimension when you drill the hole. Harder to describe than do. The best way is to make the hinge a bolt on u shape so you can add or subtract shims to get the correct compression of the gasket. Just offering a suggestion.

0:01: I've actually done this job, save it was an SS companionway door with "cat flap". Hell of a great find to get such a close fit. 1:58 I recommend "Delrin" inserts for the dogs (as well as the grease, which is a bonus). Delrin is non-conductive HDPE and is slippery. My rudder is aluminum and is separated/isolated from the boat's steel with rings of it. 17:03: Very nice work. My hatch to my engine bay is alloy and two little bronze dogs handle the tie-down duties. The best part are the gas lifts I put in...keeps the hatch open by itself! For the engine room door, you may wish to put a sturdy tab so it can open fully and latch for when you want ventilation in there under way and no one's down there. Great work, guys.

Damien, Jess, Ryan, Very good work on the door handles. They look great. I would recommend that you put nylatron washers between the door sleeve and the nylon nut and between latch and the door sleeve. This will eliminate the steel on aluminum friction and make the handles rotate easier. Jess, thank you for pointing out the puns. I almost missed them. Glad you handled it for me.

Great video I would cut the knife edge off the frame a little bit or slot the hinges so instead of the hole being round it’s oval gives u a bit of movement we use slotted hinges when we have a thick gasket looking good tho
@ProjectBrupeg

Hi Sons, yeah I would have preferred slotted holes but I don’t have the tools to cut that. That said we are changing to a two pack pour in urethane so we should be able to measure and pour the exact height seal needed without any mods to the door our frame

hey do you know there is a company making thick grinding wheels for angle grinders, it allows you to remove so much more metal than flap discs that wear too fast, the company is named norton, the product is named Norzon III, i think this is called a cup wheel. it also allows to clean welds in 90° corners.

Should be able to buy stainless tie rod Basically stainless rod with thread the whole way along Then you can cut it to length as required Usually cheaper as well Or if you can find some solid bar Cut the same D one side then drill and tap for a smaller bolt to hold it together

Should the handle not be vertical when locked rather than horizontal, so vibration will not tend to unlock it ? IE tab and handle at 90 degrees to each other
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 5 лет назад
In my experience these things pull up so tight there’s no way vibration has a chance at moving them. Then again I could be 100% wrong and if that’s the case we will swap them around if needed. The main reason I’ve put them this way around was so Jess can easily reach them

Have you considered hot dip galvanizing mild steel parts rather than stainless to save money? Is that a cost effective option where you are and I would like to hear from anyone with experience with how galvanizing holds up at sea? Also, there are many stainless bolts and pipe fittings and such available on Amazon directly from China and shipping can be hit or miss here in the states, but that may be an option worth checking out to avoid being robbed locally.

I'm sure you've thought about another solution and have a good reason not to pursue it...but instead of retrimming the door with thinner rubber, why can't you move the holes for the door hinge pins 6mm away from the bulkhead? Then there's no stuffing around with the glue and removing it, no trimming the flange, just weld up the hinge and redrill 6mm further away.
@ProjectBrupeg
@ProjectBrupeg 5 лет назад
Hi Marc, I did think about this. The reason I did Mot go that way (and I would have liked to) was tools, I just don’t have the tools that would allow my to drill it in place. I could plasma it but I doubt the result would be very tidy so I never tried.

I was on a similar train of thought, but was actually going to suggest floating hinges - move the hinge flanges a few inches away from the door and then have a 4-6" 'see-saw' with the hinge at one end and a hefty spring like an old valve spring at the other end of the seesaw pushing against the bulkhead - that way the door would always be being pulled tight - other than cutting old hinges off and welding (or even bolting) a new hinge 'pivot point' very little work in situ
