In the Agua Fria National Monument rests an incredible and monumental ancient civilization which is referred to as the people of Perry Mesa. The mesa tops are rich with hundreds of archaeological sites. Some sites consist of 300 plus rooms right on the edge of the mesa top. The culture(s) that occupied Perry Mesa are still unknown, and it seems the mesa tops were abandoned by 1450. While occupation was short lived, the density of sites reveals populations reached a very high number. Early pot hunters report finding mass burials where bodies were stacked on top of each other. Did a local disease sweep through? More professional archaeology needs to be conducted inside Perry Mesa in order for these questions to be answered.
In this video we discuss the Perry Mesa culture, look and an original ceramic pot, and reproduce a Perry Mesa style jar. Enjoy!

There does seem to be a theme in the US South West - 'abandoned abruptly'. The Anisazi and Chaco Canyon are famous, these Perry Mesa people, there's a site in NM, a little east of Tularosa i've worked on, site stretches for miles, an agricultural people of no known affiliation (but there's at least a guess on that one, abandoned the site about the time the Apache first arrived in the area), one i forget the name and location of, SE Utah? where it appeared that the people all just left in a big rush, leaving a bunch of artifacts laying in place, like they literally just dropped everything and ran. Pesky thunderbirds... Nice pots. Reminds me a little of the El Paso brown ware but that stuff is generally pretty coarse, like there's a lot of sand in the clay, doesn't seem to get the 'rock polish' surface treatment and tends to be pretty thick-walled. Would love to know what the original makers would think of your efforts to copy them.

Perry Mesa feels like a melting pot of cultures. I've seen plenty of salado polychrome, roosevelt red, homolovi polychrome and corrugated pottery. I haven't seen any red on buff like you would expect from early Hohokam cultures.

I place a comment here because the comments in the video about sun compass shadow stick ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u3l49zQREcY.html are blocked. It's a big mistake not to tell in the video that this method only works reasonably well around the equinocces (march and september) when the sun rises near the true East. For other dates, is can be completely wrong. The correct way to find the E-W direction is to mark the shadows before and after solar noon. Then the shortest "big" shadow marks South. The real thing is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8TVBJ68pMW8.html

Thanks! I live in an area where the soil is very sandy, not much clay here. I would like to try to fire some pots but need to purchase clay. Do you happen to know the approximate cone temperature you can achieve in an open fire? Is a pit fire hotter or cooler?

What do you think of the possibility of migrating out as a drought set in, as with the Ashiwi and Cibola peoples?
