Making Physical 'Mute' Indicators for Streaming

A friend of mine always forgets to unmute his microphone when streaming, so I decided to make some physical mute indicators for OBS Studio.
I wrote a Python script that runs inside of the OBS scripting console and listens for mute/unmute events for a given audio source. When the 'mute' state of an audio channel is changed, the script sends that state over serial to a microcontroller. The microcontroller then drives a physical indicator alerting the user.

This is fantastic. I wish the GoXLR had this function for its hardware mic mute button. It seems like such an obvious product that I'm surprised there aren't any real off the shelf remote mic mute indicator products available.

I don’t understand how this isn’t an actual product yet. Is this possible to work with discord? There is a lot of times where I’m talking to chat and I forget that I’m muted in discord, this would help a ton. I have 0 knowledge in coding, so if you’re open to commission work, we could definitely figure out something to work out for this!!

Quick and dirty solution is just use the Caps Lock key or Num Lock key to light up a light on your keyboard.

Awesome project! I love it but wondered if it's possible to run a script to show when the default microphone within windows 10 is muted/unmuted? Trying to make my own DIY boom mic live light for gaming/streaming

Thanks, and hi! That's absolutely possible but unfortunately this script won't help you to do it. You'd have to interface with the Windows API instead of with OBS.

You would have to modify the script to fetch the state of the recording using the frontend API. It's possible but you'll need some familiarity with Python to make the necessary changes.

hello, is it possible to use this script in order to make a sort of overlay on your stream to indicate if your mic is muted or not?

It would need to be rewritten to control a source rather than a physical device. Although you could always set your mute/unmute hotkey to show/unshow a source as well - so long as you always mute with the hotkey (and not the mouse) it will work great.

Potentially. It depends if VoiceMeter has an API that reports the muted state of a channel, and you would have to rewrite the script to reference it.

Is there a way to toggle the color of an RGB light rather than turn it off completely? So when the mic is muted it appears red but when it’s live it turns green?

Sure, you'd just need to modify the code on the Arduino.
