Making Plasma Cutting Machine

Track makes cutting metal very easy is accurate and fast. The machine is equipped with two strong electromagnets so that the cut piece is stable and does not move during cutting. I used an old screwdriver 12v I found on the scrap metal. To power the screwdriver and electromagnets I used a 12v 16A dual channel power supply, and a speed controller to control the screwdriver's rotation. Thanks to the adjustable length, we can adjust the machine's distance to the size of the piece to be cut.

"Anyone can make something with GOOD equipment", I recall a machine shop foreman saying in response to complaints about dull end mills and worn out Bridgeports. But, it takes someone truly resourceful to make something like this with drill presses and grinders. Really nicely done! Subscribed.

@FlipLoLz 2 года назад
A lead screw and bar stock, not really that hard to make. But for what it does, it's overly complex, and will just be far more hassle trying to control your level of dross with a potentiometer. The the actual setting it up. You're better off just using a simple guide. I think everyone else watching figured he was working on an x axis gantry setup, for as much as he put into this.
@paulpaintshop103
@paulpaintshop103 2 года назад
@@FlipLoLz For 30+ years I've used a pair of vice grips and a heavy piece of angle iron to achieve the exact same result. And it's quicker to set up and cost free, finding an elaborate expensive way to do a simple task doesn't always pay off.

@chancho00

He did explained that, no need to use those switches since he's using the clutch on the drill, that makes the machine less complicated but still can be added later if he wants.
@Vodichka9
@Vodichka9 3 года назад
All the suggestions about limit switches are completely misplaced. The clutch on the drill is fine to use as the limiting mechanism. Amazing how many bookworms completely miss the simplicity of this design. AND, he got the drill from a scrap heap. I built highly complex injection molds for most of my life, and I know when precision is required, and I know when it isn't. Nothing wrong or deficient in the design. Plasma cutting is not in any way aerospace precision.

@MrWeelliott
@MrWeelliott 2 года назад
I considered this too, but thought of another way of protecting it that would likely be easier: use a cordless drill with a torque setting that just slips when it hits a certain torque. Set it low since this shouldn't actually have to overcome much resistance beyond the stiffness of the Plasma cutter's cable/hose. In my admittedly biased opinion it is an elegant solution. I think this is a great video.

A small tip: When cutting on the band saw, especially flat material, put a wedge under the piece in the vice so the flat material sits at an angle, that way you shorten the amount of material the blade is cutting across. It'll cut through it much faster.

Wouldn't it be cutting through the exact same cross sectional area regardless of orientation?
@edwardlance2379
@edwardlance2379 3 года назад
@@welshdave5263 overall, yes, but with it flat, you are riding the blade on a lot larger surface area at once. Angled, the blade is only engaging a much smaller surface area at any given time. Think of cutting a 2x4 with a hand saw, most cut either at an angle or from the edge, not flat across the width. It's quicker and easier.

@@WorkshopFromScratch I forgot all about being able to use the clutch of the drill to prevent jamming the screw at the end of it's travel. Good idea. Just thought of something else that might be beneficial to your design. That screw is going to get nasty dirty with plasma cutting dust and cause allot of wear. What you could try is to mount a couple of brushes, one on each side of the nut so that the ends of the bristles engage the threads of the screw. As the screw turns the bristles clean out the threads. The brushes would need to be cleaned often but better than wearing out your nut and screw. If you mounted the brushes on a pivot you could swing them away from the screw, blow them off and than swing them back into position. Enjoyed watching this build. Cheers Willy
