Making POTTERY from WILD CLAY // Harvest to Pit Fire 

I've been wayching for years (& finishing my van as you were my inspiration) And I'm old. So I can say this. "Your Mom must have had a heck of a fun time raising you".

Linnea, this is how well known and successful artists are born. I predict that you will be a well known artist and people will be seeking out your pieces! They are beautiful! Good job!

I'm so glad you decided to repair the broken pot. The Japanese art of Kintsugi uses lacquer mixed with gold, silver, or platinum to repair broken ceramic pieces. I've always been in love with those pieces, I think sometimes even more so than the pristine, unbroken pieces. Lots of hard work and lots of learning for you but what a lovely result.

I mean honestly, Linnea, is there anything you cannot do? I love how you find beauty and joy in the process of everything you do. So simple and satisfying to watch.

Back in the 70's there was a gathering of the ceramics departments from several of the local colleges. It was called "The Full Moon Raku", and what an event it was. We met up in the Sand Dunes at Pescadero Beach for a weekend of Raku, Pit firing, etc. I still have a few of the pieces I fired at that event. Those are both beautiful pieces, and the experience is part of the beauty.

I teach sculpture and of the lessons I try to impart over and over is that materials will speak to you and tell you what they will do and what they won’t. So cool seeing you demonstrate that mindset by literally talking to your pots on the wheel! ❤

The clay pots came out beautifully! The coloring and I love the addition of the turquoise and the rope - that you made with your own hands!!! Lessons learned! You won't make that mistake again unless you do it intentionally! Use horse hair on the pot in your firing to add another element. I noticed that the inside of the container had been painted or at least a primer had been painted on. You have come so far!!! Nice to see Noah there to help you!

It is so fun to watch you throw and create beautiful art in the wild. When coning down try pushing the clay down and away from you. It uses the momentum and will cone down beautifully. & ignore me if you are already doing that, it's hard to tell from the angle of the camera lol You can add all sorts of crazy things for variations like dried animal scat. Dog, bird, moose, bear- a great way to add a special touch to your wild clay pieces.

My mom has worked with clay for many years, making large wall murals. We all know when something has cracked because she has always added beads to the cracked pieces. It’s rather a family joke that when so,etching isn’t going as planned, just add beads!! Your two pots are simply amazing. Truly the most beautiful pots I’ve ever seen!!

Your innate sense of adventure and experimentation is truly inspirational. I deeply appreciate you sharing all the steps (and especially the lessons!) of literally everything you do. 💜

Love watching you make pots. I was so into the process when I was in my thirties. I had a creek near my house and I used wild clay for all my dishes and pots. They are still being used 25yrs later. Love your style of throwing. So relaxing to watch...and what a back drop!

I am impressed with how you maintain a single minded focus of your end result image. Even though you are constantly adjusting through out the process. In the end there will be the results, and it will possess it's unique characteristics. They are not flaws, they are features. I was watching an Andy Ward's Ancient Pottery video where he was doing a pit firing. His pots cracked and I think actually exploded. He does a lot of his firing out in the desert around Phoenix, Arizona. He watched his video of the firing and decided that putting his pots on the bear ground around the fire to warm allowed them to absorb just enough moisture to damage his pots. So now he tries to set them on a rock or a pot shard. There is always more clay, I hope you will be able to sell some of your very unique pottery in the future, cheers.

Enjoyed yet another video of yours. Burnishing was done by the Greeks and anything they did, the Roman's would do. They used Terra sigillata for some of theit fine red (Terracotta clay) pottery with glossy surface. If you translate terra sigillata it simply means 'sealed earth'. They would apply as much as three layers of this and burnish it. Terra sigillata is basically the finest of the finest clay slip, and the sealing of the pot by burnishing is actually aligning all the clay particles flat. I'm looking at your wheel and don't notice a well. I was going to suggest wetting your pot as you throw it - wet it with slurry. It stops the pot becoming too wet and becoming weak. You can make your own well from wood and line it with lead or something you prefer. Love the whole concept of what you are doing. Burnishing can be started on the wheel, but as you dont like trimming on the wheel, you probably wouldn't enjoy it. You are a very creative person, working with what you have. A suggestion is that some cracked pots could be sculpted. Vases don't have to hold water. If it doesn't work, you still have clay to be reprocessed. I do prefer slow drying times like yourself, but when it's done commercially, you Also then need a lot of space. Some of your designs are very challenging for the clay to hold its shape- hence they collapse. I think we have all there. You can overcome this by using too much clay a trimming when leather hard, or throw in two pieces. Your office space probably makes most of us jealous in a good way. I like how in a sense, you are bringing back centuries old techniques. Some old potters would take clay from anywhere and they would literally take it from a trackway. Times were tough and potters couldn't afford to buy clay, so they dug holes in the road and stole it. The next day, wagons would be just about wrecked and the coachman would cursed the Potters and their potholes.

I love Kintsugi (or Kintsukuroi) and it made me so happy to see you take this concept into the cracked pots. I have always wanted to do pottery soooo bad. I’ve yet to try it, at 51 yrs old, but I got to try it. Live on the east coast, in Canada. We have massive amounts of natural clay. I just don’t know where to start. Beautiful pieces you created! Love it!
