Glad you made this one Keith. Profiled a canon MG 5420 and a Pro 300 with penny a sheet clearance photo paper using a i1 Studio. Printed a child with a dark background on both. Wish I could hold up to show. Looking at both individually, you would say they were pretty close. Simply amazing that the 5 ink 5420 could be that close to the 10 cartridge pro 300 Side by side you see some loss of detail in the shadow area of the 5420. Thank you for the encouragement, I now have a new tool that works

Thank you so much for this video! I was directed to you by some kind folks in a DPReview thread on this printer. I recently purchased a G620 to replace my broken 11-year-old Epson Artisan 50. During my research I missed out on the information about the relatively poor Mac driver support - both as compared to the Windows driver and with respect to not being able to turn off Color Management in the printer driver on either platform (my old Artisan 50 Mac driver was full-featured). Needless to say, I was greatly disappointed with the G620's driver support and was thinking about returning it in favor of a more expensive Epson ET-8500 series printer (I need a tank-based system) - but as I do own a ColorMunki I might first give some custom profiles a go on the G620 based on this video. (I will of course also watch your videos on the ET-8550 before making a decision). I'm also excited to explore your website further - there's so much to learn!

Very interesting articles. I have tried to reduce color casting for black and white printings without the use of a hardware profiling system. The approach uses the Photoshop curve adjustment layer. First I print the gray scale test ramp found on your site using what I believe are the closest paper settings (I am using a Mac).Then I scan the result, taking care no correction is selected on the scanner software. The result of the scan is loaded in Photoshop and I then use the curve adjustment (or the color picker) to measure the individual RGB values for each gray level patch in the picture. Once this is done, I compare the individual RGB values from the original picture and scanned document and enter a correction value in the curve adjustment layer for every patch (e.g. if green is 35% in the scan and 25% in the original, I will subtract 10% to the value in the curve layer). Once this is done for every gray value in the patch and each RGB layer, I save the adjustment layer and use it for subsequent printings. Of course this is a somewhat lengthy process and it relies on the scanner calibration accuracy (not granted I admit). I would call it the "poor man's profiling". Keith, what do you think of this approach?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Thanks Actually one of my oldest articles on the Northlight site [2004] looks at a similar approach www.northlight-images.co.uk/better-digital-black-and-white-printing-on-your-inkjet-printer/ There are a number of related articles listed in it, with the most recent [2020] being when I decided to revisit the use of a scanner. www.northlight-images.co.uk/fine-tuning-black-and-white-photo-printing/ Here's one [2011] about removing unwanted colour tints on monochrome www.northlight-images.co.uk/printing-greyscale-images-and-removing-unwanted-colour-tints/ All these predate me making videos ...one reason I rarely search RU-vid when first looking for technical info ;-) :-) Perhaps time for me to add a short video to the list of articles! :-)

thanks for the video Keith, does one need to make profiles also for the canon paper (for this printer?) And when a paper supplier gives us the icc profile, is it also specific to certain printers or it can be used on any printer?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Unusually I have to split Mac/PC for this printer. Normally a profile is specific for a printer/ink/paper combination and works Mac or PC. Sometimes if you know a paper is identical (same original manufacturer, different label) then you can use a profile for the other brand, but only for the same printer/ink. For this printer there are a whole load of models that use the same mechanism, so a G550 profile would work with a G650. For this printer, the windows driver is the same as every other printer I've tested for years and lets you use a profile. Canon may include a default profile for some papers with the driver install, but I don't know - they do not provide profiles for many of their papers though. For Mac you are stuck with the dumbed down AirPrint driver, so no normal profiles. BUT my 'profiles' do work and give better prints - they are just not normal profiles of the sort you can use PC or Mac
@paololarocca7684
@paololarocca7684 2 года назад
thanks for clarifying, overall it seem quite a complex process, there must be a way to make all of this simpler, it reminds me the old pc days when even installing a new program wasn't trivial, but of course the market for high quality photo printing isn't that huge I guess (ouside dedicated labs) and I don't know how much effort manufacturers will put in simplifying this.....
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Well, for _every_ other printer I've looked at, profiles are profiles and they just work (Mac or PC). This printer is an unfortunate exception in that Canon decided to use the basic AirPrint setup on the Mac. For its target customers this is really simple to use - just nowhere near the quality the printer is actually capable of. Profile use is pretty simple - it's part of a good quality colour managed workflow, much like calibrating your monitor. Now, there is a big market for which this is to much hassle - they are fine with the dumbed down interface and sub-optimal prints from phones... That however is not really my target audience ;-) :-)

Thank you, so much for putting this together - along with your great article. If I can find one, I want to purchase a Canon G620. Using Mac Catalina, I am concerned about the colour management situation. Using 3rd party paper and other Canon printers with a proper Canon Driver, I have been able to tweek the colours using the "Color Balance" sliders within the driver and then make a preset. Where available, I have also successfully used profiles. I assume that will not be an option with the G620. Do you see any alternative to the color balance sliders with the G620 set-up? Does software like Qimage replace the driver and allow colour correction? Or will I be hooped? I was hoping not to have to purchase a profiling system. Also, just to be clear - Since the Airprint driver is applying its own "Canon Profile" for the selected paper and printer, you are effectively doing double profiling with applying your custom profile in Photoshop. So your profile just serves to "adjust" the Canon profile. So to use the profile, you need to make sure to select the correct print medium through Airprint. I am wondering if "correcting" the colour in Photoshop prior to printing is something to try, as well.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
The simple answer is that proper colour management for the G550/620/650 is broken on Macs. QI does nothing to help this. The profiles I created are indeed 'adjustment profiles' - but do work surprisingly well. There is no 'just' in it ;-) It is a colour managed solution - double profiling is not a problem if it's done correctly, since you are treating the airprint system as a black box to profile. This really is a fairly low-end solution to the problem - simply adjusting sliders is, from a personal POV, not a solution at all - it is unpredictable and far too prone to error Effectively, if you want colour management (on a Mac) then don't buy this printer - the PRO-200 is vastly better (I have a video comparing the two) The choice of the G550 is not a bad one, you just have to make compromises...

@@KeithCooper Thanks so much for your timely reply. I would certainly agree that there is a huge improvement using your profiles and it makes sense. Re. the Pro200, I was hoping to get away from another cartridge based printer and the G620 seemed a good enough way to go especially seeing your results. So we'll see, I may just go for it anyway and perhaps inquire about getting some of your profiles when the time comes. Please keep up the good work!

Great video. I’m currently using: - Canon G620 printer - MacBook Pro 14” M1 - BenQ SW270C monitor - Spider X calibration kit - Canon paper - Adobe Lightroom After I edit my photos and calibrate the monitor, including lowering the brightness to what they recommend. I specify the paper I’m using and start my print. My issue is my colors are not as accurate in my print as they are on the monitor. I’m careful to review them with a 6500K lamp but my reds are dark as well as my grays. Other colors seems okay but I don’t know how else to fix this. I’m not sure if it’s correctable or if I can do anything more. Maybe I should just get a new printer? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

I am just starting to learn about printing and profiles and found your website yesterday - very informative. I hope you don't mind me reaching out to you with a specific question. My hobby is astrophotography and I bought a G550 to do some home printing. The issue I have is prints coming out too dark. I have calibrated my screen with a SpyderX Pro and WIndows is using the profile but whatever I have tried the prints are still darker than the screen. Will a custom profile help or do I need to do something else to brighten the prints?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
Several potential issues: The screen may be calibrated, but to too high a brightness The G550 has rather poor colour management support Printer profiles may help - see the written article for more details 'Something to brighten'? How are you editing your images?

@@KeithCooper I use Pixinsight for editing (specialist software). I set my screen brightness to 118 CD/m2. I received a 100x60cm print of one of my images yesterday (from Optimal Print) and it is stunning - the colours and brightness are an excellent match to my screen. I've produced many printer ICC profiles and I'm often surprised just how well the printers own driver is compared to my custom profiles. That said custom profiles can completely rescue a paper too. I bought a load of A4 HP advanced glossy 250mg when Tesco were practically giving it away in the sale. Straight from the Epson driver ( I had to select Epson's premium glossy paper type as the closest match ) it gave terrible results. Very dark and with a horrible green hue. Once I produced the custom ICC profile however it improved hugely. That's the only occasion where I've seen a night and day difference between just using the driver and producing a custom profile. For the many PermaJet papers I've used to date Ive just used their generic ICC profiles for my Pro 100S. I've found them satisfactory enough that I've not felt compelled to produce a custom profile myself ( plus I'm too lazy lol ). No doubt I'll try their free custom service some day. I'm sure there would be a very slight difference but honestly, the manufacturing consistency of OEM inks and good quality papers make that less likely. Of course I accept that every Pro 100 printer isn't identical in output, it's a mechanical device after all. Maybe one day I'll compare a generic free profile Vs my own custom profile Vs the paper providers free custom profile. Might make for an interesting experiment 😋😁
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Yes - this is something that varies a lot. Whether the difference is noticeable also varies a lot. The PermaJet generic profiles are often likely to be better than custom ones, since they put a lot more resources into making them ;-) The days when inter-unit variation was an important factor are gone. The G550 is an exception for me - Canon's choice of AirPrint is a bad one from my POV, but I'm not the market for a printer like this ;-)

When generating custom profiles I was under the impression that during the process there is a step where one selects " no color management " on an Epson printer or " none " under color matching on a Canon printer. I use a PC. Does a MAC not require this step?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
That's a key point I'm making. Normally it's the same on PC and Mac, but for THIS printer, Canon use the AirPrint driver on Macs, which has not got a 'no colour management' option - hence my Mac 'profiles' not being compatible with windows use (and vice versa). Effectively, Canon's choice of AirPrint driver has broken correct colour management on Macs (which are all I've got here).

Canon have broken colour management on this and related models on the Mac - there is the workaround I mention in the main [written] review: www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-g550-printer-review/ ...but I cannot recommend this or related Canon printers to any Mac user who values good colour accuracy The PRO-200 is very different - full colour management on Mac and Win once again, see the main [written] review www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ Far wider availability of profiles from better media suppliers Cheap card won't work well with any inkjet [Canon or Epson, profiles or not] Think carefully of the business side of things if you plan more than a few cards...

Keith, thank you for your reviews, I'm evaluating to buy a new printer and your articles are a precious source of information. this G550 could be nice as a first step into printing, because I will probably print mainly 13X18 family photos, and some A4 (yes A3 would be nicer), ink is cheap and initial cost is very low. maybe in a year or two I could go with something bigger, or decide to go to a print lab : ) But only AirPrint is really annoying... how this printer is going to perform if I decide to stick with Canon paper only? the lack of color management would still be a problem? I don't have equipment to make profiles and I'm not thinking of buying it, it seems overkill to me for such a printer. the other option is the Epson ET 8550, but initial cost is very different, at that point a P700 is at the same price (but running cost are higher)
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
For Mac users I simply cannot recommend the G550 and it's ilk **IF** colour management is an integral part of your workflow. Canon's forced use of AirPrint is a clear shot in the foot from my POV, but I suspect they know their market and have decided the average G550 user wouldn't know 'off' looking colour if it fell on them... ;-) Canon's job is to sell printers, not necessarily to appeal to the 'photo' market. Now, with the kit I've got, I can make ICC profiles of sorts and get reasonable looking results, BUT I'd not expect many to have access to the profiling kit. The next up is the PRO-200 which is vastly better from a print quality POV - and companies provide profiles. However it's not 'cheap to run'... The 8550 does have ink tanks, so appeals to the 'cost conscious' - profiles are sometimes available. Different markets, different emphasis on costs/functionality... One reason I rarely compare printers... ;-)

Depends on how you are editing images for prints... Do note that there will be very few paper suppliers making profiles available for a printer at this level, especially since they won't work for Mac users. Sure, I've made some good looking prints, but it takes some work - this is a good cheap printer, but that's partly because of how I've got it set up and what's around it (the monitor, colour management, software etc). I'll be addressing this in the review, but a lot is dependent on what you're expecting and the effort you want to make... that and your version of "reasonable results" ;-)

@@KeithCooper I'm using Lightroom to edit my images. I'd have no problem making a big effort to make good looking prints from this printer. It's very economical as regards the ink so that would allow me to experiment a lot with it. Given that I'm an amateur it would be hard for me to justify buying a Pro Epson printer. I look forward to your review. Thanks for your time and the prompt reply.

It's colour management where the effort (with the G500 series) is needed - without profiles you are working blind to some extent - the basic printer driver does not give (what I would regard as) very predictable results. If you use a paper supplier which offers profiles, then it will help. Remember too that for accurate colour you need to consider the calibration of your monitor as well (I've lots of info about colour management here and on the Northlight Images site).

What is best printer in order to have photo prints similar to professional labs? Is g640 one of them?

No it isn't - It's a relatively basic consumer level printer 'Best' simply has no meaning in this context - since "similar to professional labs" has no real meaning. I test on Macs, and the absence of colour management rules out smaller Canon printers

Nice video....but here is a rant not against you of course but against Calibrite. I have an Eye One Pro that I have been using for quite a while, then I changed my computer system from Windows to Mac. I had a furious time trying to find the supposed adapted software and see that in fact once Gretag became Calibrite, they dropped the EyeOne Pro and the soft with it ! Now I am left with a nice instrument which working perfectly but no software to use it.....needless to say I will never buy another product from these people !

The original eye one pro [especially if it's a Gretag macbeth model] can have difficulties with some modern display technologies, however I believe it is still supported by the free DisplayCal software ? displaycal.net

@@KeithCooper Keith, that was great, I could calibrate my screen, but it is only for the display, there is no possibility (or I don't know how to do) to make prints ICC profiles. You may have another good idea 😅

So...i bought this sh---ehm...beautiful printer... (G550)...next I see your beautiful video (GREAT video...thanks!!!)... ...next i realize i need a windows pc... next i realize i put my money on a trash... wow... so, now i need to: open my raw...edit...bla bla bla...export all my work (jpg or tif)...then...reboot...bootcamp...windows...open LR or PS or Capture1...or any other software... load image exported in MacOS into library...then...print from Win... set color from printer (not from software)...select paper (for now i use only Canon paper... Luster , Matte , and Pro.....so icc in driver...) then...print...then...reboot in MacOS and see with monitor calibrated setting and compare... at same time, pray xD ahahahah LoL ... Canon make the joke and the goal... only airprint is the best way to sell PRO printers for us with no money for PRO printers xD ahahhaahahah :-P btw... no money for spectrofotometer...so... print in windows and pray ... xD but...much work... -.-'

Yes - Canon's support for the Mac, with this printer, is less than excellent... Of course, even whilst using Windows, you still need ICC profiles.
