Qipao is a traditional dress which was popular with Chinese women from the 1920s to the 1940s, and Shanghai is the place it all began.
Even today if you ask a Chinese person which one dress best encapsulates the Chinese spirit, the qipao would most likely be the first to come to mind.
Longfeng is one of the most famous shops making the dress, and they have been doing so for more than 80 years…

Shanghainese! It's a dialect of Chinese spoken in Shanghai and the surrounding areas.

It is extra sad when you realise that the traditional tailors are struggling to attract younger generations to carry on the craft due to fast fashion which encourages exploitation and sweatshops. Who would willingly go into the garment industry as a slave labourer? No one. And that’s how we lose all the previous knowledge and skills from this trade, to the point where nobody will be able to sew properly and therefore must accept cheap materials and poor workmanship.
