Question and advice please Ma’am :) I’ve been playing around with making the 4x4x10 hexagon poles and would like to know the depth your husband used when starting his 45 degree cuts. E.g. at the end of the wood in the 4 corners, how deep of a triangle should I be starting with? E.g. how deep did he set his saw blade? I’m not Uber crafty and need to draw lines to visually follow down the wood. Any help you might could give would be much appreciated

I'm glad you like the rustoleum brand :) currently making new jumps at my barn and because I work at rona hardware the barn owner asked me to use my discount to buy the paint. your jumps look great

Thank you so much! I would like to take the credit, but I really think it's the paint! Rustoleum works so great for the jumps, even when they are left outside. You are so lucky to work in a place that sells the paint, AND you get a discount!?!?!?!? That is awesome! Have fun building your jumps!!!!

Hi Lisa! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! Thank you. I'm struggling with choosing the right wood. Our jumps will be 100% out side in the Texas weather. Should I use treated -which holds up better out side but was told I need to leave it out in the elements for a week or two or the paint won't stick; or untreated which doesn't hold up in weather as well but gives me a clean slate to sand, prime, and paint; or cedar which is seems to be ideal but cost more. We are on a budget so cost is a factor but we want them to look nice and last. Thanks so much.

Hi Shannan :) I too struggled with this, choosing the best wood for the job, but also the most cost effective. I have had very good luck with the pine. It is inexpensive, and if prepped, will last a long time. I considered treated lumber, but I didn't want my horses to get exposed to chemicals if they decided to chew on the wood. The treated lumber is also REALLY heavy, which can be a good, or bad thing. I seal the wood with an exterior primer first, and then use exterior high gloss paint (oil based) and this has worked really well. I have left my jumps outside all summer long, and even a winter season and they were ok. I have found that the paint will fade over time, but I can add a coat of paint to refresh the color, and the oil based paint stands up very well to abuse.

Where do you buy your wood for rails? I've been looking but couldn't find any 10' lumber for a good price or at all.

Where do you buy your jump cups in bulk?

To get the least expensive jump cups, I usually will wait until Horse.com has a 30% off sale, and then I buy in bulk. But the absolute best deal I found was a while ago on Amazon. I found the Dapple Equine (best jump cup ever) One Handed Jump cup for $10.00! And I have a Prime membership, so I go the jump cups shipped for free! When I buy them on Horse.Com, they are the basic jump cups and I can usually get them for around $4.00 a pair by buying 6 or more pair.
