Making red Brass or Bronze or Gunmetal. Have you ever seen red brass?

Red brass is a copper-zinc-tin alloy known as gunmetal. This alloy is considered both brass and bronze. I'm going to use 85% - copper, 5% - zinc, 5% - lead and 5% - tin. Red brass is one of the most durable metals for the plumbing industry and commercial water pipe applications. It has a grate resistance to sanitizing. Red brass is also specified for underground service lines since it offers great corrosion resistance to all types of potable waters, and has moderate strength and good retention of spring properties.
In my case, it can be used for casting some statues because of its nice red or rose shade. Because of the low volume of all metals except copper this alloy won't be hard. Anyway, for decorative purposes it's no matter how hard is it.

In Plato's account of Atlantis, is it said the temple of Poseidon flashed with the red tint of orichalcum, which is believed to be red brass. What a stunning metal. Thank you.

Thank you :) Well, I don't know Ancient Greece mythology so deep but I think Poseidon wouldn't mind to get some red brass :)
@NyarlathotepCrawlingChaos
@NyarlathotepCrawlingChaos 6 месяцев назад
There’s a problem with that theory though, as orichalcum was supposedly mined as itself rather than alloyed from something else. It’s also supposed to be super strong and light when soaked in seawater. That said, a red brass coated temple would be epic to behold.
@jaimimcentire99
@jaimimcentire99 5 месяцев назад
@@NyarlathotepCrawlingChaos According to Pliny the Elder, Orichalcum was created from Copper, Tin and Zinc oxide - a copper alloy between Brass and Bronze. Or, as we call it in the US (for some reason) "Red Brass" and in Europe "Gunmetal". It's not a mystery - you can buy surviving Roman orichalcum coins online.

Pedro Scifo Hi buddy. Thanks for commenting. To be honest I'm not a big fan of brass. Zink is burning, its fumes are poisoness and it's hard to see the surface of melted metal. So far aluminum bronze is the best solution for me. Aluminum is everywhere and it's so easy to make this bronze ;)

Thank you buddy! That's really nice to hear that ;) What I can promise is 2 more videos in the nearest time. I have them on my hard drive. I just need to edit them and upload. They should be interesting. The reason why I'm not uploading is because I moved to other country and now just don't have the place where to cast metals. I was going to make several videos on my vacation when I was at home but actually could make only one. I'm not going to finish casting metals and making videos though there will be a pause. May be the long one :) But as I said 2 new videos will be uploaded soon. I hope you'll like them

Very interesting. I am not familiar with this alloy. Very cool video, I like the editing with the two cameras. I'd like to hear some dialogue, personally I talk through my videos really to keep my mind on the task but also if I can say something about the process that helps someone else I'm all for it. Especially if it will help a project of theirs or just to explain why I'm doing something.

Thanks for watching and all good words Chris :) What you say of course makes sense though for me English is not a mother tongue. My native language is Ukrainian. My knowledge of English is not bad but there is an accent and I still make mistakes. There is no problem with everyday communication. I'm living in Canada for the last 2 years and with some practice now it's even easier to talk to someone. I've made one video about 2.5 years ago where I tried to talk but I didn't like how it sound and it was never published :)

@DuralMetalurg
@DuralMetalurg 5 лет назад

Nice clip. How would one extract the metals from each other. Like, the brass, copper and tin. It’s all fused together so how would one separate them? Thanks.
@DuralMetalurg
@DuralMetalurg 4 года назад
As far as I know there is no easy way to do that. People do that with precious metals using chemical reactions. So if you have alloys which contains gold, platinum and so on than it can make sense
@depthbrewedrollers.8793
@depthbrewedrollers.8793 4 года назад
Dural Metalurg Yes makes sense, gold and mercury works but the risk is too high. I asked on these more common and accessible metals just in case you or someone else knew. But hey, all good. Keep on pouring.

Sweet! How do you source your tin? Just poured my first melt of range scrap copper and brass jackets and ingots look a whole lot like yours, any idea how to just get copper out of it? Do I gotta burn off the zinc and lead or what?
@DuralMetalurg
@DuralMetalurg 4 года назад
Well, in my opinion the easiest and safest way is to make kind of screen if you use a steel crucible or use some screen on a long handle if you use graphite crucible. When you reach about 660 C as I remember you should pour lead out of the crucible. A screen should prevent copper from falling out of it. After you get rid of copper you can continue melting copper ;) P.S. I've bought this tin. That's for fun. Tin is not cheap. It's much cheaper to make aluminum bronze instead.
