The comment about the kid eating glue was hilarious. I loved learning how to makes these. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing your talent with others.
Wonderful show! I'm obsessed with POWWOWS and often wonder how they are made. You must have been perfecting your craft for a long time. Also your cute as can be.☺😊😌😳🐺
I have enjoyed all your episode and have been waiting for the bustle making, so thank you very much. It will be very useful this winter as I begin to make my first bustle. Can't wait for episode 4 to complete it.
I'm 14 and I've made 2 traditional bustles my second one actually used the same leather back board as the original and it looks similar to the one you've made today
Hey friend I'm a Colville tribal as time went on we learned how to build bustles from our late father got to watch you string a bustle up like you said some People use yarn , tape , our father showed us how to get things done swiftly he had showed us this stuff called HEAT SHRINK HAS alot of different colors I'm thinking they used it to cover the wiring put over the stem of and Dowell check it out it alot faster
This was on my recommended and I don’t mess with feathers in my state if it’s *not killed* for the just laying there it’s different but I don’t know any eagles in *South Texas* the only on is the Mexico’s eagle.
I have a question, actually a lot lol. But my main question(s) is.. To get a certain shape for the bussel, like the ones u have displayed in the back. Is it just basically sizing up the rods, doing a rough layout, and couple measurements? Also when u were adding the tape to the rod was the sticky side in or out when u inserted it into the feather? Those are my main Q's for now :) Chi-miigwetch for this tutorial! I'm gonna have one happy son!!
Very interesting video! How can I use these tricks to make a smudge feather fan? Do you guys have a tutorial on how to make a smudge feather fan? Thanks!
the base string (blue colored) where exactly is that tied to on the back board? on the other episode covering making back boards it was not mentioned there! please clarify. thank you.
For most. Use what you got. Some use dyed turkey. Some use certain kind from visions. Some can't use some cuz cultural reasons or personal beliefs. For my first I don't want to use eagle cuz I don't feel too confident. So I actually asked around and an elder gave me a catalog from noc bay trading post. Somewhere in the u.p. of Michigan. They have a website to get materials. This reply is four months after the question but hope it helps whom ever sees it and benifits. If I'm in the wrong let me know.
Hi I have this Long Native head dress which was made around a Scottish Army Cap. It seems old but the feathers are sagging and need to be brought back to life a bit. Any tips you can give?. has Thread always been used to keep the feathers together?. Thanks
The only thing about masking tape is it ddy's out... I work in a classroom and that's been my long time experience. How will that affect it in the long term? How long do bushes last?
Is there a way to slice the stem initially and fold it over the dowel rod and then wrap to make an eyelet? I’m curious if that would work for this application or if it would be too flimsy
ATTEMPTING TO MAKE MY SON A BUSTLE AND NEEDING HELP...I HAVE THE FEATHERS LAYED OUT, ITS 21FEATHERS EACH WING. BUT IM AT GROUND ZERO FOLKS...OPIONIONS WOULD BE AWESOME OR TO WALK ME THROUGH IT WILL BE AWESOME
Awake you can use JB weld putty to shape a fan handle. Basically you position the feathers how you want them and put the putty around the quills and shape the handle. Then leather wrap. Sorry I haven't found any videos on it but that's how I do my flat tail fans. The JB weld hardens like concrete. Good luck
Great video. Do you have any recommendations on getting the eagle feathers? We don’t live on a reservation. Our tribe is from California our elders and teachers have passed on unfortunately all was not passed on to take younger generation. I’m trying to pass what I can on to my children and 16 grand children. Thank you for any information you have. We are called 7 feather band of Mission Indian our family are listed in st Buenaventura’s baptism records. I now live in SC
Eagles are federally protected. If your tribe is federally recognized and you are enlisted then you can obtain eagle feathers. ONLY tribes that are recognized and people who are enlisted can possess eagle feathers. Check with your local government and fish and wildlife agencies.
National Eagle Repository has an application process and their own guidelines to request feathers, you'll need a U-Number/Enrollment number from a federally recognized tribe.
oscar godinez No, war bonnets are sacred and are only to be worn by sacred people such as chiefs. It’s not something you can just wear because it looks cool
DARTH SN1PER It is illegal to buy eagle feather or any eagle parts. Also you must be an enrolled member of a tribe with a card from the national eagle repository to legally own eagle parts.
DARTH SN1PER No problem. Yeah, even if you have eagle parts without having the card you can be arrested, fined, and possibly face jail time. are you an enrolled Native?
DARTH SN1PER Yeah, fakes are fine. My son is 14 and a traditional dancer. He's getting his first eagle feathers this year, but has fake ones too because it's really important to learn how to take care of eagle items. Eagles are sacred so letting their feathers or parts drop or break is really bad. Sometimes you could have your feathers taken away for disrespecting them and publicly shamed. So anyway fake is probably best for you. You can get them at Crazy Crow online store.
