Pressurized atmosphere during resin curing is necessary for clarity. Woodturners often use paint sprayer tanks for 60psi, but they're too small. Here's a bigger tank, holding 80psi. All artwork is designed and made by Salem Barker.
Tools used are;
Proxxon Long Neck Angle Grinder
Milwaukee 1/4" Die Grinder
Mastercarver Flexshaft Tool
JET Air Filter System
Kutzall Burrs

Spoke with you at the Barrington art fest. I was the amateur turner in awe of your work. Probably don’t remember me because so many people stopped by to admire your work. Just wanted to say I’ve watched nearly all of your videos and I’m truly jealous of your style and work. Keep em coming! Hope to see more at some other local art shows!

Thanks, Scott! I'll keep'm coming. After you left I thought about a couple pro woodturners I know who are very successful at their trade, doing art shows all over the country... Each of these guys' lathes were purchased for them by their wives who encouraged their pursuit. I noticed you got your lathe the same way. Maybe that's good luck!

man.. i really enjoyed watching this.. really fun. and beautiful work, keep on keeping on! I'm just a young newbie experimenting with paint pressure tanks, 2x4's and alumilite. stuff is addicting, thats for sure!

you know, i started out in this doing resin on canvas art. i found that experimenting using alcohol inks, oil based inks with regular resin and mica powders give REALLY awesome results..wonder how it would look with wood work. i just started using something called "pebeo fantasy" in my resin art. i think it has silicone or something in it but it gives amazing fat cells. i bet you could get really cool effects mixing it up like that (trying to match the woodgrain diameter with the resin cells would be awesome!!) . i think if you're using a pressure tank, that the modifiers wouldn't cause an issue. Also, i started using spaghetti died with food coloring and embedding it in resin. it looks bizarre ha ha. But really, i see a LOT of woodturners making pen blanks and very few doing awesome stuff like this.. you've got Gods hands on your work. Really just stunning and meaningful.

hola buenas noches ,, ¿ que tipo de madera utilizas para las esculturas ??
@corinbw
@corinbw 4 года назад
Amazing work as always. Do you find that the banskia pods jave a lot of voids to fill when carving them?
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 4 года назад
If the banksia pod is cured in a pressure chamber, submerged in resin, it will be solid. I also use them with epoxy, cured in atmosphere, and have to fill numerous voids after the form is sculpted.

Thanks for all the behind the scenes stuff, though a timelapse of the sanding process would have been great. I've been spending the past week doing my first inlay with colored resin, but in aluminum. I cnc'd the design 100 thou deep, pressure cast, and spent today going through the sanding process up to 2500. Going to try buffing tomorrow. Any tips to getting a beautiful finish like yours?
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 6 лет назад
Get a canvas buffing wheel from the hardware store. A small one can be put in a drill. Tripoli buffing compound will polish aluminum, poly-resin, acrylic very nicely. The aluminum will make the tripoli turn black and will smear everywhere, so clean the piece with mineral spirits or something. Automotive buffing products (Turtle Wax, etc.) will make it shine very nicely. When buffing with tripoli, be careful not to press too much heat into the resin.

Fantastic work. Does the pressure work better on the resin than a vacuum chamber??
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 5 лет назад
Thanks for the compliment. In the case of this brand of polyurethane, pressure is better because the open/working time of the curing liquid is too quick for the bubbles to rise. Also, wood is an air sponge and will continue exhuming bubbles even with a slow curing resin like "bar counter" epoxy. I've experimented with both. If vacuum is prefered, the wood surfaces in contact with resin/glue need to be pre-sealed with the resin upon their surface so the don't exhaust during the vacuum cycle when a deeper pour is being performed.

I make guitars, And do a lot of contouring. What Kutzall bit should i try first? Also, You're easily my favorite wood carver. What are the chances one could pay you for lessons some time?
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 6 лет назад
Their Dish Wheels and Shaping Discs are going to do the best large contour shaping/profiling. kutzall.com/collections/sanding-discs. kutzall.com/collections/dish-wheels. The Ball Nose burr would do great in the area where the neck extends from the body. kutzall.com/collections/ball-nose. The grade of grit is relative to your methods. Control the angle grinder with a router speed controller. This is a must. At this point I've never charged for teaching, but I get asked often. Maybe my videos will become such a thing in time.

What kind of finish do you apply to your wood/resin pieces?
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 3 года назад
I only use what has UV inhibitors because light will fade color over time, especially in the dyed resin. The easiest is Hellsman outdoor urethane. It can be wiped on just like Minwax Wipe On Poly, and even easier if thinned 10% with mineral spirits. Nowadays I use Ilva Acrylic Urethane, but it has to be sprayed.

Bit of a dumb question, but these kutzall burrs would work on a dremel brand rotary tool too right? Those things look like they eat wood.
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 5 лет назад
Yes. I was using the 1/8" shaft burrs in my 1990's Dremel for years until i bought a Mastercarver flexshaft unit, which has more torque, and is more useful at lower speeds. For 15 years I've depended on Kutzall tools and still do. For 1/4" shank tools I use a larger die grinder. -but always with a router speed controller.

@@SalemBarker Alright, thank you for the info. I'm looking to start doing some wood work/carving as a hobby and found that a dremel/rotary tools are a very versatile tool people use for various things, and after finding an old one in my basement I'm trying to learn which burs i need to buy as I don't want to buy those huge kits dremel sell without being told what bits I should be using for wood rather than metal if that makes sense.
@SalemBarker
@SalemBarker 5 лет назад
@@ignisking759 the sliver, or medium grit burrs are the most useful. Depending on the wood, they can get clogged with sap/resin but there are ways to clean them. Don't spin at full speed, and cut lightly. They're great. The coupon code SBARKER gives 5% discount. I was mistaken when noting 10%.

what's the pressure in the tank. got me thinkin.
@SalemBarker

The resin manufacturer recommends a minimum of 50 psi. I've been filling it to 80 psi.
