While it might be beneficial to study Italian only in Italian, you can bypass years in the dark, by simply learning the more difficult concepts and principles, explained clearly and methodically in English. This is what I love about Martina’s method. Leave the silly chat-chat to other You-Tubers. She gives you a full semester of next-level information in 15 minutes. Brava!!!

This lesson is an excellent overview of the topic. Thank goodness for beginners like me that it is in English. . The “ immersion” method of learning a language works well with children growing up in a household and a community that speaks that language all the time. Even so it takes them many years to be fluent, yet still making grammatical mistakes and having a limited vocabulary. The army uses this method , 35 hours a week for a year or more immersed in the language to reach fluency. Teaching a language to adults by immersion is like putting a novice into a jet fighter and trying to teach him to fly just by doing it trial and error. The most basic educational practice is to go from the known to the unknown in steps with structure, I.e. an English speaker learning Italian in his native tongue ( English) not in Italian. If you are learning Italian in italian then you must be fluent already to understand instructions.

Excellent way to explain the most difficult chapter of Italian language. Mostly these pronouns are explained individually. It is good, she has explained them at one platform. I am from India and learned this language again after retirement at the age of 60 and complete B2 level from Italian Cultural Centre New Delhi of Italian Embassy in India. God bless you dear. Please continue your efforts.

While I realize that many teachers (to foreigners) of Italian avoid using the student"s native language in explanations, this video clearly demonstrated the benefit of using, e.g., English to explain difficult constructs and concepts, notwithstanding the benefits of using Italian to understand Italian. Thank you Martina

Explaining the Italian concepts in English so that English speakers can now internalize these and effectively use these tips is very beneficial for learners. Hearing language tips from native speakers who are superb teachers like you is much better than how grammar books convey the same ideas. Brava🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

hi there, it is almost 8 months since I started learning Italian. I am from Pakistan my native language is URDU, so naturally English is already a second language for me. Anyways, learning Italian is really a challenge for me as I am already 48 years old but I never stopped learning, I have passed the Level A1 exam and now preparing for A2. Today I come across your video about the direct and indirect pronouns, I really like the way you explain it understanding the issues of English speakers, Bravo. I request you to add more examples and scenarios using the direct/indirect and a combination of both. Again keep up the good work.

This Is A Very Good Video, Even-Though Some Of The Stufff She Says About English Does Nott Sound Righr. She Said In English The Pronouns Go After The Verb @7:50 , I Can't Think Of Any Situation Where That Statement Is True. She Also Said At The Beginin', "The" Has No Meanin', I Know What She Means, But That Is Nott Completely True. "The" Means A Specific Book. If There Was No Specific Book Use "A." But For Beginners Of English She Gave A Good Definition.

Martina thank you for a very useful video. I have now subscribed to your channel and have given you a thumbs up. When talking about pronouns one area that doesn't get much mention, in my opinion, is the formal pronoun Lei. When do you use the subjective Lei, the objective La or the indirect (Le, I think)? In English we do not distinguish between pronouns in the subjective, objective or dative cases so when it comes to the formal Lei students like me seem to hit a black spot when trying to find an answer.

This is probably a stupid question. I felt like I was doing well with Italian until this lol. At the end of the video you said "I gave it to her" in the Italian translation her was "gli". I thought gli was masculine. I would have thought it was I gave it to "him". What would "him" have been in that sentence?
@ItalianBites
@ItalianBites 2 года назад
Not a stupid question at all! The reason for the last "gli" can be explained with the so called "combined pronouns". When you have an indirect (e.g. le = to her) + direct (e.g. lo = it) the feminine is lost due to pronunciation. So the logical outcome for "I give it to her" would be "Le lo do" but because it's combined, the feminine becomes "glielo do". I hope this makes sense, it's difficult to explain it in the comment section, but I highly recommend looking up Italian combined pronouns for a more thorough explanation! 😊

@@ItalianBites thanks so much, everytime I think I am getting it, I realize that I'm not lol. I will definitely look that up. Thanks again🙂

Grazie, Martina per la sua spiegazione sul la parte grammaticale che ho un po’ di difficoltà. Un dubbio: nel minuto 12:30 la spiegazione con la traduzione mi sembra difficile di capire perché tu hai detto pochi minuti prima che il pronome indiretto femminile singulare è “le”, e nel esempio del libro è scritto: “glielo do”. Se la persona a cui si da il libro è femminile, perché usare “gli”? Grazie mille, sono Adriana dal Brasile!

One thing I still don’t understand is specifically when to use gli, for her/him vs. using le/li/lo/la. Am I confusing articles with pronouns? And there is also ne, which I don’t understand how to use.

As I’ve given up learning Italian, it occurred to me that my failings could be traced directly back to too much grammar too early in the learning process, and too little listening/speaking. I suppose that each person has (or had) different reasons for learning Italian, but it seems like listening/speaking to develop confidence should be the first primary objective; and, then introduce grammar (slowly) after basic speaking has provided confidence in moving forward. I’d be interested in your thoughts.

For me it is difficult when there are different pronouns like this: Lo aspetto - I'm waiting FOR him ; etc.
@ItalianBites
@ItalianBites 3 года назад
Ooh I see! Keep in mind though that the problem is in the verb and not the pronoun! Waiting for (in English is a fixed form) = aspettare (no preposition) The ones you have to keep in mind are the ones with "to + noun" which unfortunately are sometimes not directly translatable from English into Italian...
