I enjoyed the “bickering” bit! Thank you guys for the information and being willing to share. I will be retiring soon from 30+ years in Education. I’d love to turn my hobby into projects that will help me fund my hobby! …. And maybe supplement my retirement a little! 😃
I love having the point/counterpoint when working for a craft show vs. fine art. Both of your personalities are definitely a plus. Awesome video! Thanks!
Awesome job, men. You guys are truly inspirational. I've been woodworking for 30 years as a hobby, and after watching you for 2 months, I purchased my first Jet 1221. Thanks!
I'm new to wood turning and have not yet tried to sell anything, but although it is late I am going to try to complete the tree I started yesterday. Ironically (or not) my son is working with me too. I really appreciate your videos, and the playful disagreements in the videos with father & son. I actually began to comment for the sole purpose of thanking _dad_ for his teaching style, explaining what he's doing and vocalizing important points that aren't easily identified through sight alone. His instruction on using lighter pressure on the distances further out from the chuck is such an important detail 👏
I love to hear both sides of the school of thought on the marketability, and the artistic idealism. I struggle with this, I don’t think I have made one item that I could make any money on at this point. Thanks for sharing.
Watching this video was absolutely heart warming and educational at the same time. It reminds me of me and my father working and not working together. Cherish these moments you have with him. The content was great. Being a new turner and all it’s something that looks somewhat simple to learn and I’ll learn tool techniques at the same time. Shawn, you are simply at the top of the game with these videos, thanks so much for putting them out there!
I love seing you and your dad working together. Just goes to show, that people sharing the same passion, can have different views on what is the best approach. Make up your own mind as to what you think is right. :) I agree with your father, and I agree with you - depends on the audience. Some farmers market would not appreciate an art piece, so it would be fine to just thrash out a bunch of cheap trees. A gallery, on the other hand, would be able to sell a quality item at a much higher price point, and they would require a higher attention to detail.
Gotta say I'm with your Dad on this, if it's " worth the effort " then make it the best you can make it, have you guys used Yorkshire grit or Hampshire sheen finishing products, I think you'd like them. My dad too was a turner, I took it up 7 years after he passed, so it's nice to see you guys work together Take care Rob
Now…now…Shawn…listen to your Dad, you guys are great!!!! Regards to your Dad and thank you both for sharing your knowledge on youtube Yiannis (Athens Greece)
@@wortheffort since I am just getting started on my wood lathe I currently follow the KISS rule (keep it simple stupid). :) I will work into the (over)refined products for the true keepsake projects. ;) You have become a treasure find for my lathe learning. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
You two guys are a hoot. A lot of fun to watch you. Thank you for all of the great tips whether it be for the artsy style of individual pieces or the mass production for a craft show, you guys are appreciated for your videos.
I actually had this idea already then this video showed up and I was hell yeah I'll watch it see what you did with them and the back and forth with dad was great made me chuckle
I like the way you guys mess with each other its funny. What state do live in.You mentioned getting mesquite from your yard. I enjoy your channel. Jim's wood shop.
Wow, you two could never deny being father and son! If you just hear the audio it's really difficult to tell your voices apart! Love these trees! BTW enjoyed the craft vs art banter too lol.
Father dear, I think like you, but you sure have some great skills. I need to watch you more.Such a pleasure to see your craftsmanship.Hope to meet you some day.
Those are beautiful trees! Love the tips and techniques for turning these. This is the first time I've seen anyone create a cross on the top. I'll definitely be giving this a try.
Hello resemblance, dang! Good content, thanks for sharing. I turned something very similar a few weeks ago as some turning practice, that went with 2 snowmen with hats, and ended up being a gift for my neighbors :-D
I just found your channel a few months ago. Love your passion and how detailed you (and your dad) get. Any plans for continuing the teaching series? As an intermediate woodworker, I've learned a lot from the ones you've done so far. Great job!
Thanks for your funny, nice, interesting video. By the way I would ask you the following: if you want to turn an epoxy resin wood bowl, what's the maximum % of humidity of the wood in order to avoid cracks or other problems? Thanks and best regards from Slovenia!
I would really appreciate a little technical detail on your Dad's home made tool for creating tenons! I'd like the make one also. Thanks for the great instruction!
@@wortheffort Thanks! That's what I've been doing, but there is just something satisfying about using a tool that you made to make a craft (or piece of art). :)
This is just a piece of 3/8 inch square tool steel rod I got from a tool supplier. Then ground down the end sort of like a skew and made a handle for it. The angle matches the angle on my Oneway dovetail jaws.
They are UV protection sleeves available on Amazon. At my age my skin is very thin and easily scratched and brused. These help but are quite hot in the summer and collect shavings.
Jack Graham Thank you! I was able to find them on Amazon and they’ve been very helpful. Most of the woods cause an allergic reaction on my arms and these have helped.
wortheffort you are one of my myths and I try to listen and apply your suggestions in my works ... I have a small channel too, if you want to take a look, and dream of becoming as good as you !!! happy new year!!!
Sorry for the dumb question, but what tail stock is your dad using? I've seen a bunch of videos where people have a tail stock that looks like a machine screw. 5:40
