“ I was born before health and safety “ that is hilarious. It just goes to show how proper training with experience mentors can have such a positive effect over government bureaucrats making silly rules. I also learned a really cool trick working with modern materials from this experienced craftsman. Rock on Cliff.
Those “silly rules” are a response to worker injuries and employers not providing safety equipment and safe working conditions. Nothing frivolous about it. Cut down on deaths and grievous bodily harm that was all too common in the 19th and early 20th century. I get it though. Both of you are just poking fun at rules. Guys don’t like directions either lol.
You do realize that much of his cohort are dead, missing limbs, or suffering from diseases because of a casual disregard for safety by themselves & governments of the past, right?
Thank you for sharing your approach to a problem that I didn’t know I had, with a solution that I didn’t know I needed. Absolutely brilliant. What a shame that the old ways of problem solving are being met with disrespectful snide remarks, instead of being valued. The ability to think outside of the box is a priceless dying art, in and of itself. Peace to you and your household.
You, sir, are amazing. I also saw your update video and you're correct -- the nosings are ridiculously expensive -- this method is the definition of ingenuity. Thank you so much from across the pond!
Brilliant. Why didn't I think of that? I've been a builder for 35 years. I've used a torch to heat pvc piping to make soft bends while doing underground work, acrylic sheets to bend for custom aquariums, and all manor of such. Never dawned on me to heat and bend vinyl plank for stair nosing. This is fantastic! And nothing beats a proper jig.
It amazes me how brilliant and practical people like you are. You make things look so easy, which regard some extreme skill. What are brilliant way to do this task, thank you.
Great idea and excellent procedure ....As a finish carpenter myself, I keep asking myself...... WHY didn't I think of this ??? LoL Thanks for sharing !!
What a great video. Cliff is that neighbor everyone wants. Knowledgeable, and doesn’t need, nor has the time and patience, for no stinking governmental “health & safety” bullsh*t. Cliff’s my new hero. Thanks for posting, brother. I’m pulling my hair out trying to find a solution (that looks good) for my stairs, as well. Very well done, mate. 👍
Thanks Cliff. I have been hunting for months on how to take my vinyl plank flooring down the stairs in a uncomplicated way. This video has given me the answer. Thank you so much. I'm making a jig tomorrow to begin. Your are a genius!!!!
I did staircase from seeing his Video but used Smartcore vinyl flooring from Lowes it was three times the thickness so i cut the 4" of backing off to make it thinner to heat and ben for the bullnoses! Turned out perfect! THANKS!
This technique looks way easier than another video that used a router to thin the plank and bend in place onto the actual nosing. Thanks for keeping it simple Cliff.
That's superb Cliff, what an improvement. That jig you designed is a brilliant time saver and saves measuring as well, it's fool proof. Enjoyed the video. Tony
Hi Cliff Thanks for the video I have been trying to do that to our stairs for the fast 2 / 3 years but never could get anything to match the floor or if I could it was seriously over priced .This is that job sorted thanks again
This bloody genius!! I have been hesitant to put down vinyl plank because all the options for the stairs was a piece of vinyl that was proud of the surface and made walking on it weird! This will work perfectly! Thank you sir!!
This is a great idea for sure, but at least with the nosing it does make it a bit safer when walking in your socks, this will be a much slippery method.
Thank you so much for this content Cliff. You sir are a genius and have saved me a ton of money. I can complete my project now knowing that the stair noses will match my flooring thanks to you (it’s been unfinished for two years).
I saw this video and did this on my rental property stairs(13) that previously were carpeted. Stairs had 2X12 boards for tread so I just bent my pre cut 48>42” length vinyl planks around a 2X4 (same thickness) and held it with a few drywall screws 3/4 thru width of a 1X3 as the overhang of the tread nose was 3/4”, then laid 2 30lb boxes of flooring on it till cold. Worked out good, snug fit on 2X12. Used construction adhesive. I don’t think renters can tear it up if they try, well, maybe.😜 Thanks for the video, Chuck from Orlando, FL USA.
A simple and elegant solution to a common problem. I have seen countless ugly attempts at finishing treads with vinyl flooring but never this. Well done sir and thanks!
Very nice use of post forming. Laminate countertops are made in a similar fashion. Nice use of jigs and a cool application to make the stairs look great.
Hello from Wyoming! You are an incredibly clever man. Ive been really struggling to figure out how to do my stairs noses ( Im totally new to DIY ) and you've solved my dilemma! MANY THANKS!!
I wish I had this knowledge when I did my stairs. Brilliant, I am thinking about ripping out the stairs and redoing them. I love the knowledge and experience available on RU-vid.
I am very impressed with your ingenuity. I wish I could have done this using vinyl planks that I liked. Instead, I settled for some pre-made laminate stair treads. You did a great job on your project!
This is beautiful... I've replaced carpet with hardwood and had to remove the carpet nosing to do so (which does take some time). Wrapping the carpet nosing with the vinyl plank is brilliant.
Fantastic tips, thanks for sharing. I can honestly say I have never seen anyone wear a warehouse/storeman's coat outside of a warehouse or storeroom or a Two Ronnies Sketch
what a bloody clever bugger !! fantastic clear and concise video. I reckon i could do that now you are such a good teacher. thank you very much for making the video.
I have just come across your video. I have to say thank you.. I have been looking for a way to transion vinyl flooring to the start of my top step. All I kept finding, was that I had to cut the bullnose off. I have no intension of doing that. Transion strips either cost an arm and a leg cause they have a slight curve or look like they belong in a factory. I was begining to think that my "bargain" flooring was a waste of hard earned. Well not any more. I will be doing this when the weather gets a bit better and its all down to you. As long as my hubby can keep the tea coming. Your a star. Thanks Cliff mate x
Such a gorgeous book - each shed is unique and inspiring, and I love all the tiny details Kotite features to help readers imagine how to create their own She Sheds ru-vid.comUgkxe9yi0sulKgsp0VJJCIrLWWkvVqcU7LFR . The feature on Dinah's Rustic Retreat is like something from a fairy tale. It's really inspiring to see how creative all these ordinary people are in making beautiful and useful spaces on a modest scale.
I was hoping to remove carpet and have vinyl plank flooring installed. I have a step down into a sunken great room plus stairs to my basement. I was dreading the extra expense for the steps. This technique could enable me to accomplish my goal this year. (71yr old on a fixed income.) Thank you, Cliff!!!!
Thanks for such great information. I have such a problem finding the right stair nose width for my stars. Now, I only need to use the planks I already have to make them. Great!
Great idea Cliff ~ we wanted to use LVP 5 years ago, but they did not have the matching bull nosing. Had I known this trick we certainly would have installed it over the engineered wood.
Great idea. Thanks for the video. I'll be doing the top of my stairs (put vinyl plank flooring in the whole upstairs).Greetings from Port Colborne, Ontario, Canada.
Ha! You remind me of Dr. Nefario... in a good way! Great idea, I don't do a lot of flooring because of bad knees but if I come across the need now I know how to get it done, from across the pond Cheers mate!
Well done sir. Fantastic job on all of it. I’m in your debt as are any who do this. The cost of store bought stair tread is ridiculous, this will save a lot of money.
