According to Matt Lukin, Buzz "broke up" the Melvins before moving to the bay area, effectively leaving Matt behind. Given that Mudhoney might not exist otherwise, Matt seemed pretty ok with it but liked to poke fun at Buzz for it. Glad to hear that Lori is doing well

We took my 11 year old daughter to see "stop making sense" for the re-release last year. My wife and I were sitting there, boogie-ing around in our seats, but our child was just sitting there dead still, and we were thinking "Oh god. she hates it. We have wasted 2 hours of her life"... after we walked out I gently asked her "so... what did you think?" and she said "that was possibly the best movie I have ever seen in my life". We have since gone back to watch it at IMAX, and it has been on strong rotation at home. Yet another young musician inspired by Tina Weymouth. Another great video. I will have to fire up Ozma for the child to listen to after school today. I think her favourite Melvins album is Lysol or Houdini.

Great album. I’ve got the CD with Gluey Porch Treatments tacked on as bonus tracks. I know a few of Ozma’s songs (Creepy Smell, Vile, etcetera) were being played live before they recorded GPT in ‘87. Is there any reason these songs weren’t recorded for the debut LP, Mark? Which song on Ozma is your favorite? I’ve always loved Koollegged, Creepy Smell, Raise A Paw and Dead Dressed. Thank you again for sharing these stories, these videos are fascinating to me. Also, I hope you’re able to get Lori to agree to an interview. I’d be very interested to hear her thoughts as well.

I agree the unique sound of the drums are a huge part of this record's greatness. Also the part about the SVT being used makes sense. I much prefer the Ampeg over the (Fender ish) Mesa bass sound and I can definitely hear the Ampeg "clang" (especially when a pick is used) on this record.

It's STILL weird ! I almost feel like I was trying to get the drums to sound like an 80's drum machine...I remember really liking the artificiality of the Bowie Let's Dance LP, even though I think that is real drums...nothing sounds like Ozma and that is part of the beauty of it regardless of the nuts and bolts...

Ozma is still probably my favorite Melvins album, and an absolute classic. I don't think you've emphasized how convoluted Ozma's (and Gluey's) songs are; these strange sluggish punk tunes with left-field turns, dissonant chords, unusual time signatures - maybe the closest that the Melvins came to jazz rock, but still in the format of brief 1-2 minute songs. Just these little enigmatic blobs of disjointed riffs that came out of nowhere. Do you have an idea of how this impetus came to be, for the Melvins to start writing more abstract and technically demanding music like that?
@MarkDeutrom
@MarkDeutrom Месяц назад
You should be a music critic ! I wasn't doing a breakdown of the record but more an oral history of it's background and creation. Ozma is simply what the listener wants it to be. It sounds like a bunch of little experiments to me....

Ozma was the first compact disc I ever purchased. With Gluey Porch Treatments on the disc also. I didn’t even have a cd player yet but couldn’t find any Melvins on cassette at the time. Had to have my buddies girlfriend copy it onto a tape for me. I had heard a tiny bit of Melvins through a dude I worked with, and wanted to hear more of this band that sounded so different than anything else I had heard. Was hooked from the opening riff of Vile and the Melvins became one of my absolute favorites for several years. I love the way Ozma sounds. It has a hissing, snarling sort of sound. Still my favorite Melvins album. Great job producing it Mark and I’ve really enjoyed watching your videos and gaining insight on those early days. Thanks.

Hi Mark great video, loving all the Melvins content you've been doing. My apologies if you've gotten this suggestion many times already, but I think something that is sorely missing from the Melvins "lore" is your side of the story of how you were kicked out of the band. I just rewatched the Melvins documentary section regarding your period with the band and Dale and Buzz breeze by the circumstances of kicking you out, and due to your reasonable choice to not be involved in the documentary we don't know the full story. Completely understand if it's simply not what you want to discuss, but given the in depth nature of your Melvins content I suspect you could make an interesting video on the topic. Hope all is well.
@MarkDeutrom
@MarkDeutrom 3 месяца назад
There's a complexity to all of this that isn't particularly well served by a couple of minutes talking to a camera...just like a lot of things. The fact that this wasn't really discussed in the doc illustrates that, and I appreciate and respect their inclination to skip that. I haven't watched it, so my impressions are all second hand from people such as yourself. My lack of participation in the doc was a completely separate matter that was discussed in person with the film maker before the whole thing started up. I remain unconvinced any of this is still interesting, or requires airing, but certainly fans will remain fans and stay interested in any "new" revelations.... At this point it's virtually archeological, and of little consequence. Thanks for spending your time here.

I would say, for the understood sound of sludge metal - it's definitely Lori. There were others, though I'd be stretching the term - Sean Yseault's work on those noise rock White Zombie albums, particularly Soul Crusher, is pretty heavy and sludgy. Mick from Kousokuya is another - her playing on DEATH TRIP NIGHT, from 1982, is heavy and doomy, though 1. Who knew these guys in '82, barely anyone knows them now and 2. As heavy and doomy as they get, it's a lot closer to no wave than sludge metal. Still, if anyone didn't know these, you should check them out, because they are *really good*. Love this video, subbed to the channel. Saw you with Melvins a few times bitd - I loved your characters (the Mod being my fave). Had an "interaction" that wasn't great, but I chalk it up to the time - which wasn't great. This video is beyond informative and gets into real biographical detail which I find very compelling and, honestly, can't wait to watch more! Pardon the ramble!
@MarkDeutrom
@MarkDeutrom 3 месяца назад
Thanks for the suggestions. I will use the interwebs to investigate. RE interaction : it's pure luck if you have a "good one" ....people forget that what is a recreational situation for them is a working situation for someone else. @@MarkDeutromWhite Zombie: in their early days, they were a kinda Pussy Galore/Birthday Party/Black Sabbath/Blue Cheer hybrid who were pretty amazing. Bassist Sean wrote all that material out in tablature, which, for a noise rock band, is both impressive and baffling! Not at all the band that Beavis and Butthead broke "Interaction" Yeah, I totally get that - and it was a particularly bad night; Portland, Maine IIRC it was the day after Cobain died? The show was a rough one, all around just nervous energy. Were I older, I would have kept my distance - but I was a kid and you guys were my favorite band, so I just didn't have that sense. Hey Mark. I was wondering. When was your first live show with the Melvins and where ? thanks

I'm thinking it was at the Whiskey in Los Angeles in 1993 before the tour with Primus. I seem to remember Monster Magnet headlining but I'm not sure. Did a few tours before that as sound engineer also.

Not sure if d_walsh meant 1st Melvins show ever but I know you played in early 92, opening for Bad Religion, probably just filling in at that point

Very interesting to get to hear all this back story stuff. I don t know Ozma very well, but I remember that all the german music journalists raved about it as THE Melvins Record. I probably most surely won t agree with that, but I ll give it another spin. Cheers!

I always looked forward to interviews with The Germans since they asked interesting and thoughtful questions. They also had a tendency to impart great importance to relatively insignificant things... I'm painting with a broad brush here, but it might be interesting to see if they still think Ozma is THE Melvins record !

@@MarkDeutrom Well. I only dabbled in Music Journalism, but if I had to answer the question, it would be Houdini, Stoner Witch or Stag and I m not writing this cause I m corresponding with you. Yes. The Germans. Very perculiar, and I can tell cause I m one. Lots of holy cows, and sometimes very insignificant Strong Ideas. I agree. The German music magazine scene doesn t really exist anymore like it did in the Nineties. Of course there s still Rolling Stone and Musik Express, but thru out the 80ies and 90ie and into the 2000es there was a magazine called Spex, which was pretty important if you were into Underground Music, but not only confined to that. That s where I got most of my information starting in the early nineties. They were really good for a while, and turned me on to a lot of great bands like Swell, Palace Brothers, and they were great champions of the Melvins. Maybe you remember being interviewed by them. But the Melvins also had a big Word of Mouth rapport back when and where I grew up. If you knew Music Nerds in Munich in the Nineties, the Melvins were big, along with Ministry, Dinsosaur Jr. It stretched out of course, depending on who you were talking to or hanging out with. I had a great musical acclamation phase there, knowing people who were really into Reggae/Dub, Electronic Music specialists. And stuff I kinda was on my own with like being the greatest Genesis Fan in the World and still am😅

@@MarkDeutrom Concerning your question, if OZMA is still THE Melvins record, I couldn t really tell you, cause I m not reading German Music Press anymore. But my guess is that it is not that big of a relevant question anymore, but I might be wrong. I m kinda hanging out here with the Internet Nerds, or reading books about music occasionally (I just read one about Fugazis "In on the Killtaker" which was really good. It is part of a series called "33/1/3" with books always concentrating on one record. Published by the Book Company "Bloomsbury")
