The results of an older video of mine called "Don't tell my wife how I did this!" yielded some very nice Pecan wood. I had some scraps left over from the sawmill pecan flooring project, so I decided to utilize the leftovers for some rolling pins. I laminated three pieces of wood together for the main rolling pin, and then I used some Brazilian cherry scraps I had for the handles. I finished it off with boiled linseed oil. I think I will have a happy customer (my wife, that is!) Wood turning is so much fun, when I get a chance to do it!

Linseed oil is not food safe. Better to use Walnut Oil on the main roller. Anything you want on the handles.

It is food safe as long as it is 100% linseed oil. It is though usually not used on rolling pins as it will give a weird taste to whatever you are rolling. It totally agree with you that walnut oil is the best option but you can use anything that is food safe and does not have a significant taste.

Just how much Linseed oil do you think the person would consume? Idiot. You'd have to eat ten of them to make a difference, then, you'd have more problems than the linseed oil. Nuts like you give wood working a bad name. Linseed oil is just fine.

This is correct - pure linseed oil is food safe but boiled linseed oil has toxic metallic drying agents added.

You could to this from one piece of wood.. no need for holes and all..

I'm curious as to why you didn't create the full length rod hole during glueup? Even if it was a square hole, placement of the bearings would produce round ends? Thanks for showing.

Method is the key to madness, and 95% of disagreements in the shop are the result of it. HA! This is my personal style, and it yields the possibility of more interesting designs, without having to have a glue seam down the middle of the pin. It showcases more precision and skill, IMHO. I've done both ways, I think this is better, that's all there is to it. Thanks!

very nice !!!! I guess it's me but I like the traditional round end handle. ??? but your design works as well. it came out beautiful!!!!! Linseed oil is a safe treatment for food application ?????? way cool I always thought it was not.

I would not drink a bottle of Linseed oil (or olive oil for that matter), nor would I eat wood, but both are fine for food contact. I've known some old timers who would use any oil they had on hand, vegetable/ olive/ tung/ linseed, etc. etc. The main idea is to beautify the wood and offer some moisture displacement should the wood try to dry out, or if it ever come in contact with more water-based sources. Thanks!

I heard, don't know if true, that chefs want solid ends that do not turn. Something about more control with rolling out dough. Also have seen rolling pins with no handle ends.

Where do you get the rod and the nylon bushings
@ernestthebo5441
@ernestthebo5441 5 лет назад
Sources I found Amazon: 100 Nylon Spacer Bushings .257 I.D. 1/2 O.D. Length 3/4 Ebay: Value Collection 1/4 Inch Diameter, 304 Stainless Steel Round Rod 6 Ft. Long I chose stainless steel, for the greater strength and higher modulus. You could quibble about the possibility of crevice corrosion of the SS as it passes through the nylon roller, but I think it will be minimal. Personally, I very seldom wash my rolling pin, I just wipe it off with a clean paper towel. On the rare occasion that I wash it, I don't immerse it. Also, I would be very careful of using boiled linseed oil. 100% Pure boiled linseed oil is OK, but many boiled linseed oil products contain additional chemicals and plasticizers that may not be food safe. If in doubt, check the MSDA of the exact product you want to use.

A very nice rolling pin,but I can't understand why you didn’t cut your original pieces on the table saw with the blade set at 45% to take a lot of wood off before Milling?leaving you with a exogen piece.

Colin Askey A piece this size represents no danger of hanging like a bowl would. It would actually take more time to do as you are suggesting. If you've ever seen the high production spindle turners, they never 45 a piece. That's my reasoning anyhow. Thanks!

Boiled Linseed Oil is not food safe. It contains metallic driers.

Respectfully, sir, you're incorrect. The drying agents you are referring to are not in any amount considered toxic or dangerous. It has been used in the industry for decades and has been proven safe. www.woodworkersjournal.com/boiled-linseed-oil-toxic/

@@southernindianasawmill1367 "...making it perfectly safe for use on furniture" no where in that article they recommended using it for food-contact items.
