I think that there are 8 players in NBA history that you can make the argument for as the Greatest of All Time. Magic Johnson is one of them. In this video, I make the case.

9:00 a tremendous point that is more than overlooked. The 80's NBA was literally a combination of the best of 2 leagues, the combined NBA/ABA. It wasn't like the post-expansion 90's where the NBA stretched it's talent thin in order to populate expansion team rosters. The 80's NBA was like an All-Star Dream Team made up of the best of the the NBA and ABA.

Love these but I don’t see how Kobe can’t be in one of these videos. Man was robbed of two mvps, led one of the worst teams to the playoffs multiple years, had 81 points. Anytime someone shoots something in the trash can, hamper anything who’s the name do you hear? Only reason he isn’t considered higher one the list was the years he didn’t have Shaq or Pau. Look at the all nba and all defense teams he won. Man is very underrated.

@amberbastianelli6025
@amberbastianelli6025 4 года назад
@@thegreathutt why do NBA arguments always come down to wild over exaggerations like this? Kobe is not the goat, but the vast majority of people put him top 10. Kobe not being top 10 would be like Kareem or LeBron not being top 5. For the most part, there seems to be a general consensus on who 9 or the 10 best players in NBA history are: Jordan, LeBron, Kareem, Russell, Wilt, Magic, Bird, Duncan, and Kobe. The majority of people have these 9 guys in their top 10 in some order. You can debate the order all day, but you'd be hard pressed to find more than 1 or 2 players that have a case over any one of them. The closest outside of them are the likes of Shaq, Oscar, Hakeem, West, Curry, Durant, Erving, Moses, and Dirk. I don't think there's any really strong case for any of them to be over any of the 9 guys I just listed, but even so, to pretend any one of those 9 isn't even *close* to the top 10 is a massive stretch. Curry and Durant will likely have cases in a year or two, but other than that, nobody really does.

Even the players in the league put him number one. I’m a die hard fan but I mean man come on, the man was a pure assassin and killer on both ends of the floor. I put him on my top 5 any day of the week because when you need a bucket, someone shut down or anything else he was the man to go to. I’ll chime in here. Magic Johnson is the most game changing revolutionary player in the history of basketball 🏀. I’ve had the chance to play against him in 2 games in LA. He reminded me of a superb baseball pitcher. He’s playing chess while the others are playing checkers. He’s the only player I could watch play and then step out on the court and be better, much better. I owe no player as much gratitude and appreciation as I do Magic. As Bird stated “ simply unbelievable”He is and always will be the greatest basketball player Bird and myself ever saw. Much love to Magic.

If you grew up in the '80s, you feel like Magic is the GOAT. If you grew up in the '90s, you feel like Jordan is the GOAT. If you are growing up now, you feel like Lebron is the GOAT. I think you have to look at how impressionable you are as a child. When you see greatness for the first time in real time, its hard to shake that image. Numbers are the only thing you can look out, and which numbers you think are most important can vary wildly from person to person. Its not that basketball was better when you were a kid, its that life was better when you were a kid, and everything that happened at that time feels grander than it does when you are an adult, and the magic (no pun intended) starts to disappear from your reality.
@kevin8006
@kevin8006 4 года назад
Of course, the GOAT debate is after all subjective even though there are persistent fans out there claiming that it’s ‘objective’ in their favor of course ( I’m talking to you diehard MJ and LBJ fans ). It all comes down to which player impressed you the most when you were the most interested. And longetivity is important hence why they all have strong cases. Its exactly as you say it is. If you grew up watching the 80’s its Magic, 90’s it’s MJ and nowadays it’s Lebron. Every single sport has this. Tennis has the Federer - Nadal - Djokovic debate. People from 00’s believe that either Federer or Nadal deserves it, people now believe that Djokovic is the best. In the end it all comes down to the time period in which they’ve played and personal preferences. So just like tennis there’s no definitive objective answer.

Kevin no anyone that looks at the stats will clearly see that it’s Jordan.
@kevin8006
@kevin8006 4 года назад
RAW asshitshow if you look at stats then players like Wilt, Russel and Kareem have stronger cases than MJ. There is no objective answer as all people have different opinions of the ‘goat’ one might look at rings, others might look at stats and there are some who look at dominance. Lebron also has better stats than MJ since his efficiency rating is the highest ever I believe. Just looking at PPG etc does not make a player the goat imo. But you might believe otherwise. Wilt should then be awarded the goat award since he averaged 50ppg for a season at one point

If Worthy doesn’t get hurt, Magic ends up with 6 rings and the the whole MJ GOAT argument goes out the window. Magic was 90% prime when he was forced to retire. In some ways he was actually better at this point in his career like his shooting. I don’t want to take anything away from MJ, but damn it. I would have loved to see a rematch the next year with a healthy Worthy and Magic. The Magic/ Jordan rivalry would have would rival the Magic/ Bird… Damn those wood have been some great games. Losing Big Game James Worthy would be like MJ losing Pippen. Worthy was that good. Magic had 4 or 5 quality years ahead of him, and I guarantee you he would have won at least one more championship. I put his 12 years up against anyone else’s. What a great ride it was! I’m so glad he’s still around and healthy. It’s hard to believe we are 30 years since his last season and that horrible heartbreaking day when he announced his retirement. Seeing him in the All Star Game and on the Dream Team was so go to see.

I mean, yes, you've made the point that Magic was a phenomenal basketball player, truly one of the greatest ever. But the previous ones I've watched, I was convinced. Even after watching this, I'm not fully convinced that I would rank Magic Johnson as the GOAT above the previous three. Maybe if he had played longer than 12 years. But there can only be one GOAT, and in order to truly be the greatest, I think you have to have extraordinary longevity as well as an unbelievable prime. Another thing rarely pointed out. His last couple of pre HIV diagnosis season he had increased his free throw efficiency to over 90%. The one thing he was only somewhat average at as a point guard, he was now becoming one of the best of all time.

This "Making the Case" video is a masterpiece. The ending is so perfect. This one is clearly the best of the series. You almost swayed me to make Magic my GOAT choice...but sorry, MJ still reigns in that spot (for me). But I could see Magic and Bird co-located in the 1.5 spot. It's just too close to call given the amazing accomplishments to have 5 and 3 NBA championships for Magic and Bird respectively and in what is very clearly the most talent-laden era in all of the years basketball has been a sport. These two brilliant pros (Magic & Bird) very literally saved the NBA. That is not hyperbole; it is a hard fact. For this fact alone, one might give them GOAT status co-equally in the top spot and then make MJ 1.5.

If Jason Kidd had Magic Johnson's height and caliber of teammates during his Nets tenure, you would have seen Magic 2.0 Magic took what Pistol Pete had that was WAY TOO AHEAD of his own time, and put a little more magic dust on that basketball.

Fun Fact: 6'10 is the average height of those in the Goat series. Kareem is the tallest 7'2 Jordan is the shortest 6'6 In the world, there are only 128,000 taller than that. Thus height is the most important factor in excelling in basketball.

Serious question: Now that LeBron has officially passed Magic on the All Time Assists board, does Magic still hold the "greatest passer" title? Personally I think yes (Magic's shorter career length makes those assist numbers insane), but curious if anyone else has an opinion.
@rest4rt000
@rest4rt000 Год назад
Yes he is still the greatest passer. The numbers he was putting up in that short of a time span while passing the ball like a magician can’t be overlooked. Hypotheticals aren’t a great argument but if he played at least 3 years longer we would be having many different conversations concerning magic
@nbassasin8092
@nbassasin8092 Год назад
Bron had the skills and talent to pass him, but opted for a more slasher style of play throughout most of his career. He could have been greatest passer but isnt its not just about the sheer number of passes, guy has played long enough to accumulate those even with lower averages. its also about the IQ levels of those passes. Again, Lebron had the potential, he just opted to develope and focus on other areas more
@innosanto
@innosanto Год назад
Lebron is not top 10. And playing 30 years in an easy league amassing numbers dont mean much. That one assist here and there, that one critical move in thise parts of games makes the difference. This js why intangibles say the truth and not statistics
@nbassasin8092
@nbassasin8092 Год назад
@@innosanto not top 10 best passers or just not top 10 greatest players? Because one is a hot take that has some merit to it, although mixed with a bit of hate and the other is just a dumbass statement so Im making sure?
