Justin Williams is an intriguing figure in the world of road cycling. Having been a pro rider for a number of years he's recently shaken things up by starting his own team. With two national criterium titles to his name and a number of other victories the Legion, or L39ION, of LA has gained huge notoriety in the USA and the globe. Whilst Jeremy was in LA Justin showed him around and helped him to dig a bit deeper into the coolest team in cycling.

This is probably THE BEST video GCN has put out since the original 3 presenters were working together. Justin and his brothers show what cycling is all about. Cycling is about bringing up those behind you, supporting those who love the sport, it’s about making changes to traditions while respecting where those traditions were born, but most of all it’s about family and bring all those interested in being a part of our cycling community into the fold. When I see J Pow I’m always keen, but I like the way he minimised his presence and let the people tell their own story. I’m not American but I do find it refreshing to see these vids on American cycling culture. It looks much more fun than the European one, I guess as the stakes are lower. Anyway, Jeremy - keep exploring, keep documenting. This stuff is gold.

@@punkandprovocation Give us all a break. They had Emma Pooley but she left to pursue other goals. As you can (maybe?) tell, they don't just hire any jerkoff who likes cycling and they can't force people to work for them. There are loads of men out there with World Tour experience but very few women. As far as minorities go, you can't just change the history of cycling, right now, it's pretty European. I mean FFS, anyone with the resume GCN wants is like guaranteed to be European; and at the end of the day this person has to want to work for GCN and has to speak one or more of the languages in which GCN operates channels.

USA Cycling, and most cycling promoters across all venues, needs to take a hard look at itself and its identity, and then look at the work that Justin is doing. He has success because of inclusiveness and the drive to find riders from outside the usual paths. Well done L39ION!

Cycling is open to anyone who can afford the bikes and going to races. Its all about interest, passion, support, etc. The West Coast needs more events in areas where spectators can come across a race and watch it. However, only a few races or publicized to general public. Most people do not know about them. Many races are not even filmed professionally.
@CycoWarriorx
@CycoWarriorx 4 года назад
Mark Connelly While I agree cycling needs more support and better promotion, particularly in the sport competitive west coast, I think what Steve was touching on is while its open to anyone who can afford the bikes and race, it’s not always welcoming of "anyone"... I don’t know if that makes sense or not, but that’s a general consensus... good points nonetheless Mark.

Gotta say a big thank you both to Jeremy and GCN for making this film. Really never heard of the L39ion racing team or the Williams brothers but it was really fascinating to hear a bit of Justin's story and what it was like for him trying to make his mark on cycling. I guess that since cycling is quite a Euro centric sport that its always very alien for riders in the USA to make it big here and reach either World Tour or Pro Conti level. It would be really interesting to see more films like this which expose the development and domestic side of racing in the USA and try to shed some light on what the process is like for riders from non traditional cycling nations. Really great to see that Justin is actively using riders from a wider ethnic background to include them in the team and help to make the sport of cycling really appeal people from all differnt backgrounds who wouldn't usually be exposed to the sport. Really well done and a would be cool to follow up onn the story again in the future!

I met Justin at an event for Specialized Dealers last September. He sat at our dinner table one night and graciously answered questions from my curious industry peers. Eventually he told us the story of how he got into cycling with his father, and eventually how he became involved with racing. He is one heck of a nice guy, and a fierce competitor. He’s also right about pro cycling’s antiquated sponsorship and employment systems. The Williams brothers have taken 100% control of their professional careers. Personal sponsorships with companies that will get your back when you are in need of help, and teams that are more like co-ops or really families is what the future needs to be in order to ensure the survival of our sport here in the US, and to ensure the growth worldwide. Legion should be the model for Professional cycling teams from here forward.

I love that, “lets make it cool” I’ve always loved cycling and rode now and then but not as often as I should. This year for the last 3 months in a row I have been consistent and passionate about riding that many of my friends have been motivated and followed along.

What makes this video even better isn’t the insight into Justin and Corey and their cycling team ripping up Crit races, it’s the fact that both, given their successes, are some of the coolest guys in cycling... that’s the beauty of this... he is who you see and in the end, in cycling, we can appreciate the realism in people like him, because that shouldn’t be rare - it should be the norm... Great job GCN!

This was a really good presentation and streets away from the typical UK content. It’s not about the kit or science, cycling is a state of mind to most and your biggest competitor is your own mind. I like it when cyclists lay out the things that drives them

That was a great watch. Justin's results were already incredibly impressive, and I'm all for more style and swagger in our sport, but his commitment to his mission (to grow the sport so people like him can reach their potential) is next level. These guys, and a few of the women's teams, make me excited about the domestic scene in a new way. I let my MLB.TV subscription lapse because I'm more exited to watch USA Crits. That's kind of amazing. Kudos to Justin and the rest of the Legion crew.

A lot of Justin's trials and tribs sound like those faced by U.S. riders on the Euro pave for decades, no? It's a hard-knock life over there, no doubt, and it is great to see him and his team bring their game to the streets of California. And kudos to Specialized for their sponsorship and the free bikes for juniors for big crit wins. And it'd be nice to see an exploration of the BMX scene in California in the Seventies. The races themselves were rough and tumble--those kids were mean but that was the game--but the larger scene was beautiful, kids coming together and riding their bikes together. And I loved riding with my Mexican friends in Pacifica. Such good times with Julio and those guys. And they were fast. And we all dared each other to go faster and let's see who can go father over that jump.
