Priceless build for a young child. Well done. I love the contrasting woods. Thanks for your time and effort. After hearing your safety warning, I want to add this thought...An alternative to the pull rope would be a push handle.

I love this amazing Hungry Hippo - and used the link to Amazon to buy the book, but sadly, the seller will not ship it to Denmark where I live! But having the measurements of the pieces of wood (mentioned in the video) I'll try to make a cousin, instead of an identical twin. Thank you SO much for all these incredible things you make, as you always make me smile, and listen carefully to all the great tips and tricks you share with us. 👍👍👍 .... and let us continue to make sure the little child inside us is playing, laughing, and happy. Otherwise, it might run away one day and never come back again!

Adorable. Right after watching your first build from this book, I bought the book. Lots of cute stuff. Then, I attended a toy workshop that one of my wood working clubs put on and ... we built a bunch of animals from the book! They are more complicated than I thought, but I've learned a lot. Probably will work on these throughout 2023 for Xmas next year. Thanks for your videos.

I should have made the pull rope a little longer because my back is killing me from hunching over walking the hippo with her and her dinosaur. LOL. Thanks for tuning in Randy.

I bought the book recently, and have made my grandson the frog. Dyed it green, with yellow wheels and brown legs. It's currently sitting in the shed waiting for me to find time to put a poly coat on it... then it will probably be for his first birthday next year. These are fun toys, and not too hard to build. I used wheels I bought from ebay, because getting things round without a lathe is just painful.

I really like this toy and made one for my granddaughter. Do you think we could modify the mouth design so it would go up and down when pulled in reverse as well as forward?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 месяцев назад
The lower end of the jaw that actuates the toy could possibly be changed in design to work forwards as well as backwards but it would take a redesign of the entire head I would think. Thanks for tuning in .

That Hungry Hippo is one cool toy! It came out great! What child wouldn't like it. Where do you find such thick hardwood stock? I've never have seen it on our side of the border. I had a book many years ago on making wooden toys. I made a fleet of four types of ships for our son. Two of them had winches and cranes for loading and unloading cargo. He played with them for years. This show was fun to watch! I enjoy watching you make toys. I had a simple mechanical goat that didn't work out on the last whirligig I made so I had to design a different goat to replace it. Now I'm in the process of using the leftover goat as a pull toy. I have all the parts cut out and sanded. I just need to assemble it. It will be sent to the couple who I made the whirligig for to the give to their grand children. Take care!
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Год назад
That goat toy sounds great Michael. As for the thick stock, all of the wood in my shop starts off as 8/4 rough cut stock and I mill it down to what I need as the projects come up. I get my wood from a lumber yard that stocks rough cut stock. Check you local area for 8/4 stock and you might be able to find what you need. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

I'm going to say no Charles. I don't believe it does work in reverse. Now that I've said that , I have to go and check my granddaughter's toy box.......Okay, just checked and it definitely does NOT work in reverse. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
@charles1738
@charles1738 Год назад
@acutabove_woodworkings Thank you for the confirmation. Yes, l was thinking that considering that the front wheel mechanism would probably not spin in reverse, it best be made into a pull-along toy as you have done, therefore moving only in the forward direction. Just happened to have received one of David's books today and looking forward to making toys for my grandkids. Thanks again.

Fantastic for younger kids and will last far longer than the plastic crap you get these days ... brilliant! With regards the pull cord, you could make this out of sections of dowel (say 4" long) tied together, this would reduce the strangulation hazard.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Год назад
That's a great idea for the pull cord Barry. I may have to implement that at some point in time. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your comment. It's appreciated.
@barry.w.christie
@barry.w.christie Год назад
@@acutabove_woodworkings I had it in my head to drill the dowels and tie them together with string, but you could use screw eyes (loop of metal with thread at one end) at each end of the dowel and connected them that way. Of course you then need to think of the dowels as a trip hazard and poking eyes etc ... when you think about the number of things that could go wrong! I don't know how I made it through childhood with bows and arrows, running through railway tunnels etc!!
@secobaairways4585
@secobaairways4585 Год назад
I'm looking to start making this Kenny, I notice that there are dowels at 3/8 inch and some at 5/16 inch, why 2 diameters and do you see a problem if I just stuck to one or the other?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Год назад
Any pattern is able to be modified. I don't see any reason why you couldn't just stick to one as long as you be sure to adjust your drilled holes to match the diameter of the dowel that you will be using. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.
