Brian's never had a mai tai, and Jason is... all too familiar. Trever drops in to walk them through making one step-by-step.
To make this mai tai, what you'll need to do is:
pour one ounce of Plantation Barbados rum (aged 5 years)
pour one ounce of Flor de Cana white rum
pour one ounce of a Curaçao liqueur
pour a three quarter ounce of lime juice
pour a three quarter ounce of orgeat
add crushed ice to your tin
fill your glass to the brim with crushed ice
pour your liqueur into your tin and cap it off
shake briefly (three seconds or so)
pour into your glass
pour some over-proof rum (Dark Meyer's Rum) on top of your drink
garnish with a spanked mint
drink

Mai Tai (1944), Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron - 3/4 to 1 oz lime juice - 1/4 oz orgeat - 1/4 oz simple syrup (rich or demerara works nicely; or just 1/2 oz orgeat if you really love the stuff) - 1/2 oz curacao - 2 oz aged Jamaican rum (alternate recipe: 1 oz aged Jamaican, 1 oz aged agricole; also, Denizen 8 is an exceptional rum that was crafted specially for this recipe) Combine in shaker with plenty of crushed ice. Shake and pour into double old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a spent lime shell and a mint sprig. Further reading: "You Deserve a Mai Tai - A Real One, That Is" www.eater.com/drinks/2016/11/10/13544698/mai-tai-recipe-history Cheers!

You get hats off for using crushed ice. A big hats off. You get a thumb down for not using Jamaican rum, which is fermented differently, and a staple for Mai Tai. You also get a thumb down for the floater, there is no floater in the REAL Mai Tai. Overall, yours is still way much more closer to the original as many of the fake Mai Tai videos on RU-vid. (I hope you are making your own Orgeat instead of using the corn syrup based artificially flavored ones you find in most bars.)

Not all of us are compilers. Natural language is our preferred means of communication, albeit less precise and more ambiguous than formal languages like programming languages. Comments provide meta information about the program, reasons for choosing this implementation, known issues, hints for future readers (including yourself). Commenting interfaces is an especially good thing to do. Implementations don't need to be commented heavily if their interfaces are sufficiently documented. That is, a well-written implementation for a given method is rarely more than 20 language statements (typically around 5 to 10). Thus, if you know what the method is supposed to it, it should be straightforward to understand the mechanics of it. Meaningful in this context has two parts: First: the comment can be understood by the people who read it. Two: the comment says something that is likely to be not understood by the same readers unless it was present. So: who are your readers?

Considering it's a Mai Tai, this was a lot more true to history than I expected, but the traditional tiki recipes are complex and carefully engineered so I have to play the tiki stickler here. Please shake with crushed ice and do not strain. Please don't use a float. Please include a spent lime shell. The original rum was a J. Wray & Nephew rum, so please use at least one Jamaican rum (Myers does not count because there shouldn't be a float)! And points for mentioning Lemon Hart 151 (which is basically unobtainable) but please don't mention Bacardi 151 as an acceptable overproof rum! I wouldn't have made a big deal if Victor Bergeron hadn't been invoked. If we want to talk about accurate history of this illustrious drink it's good to try to approach the inimitable original 1944 recipe.

Murphy says; nothing exotic about orgeat, it's on all the shelves. Probably in most civilized places, and even in a lot of boomtowns, but out here on what remains of the frontier you'd most likely either need to make your own or drive a couple hundred miles to buy it.

Dark rum float? Controversial for a mai tai... The original recipe used just one type of rum (17 year aged Wray & Nephew), lime, orgeat, curacao and rock candy syrup (what these guys would call 'heavy' syrup). Sadly 17 year old W&N is not around anymore but any good aged rum will work.
@Evan-xx3lw
@Evan-xx3lw 6 лет назад
Iain Meldrum Use Denizen 8 Merchant Reserve. It is a blend of agricole and dark Jamaican potstill
@jrcu19
@jrcu19 6 лет назад
You could also use a blend of a Jamaican rum and a Martinique agricole rum.
@CorySchoolland
@CorySchoolland 6 лет назад
@Evan, Denizen 8 is a great choice, but there's no agricole in it-just aged Jamaican and "rhum tradiccionel" (molasses-based) rum from Martinique. Makes a phenomenal Mai Tai :)
@CorySchoolland
@CorySchoolland 6 лет назад
@jcru19, you could, but Trader Vic probably never did. Based on his description of the Martiniqan rum he used as one of the subs for W&N, it was most likely molasses-based. So if you wanna be true to the trader, just use good aged rum, at least some of it Jamaican. Of course, the Mai Tai is a forgiving recipe that rewards experimentation, and the Jamaican + agricole combo sure is tasty :)

CURACAO AINT MADE FROM ORANGES! Its made from Laraha in the Curacao island!
@JohnRodriguez1
@JohnRodriguez1 7 лет назад
Laraha is just the natives' word for the same fruit just as Laranja is the exact translation for Orange in Portuguese and Naranja is in Spanish--notice the similarities. This is not to say that they taste the same. I understand the local variety that is used to make Curacao liqueur is bitter. It's best to view the Laraha (or "Bitter Orange," which is the English description that is often given) as just another varietal, similar to the various grapes and apples you can find at the market. And for the record, Curacao is made only from the Bitter Orange peels, not the actual fruit.

Don't let someone that does so little for you control so much of you
@luckymunro7255
@luckymunro7255 8 лет назад
Where to begin. If you were obsessed with tiki, you wouldn't mock the Trader part of Trader Vic. He earned that name fair and square, by trading for decor, for drinks, for work, et cetera. Secondly, never drink a mai tai from a straw. Drinking things from a straw completely changes the flavor. People don't realize that in general. Your acids probably became a little more prominent when you did that, which is a good thing because......too much orgeat, and too much curacao. This drink was probably VERY sweet. Or, at least, it would have been, if the bartender didn't ruin it by pouring Myers "rum" on top, which, is a hallmark of a Hawaiian Mai Tai (Also created by Trader Vic), not a proper mai tai. And Myers is hardly a rum. It contains both vermouth, and a quinine. It's heavy doctored and tastes like the bottom of a tire after it has sat parked for a day on hot blacktop. Oh, and the mint is a VERY important part of a mai tai. let's ignore the shitty wine glass for a second, and that it was poured into the pineapple. (The pineapple, however, is awesome for drinking poolside when they don't allow glass.) A mai tai should be served with an upside down lime shell, and a LARGE sprig of mint, no stem. Here's why: a lot of taste comes from smell. Smell can completely change the flavor of something. Google that shit. In this case, you should be getting a nose full of mint every time you take a sip. When you sip on a perfectly balanced mai tai, and get a nose full of mint, then, and only then, will you understand what a beautiful drink it is.
@luckymunro7255
@luckymunro7255 8 лет назад
Oh, wait, and for the record, the Mai Tai was post WWII. The Mai Tai Swizzle, which is a completely different cocktail, was briefly on the menu at Don the Beachcomber's in 1937. Modern cocktail historians and enthusiasts believe that when Don said that Vic stole his drink, that he meant the QB Cooler, which, although it has completely different ingredients, tastes VERY similar when made properly. QB was for the Quiet Birdmen, by the way. And, lastly, Don never sued Vic. After Don left to serve in WWII, his wife took over the business, and, eventually, sold to the SunVac corporation. The lawsuit took place in 1971. Vic won, and rightfully so, and declared victory by taking out a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal. Ironically, the New York City Trader Vic's location was closed by Donald Trump when he bought the building, because he thought it was "tacky."
