Thanks for the shout out on my plates and templates! It was a pleasant surprise to see this video in my subscription feed this morning. Looking forward to seeing how it all comes together! -Kevin James Faction Guitars
Oh and the businessman who makes boutique guitars for a living. That’s not the easiest thing in the world and that being your full time job. Has a pin router already paid for. I sure if someone was to give you one free along with help pay for the extra floor space that big footprint needs. You’d consider it. Though personally I like the hands on pin router. Wish I had room & budget for one. Good vid Matt.
CNC is a huge learning curve . I’m a machinist / welder / Electrician and wanna be guitar builder . I love the old machinery . Give me an old Bridgeport mill or a lathe , band saw , sander I could make almost anything ! I did have an old simple NC milling machine that didn’t have all these g codes and stuff , at an old shop I worked at and was able to take measurements right from a print and input them . Made some hard do do stuff on it and it worked out great
That was fun and informative. The grain on that body blank was very nice. Definitely a stain burst like a bourbon burst going to a yellow or orange....Thank you!
Thanks for a great video. I just love the offset style guitars but never heard of the maurada - I have been building my first offset guitar inspired by the Novo serus J model as documented on my channel, but I have to say I struggled with getting the template just right. Thanks for reminding me how important it is to have a great template. 👍🏼
This one will be the version with all the switches, pots and stuff, right? Like, who wants three knobs and a switch when you can fit like 12 controls in there LOL. Pin routers are amazing, just a bit dangerous. The fact that you are in one piece gives you even more credit ;)
You should have a dust shoe on that pin router ... just like all us CNC'ers ;) Design style of the dust shoe is important though, not sure what you've tried on there yet since we haven't seen it, but check out all the variations in the desktop CNC market and you might find one with good advancements that could fit your machine. Brushes work best. There are some that use magnets for easy on/off.
Love the way you can actually see the cut on the pin router instead of wait and see with a hand router. CNC sucks the fun out of making sawdust. Friend wanted me to buy CNC, money not problem, but hell if I have to use a computer I may as well just use it to order a premade part than have a machine make it half ass.
It depends what you do. If seen someone making "master-bodies", takes all the measurements and can CC those while having lots of time for intricate inlays and fretting. It's all what you want to achieve and how much you build and if you're alone. I still get what you're saying.
Great video as always , Matt !! I love the Marauder body shape !! Always have !! Glad to see you make one !! I want to build one with a bit more of a modern set up . Maybe with a Floyd & HSH . Any thoughts / opinions ? I appreciate your input & thanks for what you do !!!
Great video as always Matt!! I’ve wanted a pin router for so long and a couple of weeks ago I finally found a SCM R8 in good shape but I didn’t get many router bits for it. What sizes and profiles would you recommend, which do you most commonly use? Love your channel, humour and builds! Keep up the good work! William Nääs Sweden
We use all kinds of bits you will be surprised how many bits will just start "appearing" you will need a lot of them. The one I use the most is a 2" long 1/2 inch bit
I wonder how you did that, cleaning the tighter curves , nice ! Gorgeous beautiful swamp ash! That shaper is awesome and scary at same time! Can see your respect using it. Totally agree with BS😉philosophy, 🙂, of the connection between artists and tools used... spot on . Thanks Matt for the morning break ,...4 hrs yard work🥴😂. Steve
The shaper looks like something that could be used in an old James Bond movie. During the fight, the villain immobilizes James, and pushes his hand dangerously close to the high speed dilaceration blades, but in the last second James reverts the situation, and the villain, trying some dirt trick, ends being caught by the machine. _[Wilhelm scream]_
I knew the man who built the original mid 60's Marauders, so I got to play a few of the prototypes. There was a reason they failed to launch. It was like Fender was competing with the Italians and Japanese for the most absurd amount of switches and chrome that they could get away with. The pickups were odd, rectangular things that were pretty powerful as I recall. There was four of them underneath the pickguard with the proportional amount of switches. It was a mess. The new CBS owners wanted "innovative", and it almost ruined Fender as a result. It was one of those designs that's only really cool in retrospect, due in large part because it's so rare. Like the Moderne. Ugly as sin, but you just have to smile when you see one. I'm positive that you guys will improve on the design and make something cool and playable.
The tool shouldn’t get in the way. I think old school is damned sexy, and there’s something wonderful about connecting with the wood itself. Do things because you love them.
ahh, Type II (because I see 3 typical fender pickup routs, not 4 hidden 16 pole single routs) with a jag talent bar. I'm just not a big fan of slider switches...my opinion. Ive seen some cool reproductions with rocker switches. As far as a Type I: I doubt the hidden under the plastic pick guard pickups, while making playability better, would have held any tonal comparison to what modern players would want or use. It looks cool, if you can find a picture of one. I was never a fan of the Mustang bridge, either, but you fixed that on yours. All that rambling just to say I like it, and it's cool, like the Moderne. Lost prototypes can be fun! BTW, I saw the EVH PRS, and I'm glad he passed. I'll email or FB Message you my opinions, if you care...lol
With your pin router, do you use a carbide end mill? Or is it an end mill for wood? The shaper, what kind of mill do you use for it? In the machine shop world we have hogging tools like that, they have multiple cutting inserts around the cutter in a spiral pattern. I really like the build videos, keep those coming, when are you going to finish that sg bass?
Cool, too many switches for me! When your in the middle of a tune, I hate that feeling of “maybe this switch will sound better” Keep up the excellent work Matt and Chris, AKA TOG!
Hi Matt, Mrs.Toast & Texas Toast, I have ask you this before and the name of your build has slipped my mind. Billy Gibbons Gretsch Billy Bo. I love that shape. My son has been playing/learning guitar about a year & half or two. I would like to get him one. He & I are going to want The Texas Toast Build without a doubt. I can not remember your name for it. I’m paying for an EVH Frankie right now & soon as it’s done I will call your shop and see if or when you will and make the arrangements and follow your process. You guys are awesome and always willing to pass on what you know. I definitely respect that. If you see this please drop me the name and we’ll talk to you fairly soon. Please think about it talk later. Thanks James Burrough (Little Rock,AR)
FYI found a JET PIn Router on Ebay now, they are asking $1,250 in case anybody looking for one after all the Texas Toast tantalizing vidoes!!. Alas, my shop is too small for a 48"X48" foot print and it's a Tuff Shed so floor not going to handle weight. Hope this helps somebody. Its a white one model POR_22-3 so different age than one in video (?)
You know how it is David, there are CNC machines and then there are CNC machines. I don't think that the stuff small shops have is even in the same zip code as far as speed goes but people are terrified of those high speed cutters
Thanks Matt! A question: what would you prefer to have in your shop, a table saw or mitre saw, and which one is better for guitar building (especially if you dont have an radial arm saw)
Your left side mustache is getting longer and thicker than the right!! Oh yeah this is a tutorial video! We need Chris to do these! Your mustache is too distracting! What ever happened to the acrylic Matt-O-caster we talked about a few months ago?
Have had bad luck with laser cut templates, especially the neck pockets being way off square. I see you use these from Faction Guitars so they must be better, can you speak on this topic please.
Never knew pin routers existed - my reaction GTFO! WITCHCRAFT! I gotta admit, I only know of you guys from Brad Angove's jokey trash-talking during the 2020 Great Guitar Build Off. Came here from someone's link about the Marauder. Anyway, I was watching with the sound off and couldn't figure out how you were free-handing those cutouts, then I hit rewind, sound on and learned about pin routers. Learn something new every day, right? Anyway, I enjoyed the video and I totally dig the desire to use an older style of tool even if there's something newer or more efficient available. Sure one could do this with a CNC but there can be a pretty steep learning curve on many of them. Also, if an older method works just as well I don't see where the newer method is much better except maybe you can go do something else while the CNC is working. That's about the only advantage I can see. Yeah, safety might be an issue but it doesn't look like the pin router is any more dangerous than using a regular router or shaper.
Lusting for a pin router after your videos !!! Big tools! Grizzly is 615 pounds and 35 inches, hard fit for my new 6'x16' " one ass" Tuff Shed shop! Ha ha!
When you start to dig into it, it is amazing how many weird, and in most cases utterly crap guitar models Fender and Gibson have made, or thought about making, over the years.
Remember the Arrow and the Maverick? Fender had leftover parts and needed money after the guitar boom started to fade. They weren't alone. It was an ugly time for guitar design.
When the pin router was first introduced, there was undoubtedly people with the same feelings as we can now have about cnc. Sure we can complain now the effects it has on traditional trade skills and creativity and it’s true. But looking to the future it seems some kid gets a neural link and bluetooths his programming right from his brain to a cnc router, cnc guys are going to feel it too... no this is old school. Ethernet cable plugged right into a vintage laptop. Lol
All right, Pin Router Pundit, I have a question. With an, uh, "smallish" budget firmly in place, Do you think it would be possible to make a "sort-of" pin router out of a drill press, or would that not spin fast enough?
A drill press isn’t a router. It spins too slowly and isn’t good for pressing anything sideways against the bit. It’s made for up and down motion. You can probably build something to hold a hand held router over a pin, I did this once with a Dremel, but it won’t plunge.
Thanks David and M J. I can't just pop round the corner and pick up a pin router. My big problem is money, and I have a table top drill press, already. That brought me to my question about the speed. Thank you for confirming my suspicion. There is a possible bright spot, however. I have a Dremel, AND... wait for it... an attachment that turns it into a plunge router. I'd forgotten about that. It would be rather small, but maybe if I move slowly, and gradually increase the depth... I think a test is in order. 👍
@@GreyMatterStew I’ve never owned a pin router, but I used one at a shop I worked at. When I was fully equipped I had a band saw, drill press, jointer, planer, belt sander, router table, a shaper, and several hand held routers, sanders, etc. These days I have two drill presses (pillar and bench top), router table, belt sander, spindle/edge sander, and a table saw, which I never had. I don’t have a band saw or a jointer, which is a pain, but I’ve built several guitars with this setup. I rough cut bodies with a jigsaw, and use templates and routers to finish. So like Matt always says, you don’t need a pin router. You can use hand held routers and a router table. And hand tools. I use a hand planes and stuff, which I hadn’t done in the past. Be creative. 😄
@@TexasToastGuitars I've been wanting to do a shape like this with a semi hallow body. My skills are not there lol. I'm still trying to get the template down.
