It's really important to make time for yourself to do the things that make you happy. Whether it's camping on a Welsh mountain, doing your best painting of a watering can or jumping out of aeroplanes, we all need to make sure that we allow ourselves to do the things that relax us, excite us and make us feel alive.
This was another trip where I was on the brink of canning it off and doing something that was easier, but as always, I thanked myself for putting in the effort and reaping the rewards. Get out there and enjoy what you enjoy!

Always make time for yourself. It's so important to be selfish enough to drag yourself away from family and commitments. They all get the best version of you for the time away. I know for me personally I'm a better Dad, partner and friend for my wild camping escapes 😊 As always, love your content James 😊 Stay safe and well, Adge

That's exactly what I said to the fella I talked to on this camp 😊 Yes, you're away from your family for a few hours, but they'll get a better version of you if you're able to look after yourself 👌 I'm glad you recognise that and put that approach into action! Thanks for tuning in and sharing your thoughts 🙏🏻 James.

Nice vid👍I've made a conscious effort this year to cut the miles down but be out for more hours ( mainly because of knee problems) as being out in the mountains is more important nowadays and gives you time to enjoy the scenery more.i use the cumulus 350 as it extends the season in which I can use it I'm good down to 0c with base layer only slightly negative is the horizontal baffles across the body I find the down can migrate to the sides but apart from that it's a great quilt.
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Год назад
Thanks Craig. That's a good move to make sure you get as much time outdoors as possible. I wish I'd bought the Quilt 350 in hindsight for that very reason - making it more versatile through the seasons. I'd forgotten just how comfortable quilt sleeping is! Thanks for watching 👍

I'm debating getting an xtherm for winter camping or just pairing an accordion pad with my current one for $60 vs the $300 for the pad. In your mind is it worth the money or just get the accordion pad to add 2R (6.2 with my Nemo tensor)?
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Год назад
This question is way more taxing and complicated than I was ready for, hence this long answer! If you go for the two pad option you'd save money. It would also allow you to use one mat or the other, so if your Nemo is lighter than the Thermarest, you could possibly save weight on warmer camps? You'd also effectively be carrying a sit mat with you on camps where you take both mats, so you could sit on the ground on your accordion mat before lying on it later. If you buy the Thermarest, you'll still have your Nemo (unless you sell it), so you could still use it in summer, assuming it's lighter than the Thermarest. Personally, I've never thought to myself "I wish I had a less insulated sleep mat", so I'm happy to take my ~600 gram Thermarest on all my camps. There aren't many mats on the market as that are as thick as the Thermarest that can offer a significant weight saving (i.e. they weigh 300 grams or less), so the Thermarest really covers all bases for me. Their latest "NXT" range is even thicker and lighter too, so if it were me, I think I'd go for one!
@granthw4993
@granthw4993 Год назад
@@joinmeoutdoors yeah my current one works very well for 3 season camping, it's just during my winter camping I noticed that I got cold spots and 4.2 wasn't enough. My Nemo is only 450g ish and the new NXT Xtherm is about the same weight. Generally winter trips are very close to home and my summer base weight is about 12-13lbs with my lack never being more than 20 but it's good to hear your thoughts on it. I do have the thermarest sit pad so I was going to try and layer that under my core where the core spots are next winter first to see if it helps anything but extra warmth for the full pad is just a bit nicer
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Год назад
Well it's easy to spend other people's money for them, but if you're going out camping a good few times a year, investing in the extra warmth without sacrificing weight seems easy to justify to my mind. Sleep mats have come on a long long way in 30 years, and the latest Thermarest offerings are really impressive. I see some people using those 1/4" foam roll mats for lightweight summer camping, but I like having the comfort and insulation too much! 😁

What a great overnighter! Absolutely brilliant time lapse of the short lived night sky too 👍🏻 Gotta watch out for them ticks, I picked up my 3rd the other day on a 3-night trip wild camping up in the Lakes.. I even had had one on my sleeping pad in the morning while I was enjoying my morning coffee, it was so tiny, that one got cremated over my gas stove! I’ve seen them crawling on rocks as well, so just be aware. I’m totally paranoid about them now after my 3rd also, think I’m going to have to go down the Permethrin route, as I really don’t want anymore of the horrid critters in my skin!! I won’t even put my bag on the grass in the tent vestibule anymore, it has to come inside with me. By the way, what’s happened to James 2?.. not seen him for a while 😂
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Год назад
Cheers Scoot! Yeah night time only felt about as long as it looked in the timelapse too!! Urgh I wouldn't be sad if ticks went extinct tomorrow. You make a good point about them crawling onto our rucksacks overnight. Perhaps I'll take a bin bag so I can tie my rucksack up inside it overnight. James 2 does appear to have been absent for a few camps again, now that you mention him 🤔🤣

A few years ago I picked up a tick on my leg in November despite wearing long pants and gaiters, not thinking it could be a tick in view of circumstances I thought it was a blood blister and made a mess of removing it. As luck would have it I didn’t have a bacterial infection so be aware to check yourself whenever you have been in the outdoors. Ticks in the uk were unheard of in the 70s to the late 90s
@joinmeoutdoors
@joinmeoutdoors Год назад
That sounds a bit nasty. I don't like that they're all scurrying around out there with the potential to infect us. I didn't realise they'd ramped up so markedly. I remember my granny's dog getting them in the 90s, but perhaps that was unusual at the time.
@KOL630

I hate ticks with a passion. Heinous creatures and they’re basically invincible too. Seems to be loads of them about now. Not sure why. I camped in a field in Devon a while ago and there were loads of them. Must’ve been sat on a damn nest. They were tiny though pin head size. Impossible to see them. Another story, my pal camped on Salisbury plains a while ago and left his tent door open all night. He was drunk lol. In the morning he had over fifteen ticks on him. On his ball sack and everything 😬 horrifying! Take no chances out there. He was just lucky none were infected. Final story. My dad got lymes from a tick in the garden in france. Noticed the huge rash and caught it early but he didn’t even realise he’s been bitten at the time. Nice video as always.

Thank you very much. I sometimes wonder about making a video about how I make videos, but imagine there wouldn't be masses of appetite for it. Perhaps I could do one one day? Apart from my very first video and the last two videos, I've purely filmed with my GoPro 9. On these last two videos I've been spoilt by my new GoPro 11 - a collaborative birthday present from my girlfriend and parents. That's the camera responsible for the star trails clip in this video - a feature I'd like to make more/better use of in the future. I was glad you'd told me about the wind in that spot.
