Shot a beautiful 12 point buck up in NE Wisconsin on smaller acreage following Jeff's videos and books. No atv during deer season, water holes, the start of food plots, mock scrapes, and most importantly A PLAN!

How do I do depth of cover on a 40 acre horseshoe island of woods with a 9 acre pasture/hayfield in the middle of the "horseshoe" shape, almost surrounded by corn? Do I just tell my wife "hey, we're not having as much hayfield as you think"? lol

Hell yeah! I did the same, watched 100’s of videos, made a plan based on what I learned about my little 16 acres and what I learned about my bigger neighbors. Stayed out all hunting season till first week of Nov, hunted a couple temp drop days and smashed a big 12 pt. Hunted like the Viet Cong were looking for me. Learned a lot.

Just getting started with your principles. Working with ~8 acres in suburban/ country/small ag area. After getting some of the plan going this past summer this hunting season I've gone from seeing 5 doe and 2 bucks last year on average to seeing 17 doe/yearling and 6 bucks this season, and I even totally messed up the food this year. The depth of cover & nonintrusive principles alone have blessed us bigtime. Thanks for sharing your experience with us

We have a 40 acre farm we're hunting a buddy owns, it's extremely thick.. it's half of an 80 acre wood, our half is the thick stuff, the other half not owned and not permitted to hunt is the timber, they have feeders I've hunted in the back of our land and heard them kick on, but unsure exactly where they are at, there's a small clearing maybe a half acre we cut out to put a food plot in with a Amish built box blind on the north end, we have several small bucks on camera and very few does, there isn't much for large enough trees for stands and the ones that do have stands are basically useless at this point because they're on the outskirts of the property where they are affective when certain ag fields are planted was beans this year and not corn so the deer aren't there, I was given permission a week into season, and also given full permission to alter the land with the land owner however we see fit. It has so much damn potential it's just a bear to figure out. I'm gonna grab a copy of the book mentioned to read up on, but man I'm sitting on a cherry here but need some serious help, to make it what it deserves to be.

Jeff, all your content is great but you hit a home run with this episode. Hunters and landowners need to watch this one over and over until they get it. Depth of cover is the number one key to holding deer on a property, especially in daylight hours. We all have heard of and seen a farm that “hunts bigger than it’s size.” You are preaching the truth here. Fantastic episode sir.

Wow, this is a true eye opener. I’ve got 120 acres of almost pure old untouched forest surrounded by public land that holds few if any deer. Hunting has been horrible the last few years since I moved here. I’m buying your book to try to rehab it. A lot of work, I know.
@johno252

Awesome video! Never thought of the depth of cover concept. Makes perfect sense as I have a small foodplot on brothers-in-law's 12 acre parcel and it just holds does. He has his house up front of this long narrow parcel and has close neighbors up front with maybe 2.5 acres of woods at the very back and probably 2.5 acres of CRP in front of that(it does stand year round). Neighbors nearby have heavy cover on one side, 35 acres of CRP on the other side and heavy timber over beyond that. My foodplot, corn pile, mock scrape, and mineral site, have some great bucks at night and I'll randomly get good bucks on cam through the rut if I've got a hot doe. Very limited good buck sightings in daylight so this makes perfect sense with how I currently have this property. At the very back of the propery and surrounded on the creek bottom on one side, I have a foodplot back up against the woods, then the 2.5 acres of CRP giving cover to the house and the neighbors from viewing the foodplot. Anyways, thanks for the video, you have my mind rolling now!

Jeff, I’m confused when I hear you reference large Crp tracts as poor cover. Do you reference just laying cover? I have crp (15 acres) that stands well till late winter, and the deer use it all through hunting season. Especially after pressure hits from surrounding property. I routinely watch bucks cruising trails through it, and watch does get pushed into it by mature bucks during hunting hours. Keep up the videos. Alway good info!
@SuperWhitetail1
@SuperWhitetail1 2 года назад
Hey Jim. What Jeff is alluding to is that crp is a monoculture of grass, and therefore not a food source. Quality bedding always has an element of food to it to fulfill the needs of feedings 1&2. If you live in a zone where the crp will stand in the winter, then it will be utilized for travel but deer will tend to bed along the edges (to be adjacent to food) rather than utilizing the total crp acreage as bedding. To maximize the area, if not under program restrictions, install pockets of pollinator blends, and/or early successional growth inside the crp acreage, assuming your crp is this and provides adequate cover 0-4ft of the ground. By adding the food and edge element to this acreage, itll turn from quality travel to quality travel and bedding. Hope this helps

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 года назад
Hi Nick that's tough...may be there is no good cover between you and the deer. They wait until dark and then move. In that case you have to get closer to where they bed during daylight OR change the habitat to make it thicker between you and where they bed to hold them closer.

@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 2 года назад
Hi Drew that really depends on timber value and availability of loggers in your area. For me personally I drop undesirable/non dominant mast or market value trees. I completely cut them...not hinging them. Just a handful every 50 yards can make a HUGE difference without sacrificing mast or overall value. The dead tree itself adds side cover value and the open canopy creates natural regen/browse/cover. I have a lot of that to do myself this year!

Got a quick question if you’ve got time to answer. I’ve got a 30 acre parcel that’s almost like a marsh. It’s got some trees and high stem count all over. It’s full of bedding during early season, problem is that once all the tall grass dies in late fall and winter the deer disappear. Should I plant a food plot to see if they’ll stick around? It does have one small creek and a larger creek running on ends of the property

Food is king put in a food plot screen it and only hunt it 3 or 4 times the whole season best weather days maybe thicken up the edge with cutting timber hinge cuts. But good is the driving force just can't over hunt it or it will turn nocturnal in a heartbeat

I’ve heard Jeff in other videos say you can definitely recreate on the land even ATVs and such but what you want is no pressure or disturbance during hunting season or just before. In the same situation. Suggest screening reasonable distance around house and main road. Linear food plots in front with cover for does and heavier cover on back of property. While considering what's going on in surrounding property. Regular activity doesn't seem to bother deer much but visibility from it does. I am surrounded by hunting club's so being selective on only hunting on best days in right stands is critical. Hope this is helpful.

Great video, thanks Jeff! Quick question. On our 40 acres, our new house is on top. I want to establish depth of cover, but worried about putting food plot too close to house with noisey kids always out playing in yard. How far back should I put food?

I hunt with my grandpa. Might as well take a baby in the woods. He makes me hate the hunt when "we go".

You will miss him when he’s gone. Endure it now while he can still go.
