Great to see a joiner at work, Could you tell me were you got your bench on wheels from?

Hi Jim, My brother is a fabricator and made it for me, its a pretty simple construction of 2" box section, with one open side and lockable castors. very handy and the same height as my machinery. I used a 25mm ply top then add a sacrificial mdf top to that which i will replace/turn over periodically.

Hi, video a big help as trying to replicate the same on a single gate 1800 h x 820 wide. Have also watched your cutting braces video which is great, but as in this video 7.57 in I have to cut the midrail to take the braces. You mention angle has to be 45degree but in this video you are just using a tape measure ( after positioning the strip of mdf) can you tell me what you are working out here and secondly the angle you apply to notching the brace into the midrail. Any help appreciated.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
I placed the line from corner to corner of the gate then measured off that line half the width of the brace to give me parallel lines where the edge of the brace will intersect the middle rail. Then i can align the jug with them marks and cut out. I wouldnt worry about the notch angle aslong as it lodges in itll go nowhere. keep to a standard angle will make it simpler to cut on the saw...

"Hook and Band" 36" ones from memory but thats a fair while ago now. Usually get stainless steel ones from 1st fix south (google it)

What adhesive and sealant are you using?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 5 лет назад
I use a combination of 30 minute PU glue (sovereign Chemicals) and for sealant before painting it's known as a v groove sealer. There are a few brands making it but I use either the sikkens one (Kodrin) or teknos.

Looks nice timber, do you mind if I ask is it expensive? From n Ireland, but never heard of it... you have a lot of felder machines, which I am currently saving for, are they as good as everyone raves about?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 6 лет назад
MrMicky1976 it is Expensive, it's around £2300 Inc VAT per m3. So similar money to prime European Oak. They sell a MDF variant too called Tricoya. Can use it outside with no worries. They are cracking machines for their usability. They aren't as heavy duty as the old kit like wadkin but they have lasted me well with a bit of care. I wouldn't change them for anything, weighing up cost/versatility/ size of the machines they are perfect for me.

Love your work, can I ask what you made gates out of?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 6 лет назад
MrMicky1976 Thanks Micky, the timber is Accoya, it a modified timber through acetalization. Namely radiata pine, that gives is extreme durability properties and also extreme stability. It actually comes with a 50 year guarantee against visible signs of rot. It's a awesome product.

Where did you get your start/ knowledge?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
A local joinery shop for 4 years and 15+ years of absolutley loving joinery, i learnt the basics there and have furthered myself with research and trial error on many different areas since. Its the passion thats helped me learn not the person teaching i think.

Why is the bottom rail hidden on the gates, rather than framing the tongue and groove boards?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 2 года назад
It's a much better Practical design to have the boarding run to the bottom of the door. If you run the boarding into a rail the gate will rot quicker as it creates a stop point for water running down the boarding. Also means end grain of boards ar not able to be maintained along with it not being traditional.

Where do you get your accoya from mate? 🙏

I use James Lathams, what used to be the Wigston Depot, but is now j21a of the M1.

Could you also tell me how you calculate the height of your haunches?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 6 лет назад
I like to see a decent wedge depth, usually wedge up to 80mm, so if you have a 150mm rail, i will have a deeper haunch to say a 100mm stile. Things like casements with very narrow stiles i usually favour wedge length and a very small haunch to stop twisting of the tenon only.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 6 лет назад
No Worries, I'm glad the video is of interest. The Stiles on these are 55mm thick and the TGV is 16mm I would normally seek a 58mm stile finish, but I had 2.5" timber for the bare face rails and I needed to split that into a rail and a TGV board, 39mm and 16mm respectively. (you can see me doing that in the video) so it brought the overall thickness down to 55.

Great bit of carpentry and enjoyable to see such a top job. However, that music arghhhh. I'm afraid I could take no more. Didn't relate in any way to the job in hand in my humble opinion 🙂

@@BradshawJoinery well it's certainly the best video on here for gate making so got to be worth doing it and it would be much nicer with a bit of commentary from yourself. Just my opinion though, keep up the good work 🙂

I could really do with the wheel type “feather board” you have on your bandsaw. Is it unique to your bandsaw or something you purchased aftermarket?
