Experience design is at the core of our product development. To design the best end-to-end experience, we conduct user research to make our products the most accessible and inclusive vehicles on the road.
We recently invited wheelchair users to test our ramp prototypes at our Banbury R&D lab to better understand their needs and ensure that the Arrival Bus is accessible to everyone.

For accessibility, you want the door glazing to extend as low as possible. Speaking as a bus driver, this allows me to position the bus much more accurately relative to the raised curb at the bus stop, reducing the gap for all passengers and allowing some wheelchair users to board without deploying the ramp at all.

It is important ! For example, here in Morocco, the Tram is accessible with a wheelchair but not Buses.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 3 года назад
@@bort_1265 actually, it’s very important. For one, having a motorised ramp instead of a manual one. Many wheelchair users complain about drivers telling them they can’t be bothered. In addition, they talked about making sure you had enough stable room to get your ticket and turn around. Most “accessible” buses do not yet offer this. You are fighting the tilt of the bus when getting your ticket and then there is not enough room to turn around, so you are left doing a 3-point, 5-point, etc turn to actually get to your seats, all while the bus driver is already pulling away. Ensuring the side doors and not only the front doors are accessible too is also very important. You may think it’s a lot of marketing nonsense but it actually is rare for an automotive company to put this attention to detail. Most just have a box-ticking attitude to accessibility, doing only the bare minimum to not get into legal trouble.
@maxmustermann595
@maxmustermann595 3 года назад
@@kaitlyn__L Twenty to thirty years ago busses in Germany had motorized ramp. Then they switched to manual ramps. Why? They ar unintuitive to use and with a tiny piece of dirt in the wrong place they don't work. Manual Ramps are easy to use, can't really break and in many cases even passengers can pull them out. The second way accesibility is improved is by redesigning the bus stops so there ist almost no gap or height difference anymore, which is well under way. And people with heavily impeared mobility get free transport on public transport in Germany anyway so no need to buy a ticket.

Newsflash: I was on crutches for 6 months. I found a low floor city bus allready was the most accessible vehicle in the world. Next question? All you are doing is erginomic features, and hair & makeup. If you want to build bridges make more accessible coaches. Manual flip ramps are best for wheelchair users as they involve the least faffing around by an incomptetent driver.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L 3 года назад
On the contrary, those buses are primarily seen as accessible by crutch and cane users. Many wheelchair users find there is not enough room to turn around, and also many drivers make a fuss about having to get out to operate the ramp. With a minority outright refusing (but if you call to complain and don’t have a ticket number to cite, they usually can’t help you. You can tell them it’s the number 11 bus which just left x stop all you like, even with the GPS, they claim they can’t identify the bus and driver without a ticket number.) Most wheelchair users explicitly campaign for motorised ramps to be standard explicitly because they are often put off bus travel by the public humiliation of having a driver tell them to try and get on without the ramp before he’ll get out and do it. If you look in disability activist spaces online you’ll see this is an exceedingly common complaint about buses. The bus is already motorised leaning before opening the door - extend the ramp at the same time, for all passengers. Simple. Additionally, this bus design has made sure to not impede on floor space with the grabrails. Many of my wheelchair using friends get a front wheel caught between a grab rail and a trim piece when trying to turn around in the inadequate space (needing a 3-point turn or even a 5-point turn even before getting a stuck wheel) which as already mentioned is something they focused on.

I started questioning my investment when I saw 1. faceshield?!?! no wonder, it's going crazy in UK. 2. that plywood is ultra thin and those wood blocks?!?! can't they get a straight long block. 3. Accessibility has been there the whole time, ppl with wheel chairs have been able to use the bus for years. It's the comfort of getting on the buses without those crazy bumps that Arrival is making.... this isn't rocket engineering, I can sit right here and have no problem coming up with my own design for that ramp without those pumps. What kind of design team are they putting together over there?!?!?1

Even though it’s a feature on existing buses, it’s often woefully inadequate. All my wheelchair using friends went “holy shit an automatic ramp” when I showed them this. They’ve been asking for that for a long time. It’s about getting the little details correct so you can just go about your trip like everyone else - rather than having to awkwardly navigate a cramped bus that wastes half its floor space on metal tubing and ppl with buggies who resent them needing the space.
