Making Urea Nitrate

Using dry urea and acids a lesser known explosive can be made called urea nitrate. It's not flammable but requires a primary detonator to initiate the explosion. I used a recipe that requires some calculating to finish the production of the urea nitrate. I cover that too, but please skip to the experiment if it doesn't interest you. This is for demonstration purposes ONLY. Please do not attempt.

Thank you for going over the math. A lot of people would just say "oh, I need this concentration", and they have it already prepared but don't say the math. I like you including it, especially the formula so I can convert my 93.5% sulphuric acid. Can I just add the volume of water I need and add it to the urea, then add the correct amount of urea? Then I can use magnetic stirring as I add the acid slowly? Thanks for the great videos by the way. It's amazing now many things can be nitrated. Can you please nitrate toluene for us? I know that's more risky to post. Everyone knows what TNT is, so I don't suggest using the acronym inbthe title, but I'm adding you and hopefully you do it. You are smart and I enjoyed this episode, so I'll be watching your other videos while waiting for TNT. My main question about it is, I HEARD that it's a pain in the a** and you have to nitrate and neutralize it 3 (tri) times. Is this true or does it get the 3 toluene molecules to get nitrated in that way from one nitration? Also, I'm sure (seeing as all the constitutes are liquid that a precipricate forms? I know that TNT is a powder that you can melt without detonation or flachulation (excuse the spelling) and as a liquid it can be poured into artillery shells and rehardened or recrystialized (not sure which and not trying to have the RCMP show up at the door from doing experiments with it in the city so I want a bunch ready for next summer so I can move earth at my cottage next summer. I don't like doing chemistry in a hurry and without knowing the possible common mishaps and without seeing multiple people do it. Like my nephew, who was taking grade 11 chemistry and was told that sulphuric acid was so so corrosive so I gave my high-school aged nephew 5CCs in a glass syringe of 93.5% sulphuric acid (cooled to -35°C and but in a insulated lunch bag with some dry ice so it stayed very cold) and he squirted half of it on the PAD OF A FINGER (don't try this anywhere else, if you don't care about safety now, you will of you get it anywhere other than a finger where the skin is very thick) then he waited 10 seconds untill his finger was getting warn and he washes it off and the teacher made him put his finger in a sodium bicarbonate solution for the rest of class. Really just wasting the finger for a minute is good enough. I told him to only use a little and save the rest to prove to the teacher that it was in fact concentrated sulfuric acid. He got sent to the principals office and was accused of bringing a "chemical weapon" to school. I talked to the principal and explained that it was safe, I literally showed him that trick, and told him sulphuric acid is a joke, if my nephew was going to bring chemicals as a weapon, he would have something much more caustic, like perosufphuric acid (parahana solution) and I assured him that I wouldn't send my nephew to school with potentially harmful chemicals. I got in a small argument with the principal too because it was a new school with new furniture, including couches in the main lobby so I told him that he is exposing all the teens and faculty to formaldehyde given off by adhesives in the new furniture... He didn't like me saying that HE was harming the students and blew up at me. Luckily I'm a calm person or I would have knocked him out the second he yelled at me. Instead I said "I'm not one of your f**king students and unless you want a vacation from work spent at the hospital that he had better treat me with respect, like I was to him before he yelled", but I said it calmly. I also told him that I've done what my nephew did and I saw it on a NileRed video. In the end he got the idiot science teacher to come tell me the "dangers of what I did", but instead we sat for an hour while I explained demonstrations that he could show the class and that I would be happy to show them for free. I'm on disability do to epilepsy and other health issues and have lots of free time. Labs don't want someone who has any chance of having a seziure working in them... So I still do it as a hobby and I am happy that I found a chemical distributor willing to sell almost anything to me. The only thing they ever said that I needed a business to buy was red phosphorus, but that's expected with all the methamphetamine addicts around... I also had to fill out a form, that I think goes to the government, stating my reasons for buying 1kg of potassium permagnate. I had no problems though... there are many useful things to do with it. I even use it and glycerin to start my fires at the cottage and a pinch van make untreaded make water safer to drink, but i drink R/O D.I. water from the lake in the cottage and all the water goes through a huge UVC filter right after leaving the pressure tank. I cant take that everywhere obviously, so i have a few tbsp of permagnate of the boat incase i get stranded. That's why I didn't just buy just 500g. The chem distributor (and possibly the government) said it was okay to buy. Other than that, it's a bi**h getting 50% H2O2 because I can't pick it up myself even though it's a 5 minute drive. They need a shipping company with permission to transport strong oxidizers to deliver it for $40 for a whole 10km. Next time I order it I won't get a liter, I'll get 2.5l like when I but sulphuric acid... the shipping can't be so much more and it will last 2.5 time as long. Other that parahana solution I never need a lot at once in something and most reactions 30% is okay, so I dilute it. Thank God I live in Canada and not the EU, where many important reagents candidates be bought by the public do to the sick violent people throwing on people. They just ruin scientific experiments because so many use it...

You would think they would be more concerned about nitric acid, sodium Nitrate (because you can make fuming nitric acid with it, and sulphuric acid in a simple distillation, (which ruins your joint clips, even when greased with sulphuric acid because it os such a strong oxidize), and other nitrate salts

@cranialconstruction2218
@cranialconstruction2218 Год назад
The mix you made may have deflagrated if it wasn't packed tight enough. Urea nitrate requires a true detonation explosion to initiate its own decomposition and then detonation. It needs to be compressed quickly which breaks the nitrogen bonds sending it into a full detonation. Does that answer your question?

@@cranialconstruction2218 Thank you for the reply. I trust your chemistry more than the bulk chemicals I order. I did the synthesis again (multiplied by 5 given your quantities), I finished with 10 extra grams of recrystalized KNO3 given 500g of KNO3 input. this is NOT an energetic material (already got in trouble for that 😐), this is Urea Nitrate as a flame retardant for my son's treehouse. Excellent video! The next day video shows the power of urea nitrate, and the dangers associated with it. And to think, the power is from the crystals turning into gas at a very fast rate! Could you explain the conversion math for the solid becoming gas, and how it has to expand from the resulting conversion?
@petevenuti7355
@petevenuti7355 Год назад
So it has that property? What other practical usage does it have?
@cranialconstruction2218
@cranialconstruction2218 Год назад
Most chemicals that detonate (vs deflagrate) do so due to the energy released when the bonds between the different molecules within the explosive solid break apart and release of energy. This rather simple principle can be summarized by Einstein's infamous equation E=mc2. Once the energy is released, from the breaking bonds, it causes an immediate shock wave in the air that moves quickly to destroy whatever is in its path. For urea nitrate that shock wave moves at 4,700 meters/sec. Extremely fast. But, not the fastest by any means.
