I would love to see the rest of this hairstyle! No fair leaving us hanging like that! I had hair that long when I was in my 30s, but it is short, now. She has gorgeous hair!
Watching this video is making me feel so relaxed. If I was this girl I would have fallen asleep. Every time anyone plays with my hair I fall asleep, it feels so much better than a full body massage. Lol
The hairstyle is actually very painful to wear and have done because of how hard it is pulled back( many develop baldspots from it) and in the video you can tell how hard the hairdresser was already pulling. It is likely not a relaxing experience at all and she deserves props for never letting out a sound
My father's shotokan instructor who was from Japan also had his pinkie nail long, with the rest cut short. He said it was for scratching (although obviously this guy could have different reasons, but it could also be a cultural quirk of sorts)
Amazing. They must get excruciating headaches with all their hair tied up so tightly. Apparently a Maiko and geisha have to sleep sitting up in order not to ruin their style, because in real life, they only see the hairdresser once a week. I went on a Geisha spotting night tour, in Gion, Kyoto about a month ago. Learnt some fascinating information about geisha and Maiko..
Only maikos use real hair and the still sleep laying down but they use a special head support when they sleep. Geikos wear wigs so the can sleep in any position they want
Looks like ofuku to me. The end goes something like this, once the giant hair extension is wrapped around the base of the mage and the cord through the looped hair, the loop is pulled forwards towards the forehead, the loop is fanned out to two thirds of a circle and then literally tied back around itself. That stick you see at 8:47 is actually a hair extension seriously caked in wax. Another extension is added to the base of the forelock section so that it runs along the base of the cont...
impressive how fast he is and that the poor girl will actually sleep with her hair like that anyone else wonder how it comes out again without ripping up her hair?
Why don't you fix camcorder or smartphone on the tripod? If the source of this video is NOT copy-controlled, you can capture the video into your PC, and upload it❥
+Sonja Muir Apparently often times Maiko develop premature bald spots from all of the pulling. Can you imagine having all that wonderful hair and still getting a bald spot? They must pull like mad. Ouch!
They don't take them out at night. They get their hair done like, once a week and then they have to maintain the style. So no itching or pulling or tugging... and no sleeping on it. They learn to sleep on neck blocks that hold their heads off of the floor.
back in the days, was this a common hair style that everyone wore, or was it just a rich elite people thing? Because it seems a lot of effort and time needs to be dedicated to this pretty hairstyle.
... existing piece the whole lot is shaped and then tied off with a double knotted red cord, then it is tied again a few inches further back. Then secured to the base of the mage along with the other leftovers and tucked out of sight. A few little flyaways here and there, teragami in the back and then kanzashi etc to finish it off.
@lindacat86 a maiko uses a special type pillow which is a block of wood with a small cusion on top and the rest their neck on the cusion and there head kind of gets supported up but im sure it would hurt alot
dang the hairstylist has some nice hands... - and she has wonderfully thick hair. The long pinky might mean he is a 'blue blood' showing that he does no hard labour - it could be used for picking and scratching as well not sure though, among westerners it means you are a coke head or dealer. it could mean financial luck.
Now that's the way you're supposed to do it! I'm glad after all this time. They were able to keep some of their old traditions! This makes me happy! :-)
@FiestyCat Yes, it is true. The hair is pulled very tightly and caked in wax. When their scalps itch, they use the pointed ends of their hair ornaments to scratch it, causing breakage to the roots and further damaging the hairline. In the old days, it was a badge of honour, but now many of them simply get it fixed through a simple operation.
It's beautiful! But it's really complicated! I used to have long hair but I can't stand to do my hair ready each day. It tooks me a lot of time! :( I've had my haircut - tomboy hairstyle - so it takes me 30s to get my hair ready. How fast it is? Really fast! Anyway, love this video. It teaches me a lot about working effectively~ :D
Oh my God!! no wonder why this hairstyle had to last 4 or 5 days, it's way too complicated to do it every single day (and maybe this is the reason why in the movie Memoirs of a Geisha didn't use it)
Вот же ни фига себе, потом месяц надо не мыться небось. Такое каждый день не поделаешь... И как с волос это смыть потом...Длинный ноготь на мизинце меня всегда вводит в недоумение...
I’m not being culturally stupid, just want to know….WTF is with his fingernails? Is he out of work if he breaks one. I understand the us, banjo players and some guitarists do it, but there are picks you can wear. And most do
espectacular... y ni una horquilla. Yo ya hubiera puesto tres mil pinzas y tres mil horquillas... XDDD. Curioso porque los maikos o ssuelen hacer los hombres peluqueros y no las peluqueras....
Even if it s artificial, what the problem ? At every epoch, women, men and artists used artifices in clothing, hairstyle, make up (and so on..) to have the result they expected ! And Japanese people are the best i think about making look good and real what is in fact, fake and banal, for example they have tons of smart tricks used in Kabuki and the result is just sublime, if you know what i mean.
If you would like to know where to find everything on how too get the makeup and hair correct, go to ebay and look for hannari-ya is the seller. They have everything from bathing items to makeup, to the little book and dvd that even shows you how to do all of this. :) Good luck. Okibari yasu minnahan.
How do I find part 2 ? I wanted to see the finished look. Please put part 2 up on youtube soon Thank You. I am going to subscribe and click the bell so I will not miss the part 2.
Rei Lea You really think this guy has zero talent? Interesting. Typically these hairdressers have been passed down through generations these teachings using traditional methods through their family member. I heard the wire is still used because they must keep these hairstyles maintained until the next visit with the hairdresser, so they have to hold these styles for awhile. Just curious if you believe the hairspray won’t flake or lose strength after a week and think they should use hairspray instead of the bintsuke-abura. Too bad we didn’t get to see the 2nd half where they add in all of the intricacies.
That is the most off the cuff, unthought out comment made. Her hair is not being lacquered for an evening, it's being sculpted for a week. Throwing chisels at a block of Cararra marble will not give you David. It will give you chipped marble. Give an artist their due.
