In this video I explore water glass and how to make it. A small warning though this project requires you make 18 molar sodium hydroxide, which is really really strong. Water glass also known as sodium silicate has a really cool history and making it is really easy with the right tools.

I've been going too deep into YT chemistry. Never though i'd find one who's videos go anywhere from sealing ampoules, to making edibles. Livin' the life.

I definitely love a variety of projects. Most recently I’ve been working with algae to make an air purifier haha

Didn't mention that an aqueous solution of that pH is also etching the glass (amorphous solid silicate) flask as well as dissolving the added silica gel powder.

This is very true. I used a generally small piece of glassware because of this. But I didn’t mention it

Can you replace Silica Gel by Quartz power?

Yes, but you'd use molten NaOH rather than an aqueous solution and a stainless steel container instead of glass.

Can a microwave be used for heating this reaction? How would using KOH as a base change things?

Microwave definitely can be used to heat up. Though you are less able to control the reaction since microwaves heat things up in “hot spots”. KOH would work as well

Can potassium hydroxide be used in place of the sodium hydroxide?
