First serious testing of the freshly rebuilt spindle. Part 2 to come and it has a happier ending :-)!
Very happy with the lathe! Accurate, easy to use and strong for it's size!
Not so happy with my operating. Got to learn something by the hard way again!

Awesome Lathe. Well worth the effort put into fixing it up. Welcome to my world with those glasses. I tried leaving several pair strategically placed around the work area, then found I was looking for more than one pair of lost glasses. I now have a full face visor, its much easier to find. Cheers Eric

Haha :-D! I also try to stock multiple tools and other important items to make chances of running into one better, but it seems to work with me neither!

I've never used Mircona myself, but I understand that they make one of the best large-diameter boring systems in the industry.

There's quite the tail stock on that lathe That's a pretty good indicator that she's ready for some "action". I like the front way cover too. Very nice.

Priorities: You need to fix your heating arrangement and build a proper heater. Waste oil from cars can be filtered and burned efficiently/cleanly. Also, wood is alkali and corrodes your saw blade.

There are two schools of thought on crossfeed screws. One says the amount you dial in should be the amount the tool advances. The other school of thought says the amount you dial in should be the amount taken off the diameter. Obviously one is half the other. My lathe happens to be of the first school. But I am aware of the other one. So if I ever get another (and I have my brain handy that day) I must put in a DTI and figure out which it is. Otherwise, it's a mistake you only make once!

You are really pushing your luck with that job in the chuck mate. You really need to be in a much bigger one,the jaws are only gripping by a thread or two. I have seen jaws fail like this due to the stress loads being supported by half the jaws thread. If that lump catches and breaks loose it's going to be nasty! Between centres would be way safer and preferable in my book.

I wish they would had kept the machine shop warm during the winter where I last worked. We had several lost-time equipment failures related to temperature!
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
What kind of problems did the cold temp cause? How cold was there?
@douro20
@douro20 9 лет назад
sunppaa I can tell you the costliest one was with a CNC lathe used for production work, and it happened more than once! A failure in a seal in the turret caused coolant to leak into the hydraulic circuit. It took almost an entire week to get the lathe going the first time it happened. As for temperatures, they were well below freezing.
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
douro20 Ouch... Maybe it is a good investement to keep the shop warm compared to that other option!

You should put some thought into converting your fire place into a waste oil burner. Much easier than cutting wood..... Nice work you have done there and congrats on the new lathe... ATB Matt

Thanks! I've been thinking about that too! I got some good idea for that on my Latvian trips. When I have the most critical things ready, I will put some effort on an oil burner!

Love your videos! It was nice to see your face for a change. Happy you found your glasses! New lathe, new challenges. Is your cross slide direct read (one mm = one mm removed) or do you have to divide by two all the time (one mm takes of two mm)? Super lathe you now have. You should be very happy with it cutting like that. Amazing. And, I enjoyed the outdoor shots. We have been walking on snow for almost two months now so seeing green was a treat. We don't have trees in Greenland so seeing trees was also a treat. Thanks for sharing.
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
Thank you!! I wish we had snow too! It's not a direct read, so one mill removes two off diameter. No problem with that but I messed up in the beginning and after that thought a full turn was 2/4mm and not 3/6. Took me until the ond of the vid to figure that out even though my bells should have been ringing much before that.

Yeah. For its size capability this is a mighty powerful and robust lathe. Also its dead accurate!

I'll have to buy me a strong metric lathe someday. The perfect three for me would be: A hardringe toolroom dovetail lathe (super precision); some sort of medium swing, but strong metric lathe; and a very large, very heavy duty old Monarch for the big work. One can dream!

It was 30oC here today, but where I used to live till I retired was 47oC and they are expecting a week of it. Horrible and wearing full PPE for cutting or welding in that you are lucky to get 4 hours work a day out of anyone, too dangerous otherwise.

Nice lathe Sunppaa. Take care of swarf between the toolpost and the compound, I saw some.
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 8 лет назад
+Jan Visser I actually remachined the bottom of the tool post because of warping. It's now sitting on the indexing tooth and the whole base of the toolpost will not touch the compund. Thats why chips can get under there but the post is not sitting on the chips.

Your lathe does quite well, I'd be happy with it too! Glasses like sneaking into the deeply hidden realms, to see how long they can trick us. Sometimes they get very creative! I kind of thought that cut looked a little deep... Do you have enough material to make both hubs? Good luck! ;o) O,,,
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
Yeah, glasses like sneaking! Among with calipers and the most needed wrenches. I have another piece like this waiting. The rough hub is now being test-fit and I will finish it next week and also make the other hub similar to it. The part that I messed up will most probably be faced off anyways to get the rim closer. The idea was to make the hub wide enough at first so the 15" rim would fit (not touching the large Brembo 4-pot caliper) for sure, and then bring it closer. I will edit the second part today or tomorrow, it will actaully have some success in it..

oh man, the part with the glasses was funny - I thought you had them on and didn't realized (did that a few times) but on top of your head was even better. Lathe sounds and works great, beautiful machine. so how much is a full turn? 2.5mm/side?
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
Happens to me quite often, but it took longer than usual this time because I had my hat on so it could not feel the glasses on my head :-). Full turn is 3mm/side and 6mm off diameter.
@sharpx777
@sharpx777 9 лет назад
that's quite a cut. how big is the motor? (HP or kW i mean, not size)
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
sharp x 3kW 1400rpm. 2,4mm (4,8mm off diameter) was the biggest cut it would take. A full turn of 3mm makes it stall. I just first though I took a full turn with success but I actually only took 2/3 of a turn. After that I still thought a full turn was 2mm and wondered why it would not take a full turn anymore :-).
@carryitaround
@carryitaround 9 лет назад
how did you face the jaws? are they hardened?
@sunppaa
@sunppaa 9 лет назад
I tightened a piece in the jaws "inner notch" so that I was able to face the outer part. Jaws are hardened but a carbide tool with slow rpm can cut them.
