Making wood thread taps

A simple way to make thread taps from bolts of screws using an angle grinder.
woodgears.ca/th...
To address some hostile comments:
Don't have the tools to make one? For less than the cost of one "wood whisperer thread tap" you can buy an angle grinder and make one, assuming you already have a saw, a drill, and a piece of wood and a screw.
But people have been using metal taps on wood for ages, I'm trying to counter the recent idea that you need extra special expensive taps for wood. Keep woodworking accessible.
But if this video bothers you, please unsubscribe from my channel. I'm not there to please you, and I won't miss you. Cause I like it edgy :)

nice! if the tapped hole is tight, run the tap through again with a toothpick or similar in one of the flutes. maybe in a couple of flutes. It should push the tap off center and cut the threads a smidge larger. also, I recommend using really thick sulfur based cutting oil. especially in light colored, nearly finished, expensive wood. :) keep'em coming MW!

Okay I see a lot of negative comments towards Marc (and no I did not buy his tap set, I use my old metal tap set for wood). Andy Kline came up with a great idea to help those who need fast accurate tapped holes in wood which was repeatable and cuts the work time down by serious amounts. With that being said, Matthias is just showing another option rather than buying an actual tap set, there are pros and cons to both sides of this coin but let us respect the actual creators of these ideas, Marc is just the middle man on that tap set Andy Kline is the creator and major investor on that deal. Matthias just has a great idea for those of us who are too poor to afford those luxury items because even in a pinch, I have just threaded a bolt in a hole and just backed it out and went further in several times when needed. So thank you Matthias for showing me a new way to do the same thing I already do with bolts and screws I have on hand :)

The great thing about this is you can make the exact size threads you need. When you buy a kit, you'll usually get most sizes but not all size in every thread and for some reason you'll always end up needing a size that wasn't in your kit.

I make mine with 2 large flutes. For wood this allows plenty of room for wood particles.
@gyssedk
@gyssedk 7 лет назад
I just had the thought that you might be able to reinforce the threads in the wood by using a thin epoxy, like laminating epoxy. Brush some on to the threads and thread a bolt in to it and remove it before the epoxy sets. If it is thin enough it should soak in to the wood fibers and make the thread more durable. Just make sure it does not pool inside the threads, and the bolt should thread in to it nicely when the epoxy sets. To take it to a higher level, you could mix powdered graphite or molybdenum disulfide in to the epoxy, and it should add som lubricity to the mixture. Moglice, an epoxy product for renovating machine ways is basically epoxy mixed with molybdenum disulfide. Maybe it would help, maybe not, but i would try it out.
@aserta
@aserta 7 лет назад
For wood, only three flutes are necessary. And the actual cutting bit can be as thin as 1.2 mm. There's an article about it in that cool magazine, from many moons ago. Modern Mechanix.

The difference between this method and a store bought variant is the steel. Commercial taps are a hard steel, while screws are softer. I have used a similar method in a pinch to tap some holes in Aluminum. You can cut the flutes with a file or a hacksaw blade
@ChristopherChisolm
@ChristopherChisolm 7 лет назад
One reason you would want a harder steel, is the same in a knife or a chisel. The tool will hold a better edge. The steel bolts are made of are ductile, where as by comparison tool steels are more brittle, but tool steel is much stronger and tougher. So long story short without going into miles of detail, a proper commercially made tap should last much longer than one made from a bolt, when properly used. Sure you can just make another tap or touch up the edge when it wears out, but we are talking about at tap, realistically not absurdly expensive. It is just another way of doing something, more than one way to get a similar result.

I meant, glued tenon vs tapped hole on a pull test for example. Maybe shear isn't the proper word. But you know, test how strong are the threads, how much could a bolt on tapped wood actually hold, etc.

what caught my attention is , you want to make adjusment knobs without using the steel threaded woodinsert, right? but the fine thread inside the insert gives much finer adjustment than the rough "woodthreaded" screws ... so this might work better but will it give you the same range of adjustment?

It depends on how coarse or fine you want the adjustment

I've done this just making one or two smallish flutes with a triangular file, my thinking being that the threads will be stronger if they're more compressed into the wood rather than cut into the wood.

does tapping threads for a wood screw make it last any longer or make it any stronger?

In itself, no. But you can use a smaller pilot hole for more thread engagement (which adds strength), or you could put a bigger screw in a smaller piece of wood without splitting it (also adding strength)

Thanks for sharing the technique but I think the main benefit is that you can make a tap for any screw/bolt if you had all the tools you used and not that it's just cheaper that what The Wood Whisperer sells (BTW - you forgot the bench grinder cost in your overhead argument) .

@superdau

I don't think it's needed. I tried stripping the threads (for an M8 screw) in wood. I used a cylinder head screw for that and it always pulled the head of the screw into the wood instead of ripping out.

Everbuild do a wood hardener resin which I prefer. It's very thin and soaks into the wood. It's marketed for repair jobs where you dig out the rotten wood and need to ensure that you've not got any soft bits before you do your main resin repair. I've used it to harden a pine coffee table that was always getting dinked by the children, worked wonderfully.

Would this method work for tapping metal? Specifically I know of a few old hollow metal doors that I have repaired that have had odd sized screws for the old hardware. I would like to reuse these screws but in previous experiences I have had to replace them due to not having the correct tap.
@Helveteshit
@Helveteshit 7 лет назад
Probably not. There is already self tapping metal screws so there is no need to unless you are doing precision work with Mx screws or similar Fine threaded screws. And even then, you need a strong metal which most screws aren't made of. Hence there is a cost difference usually. It is a bit like nails, a cheap nail usually bends easier than an expensive nail that strikes true into even harder wood types. So, I would say, it MIGHT work for metal but you are probably better off, using it for wooden types than metal. Plus, self tapping screws for metal aren't really expensive. For reference, a self tapping metal screw can go through a H beam with a 1 cm width(Inch ~ 2.54 cm ). The limiting factor is usually the drill than the screw.
@Tomazack
@Tomazack 7 лет назад
Steel doors would be pretty hard to tap with a screw, but you can get away with doing this on aluminium doors.
@Helveteshit
@Helveteshit 7 лет назад
H beams are steel. So there exist self tapping screws for metal usage. Take a short, very short screw as a starter then switch to longer one. Easy peasy.

The screw I used wasn't self tapping
@OU81TWO
@OU81TWO 7 лет назад
I didn't mean "self tapping screw" in the sense where there are interruptions in the thread to provide the cutting action. I meant that you typically don't tap threads for standard wood screws and lag bolts. Drill the pilot hole and drive it in. The screws themselves will make their own threads...self tapping. All woods screws are in essence self tapping whether they are labelled that or not. It would be interesting to see which "cuts" a better thread. Your woodscrew tap or that lag bolt by itself assuming you drill the correct pilot hole. My gut tells me the lag bolt will make a smoother thread.
@OU81TWO
@OU81TWO 7 лет назад
+Ralph Macchiato No I got that. I just don't see a practical application. You typically want a thread to lock and stay tight after you've tightened it (knobs,leveling, position adjusting, etc). Woods screws have a relatively high pitch which makes them the worst thing for self holding a load if they are not restrained from rotation. You would need some kind of jam nut to lock it but they don't make those for wood screws so here comes the can of worms...

The reason for that comercial bolt being loose on the nut is because it is the lowest quality being 1 of three number three has the tightest tolerance threads and therefore has no slop from side to side, also when you try to spin it it will not turn freely more than a couple of turns! If you want more info about this it is all in the machinist handbook.

This video is an object lesson to RU-vid how-toers. The vast majority of them feel obliged to give 2-5 minute preambles explaining what they're eventually going to talk about and offering several scenarios wherein people might find use of the information they plan on getting to. Very few seem to realize that they're making a video: most of what they're showing doesn't need much if any explanation. And the parts that do, they usually either skip, or barely discuss.
