Awesome devlog again! Really enjoying this series. The new backgrounds definitely fit with your minimalist style :) Maybe you could even make the background particles a bit smaller so they’re a bit more subtle, looks great either way though!
Thanks so much, Codeer! I think playing around with the particles would be an excellent idea :) I guess this was more of an experimenting phase, and now I can just tweak the finer details ^^
I really like the art direction you're going, but I think you should change the black parts of the tiles to be much more mild, since the backgrounds are already leaning in that direction. It makes the art from background to foreground feel kinda inconsistent just due to how much the attention is being grabbed to the black here. I should have my eyes on the player, not the lump of black under the floor. TBH, I think a really easy fix would just be to tint the black(and lighten it a bit) depending on the current background. With the orange background, it could be like a burnt umber; for purple, you could have a desaturated grape color, etc.
Oh heyyy, this is actually a big brain move. What you’re saying here makes a lot of sense - thank you for your comment! I’ll do some experimenting soon with those colour changes, and I think that could really bring a lot to it!
Dang I really digged the backgrounds you made that you ended up removing. Completely understand your point with it not being minimalistic enough though. Sometimes those decisions can be tough, but in the end I think you made the right call which keeps the art style similar to the one it already has!
ok so i just had the biggest relief reading your comment 😅😅 I'm glad you understand where I'm coming from with these changes. I wish my game could suit the aesthetic of the backgrounds I made at the beginning, but like you said, they were just not minimalistic enough :p Thank you for your incredible support! :D
Great devlog. I also really struggle with making good art for games, maybe I should also get a little bit more minimalistic. As they always say, less is more! I really like the worlds, especially the cacti in the desert look really cool and make the level more interesting, even though it's just a background :-)
Thanks for checking out the video, Emerald! I always love coming back to minimalistic and simple art - even though it may not be as impressive as other art forms, it’s still really fun to make! ^^
The new backgrounds look fantastic! It was a great choice to go with these instead😁 I do think the particles might be a little too big, perhaps. Maybe making them smaller or adding some kind of blur could help. Either way, great job!
Ayyy, always glad to see you drop by these devlog videos! I'm glad you like the new designs, hehe! ^^ Funnily enough, I've already made the particles a little smaller xD They're a bit less intrusive now and I'm thinking it's looking a lot better. Thank you for your super nice comment and support as always! :D
Great video as always icosowo! I really like the final backgrounds so keep it up! 😄 Just one thing though, I feel like the red background was a littttttle dark (has sort of a black tint to it) idk if its intentional or if my eyes are broken though 😋
Thank you so much, my devvie boi! Funnily enough, I thought so too xD I think the video render might have done a bit with it, but I went back into unity, and made it a little lighter. Thanks for picking it up, haha! ^^
The minimalist style is definitely worth keeping hold of. Given that it's a chill kind of game, what incentive is there to progress? More interesting puzzles or landscapes?
Thank you! I really appreciate that, haha :) I think the main incentive to play more is the sense of completion. There are going to be lots of 'mini-worlds,' and so it won't be a massive effort to commit to completing one, and then maybe another after that, and maybe just ooone more. I think you see where I'm going here :P
I was gonna comment about the new different world backgrounds ,but then a plot twist happened (you got rid of them all T-T) . So, now I'm gonna talk about the simple new version 2.0 backgrounds. The new backgrounds are cool. Although I really liked the detailed ones ,I can understand why you wanted simpler ones as the game is supposed to be chill ,and relaxing. Anyways nice devlog as always Icrocodileso (I think its obvious that I'm running out of nick names.)
Awesome Video and Glad that Minima is still going strong! Also, With putting 'Shadow' effects on an object or level us a 'Point' where you image a light source is coming from, and draw the shadows relative to that light source, makes for some really cool designs I've found from doing my own art and drawings. (Also, I love those backgrounds mate, especially the green one)
nicholas nuuuu my mannnn I tried doing some of those shading techniques, but I found it got in the way too much :/ I might add an option to turn on them shadows at some point, tho :)
In my opinion, the new backgrounds look so much better, but I feel as if they are lacking a certain amount of depth as the other backgrounds. Maybe you could somehow add parallax to it.
Yeah, I definitely feel ya. I've been experimenting with breaking up the background into two portions and then adding parallax to that. Trying not to go overboard with the detail, but it's definitely coming together! :)
Your videos and game are getting better and better. Keep it up I really enjoy your devlogs lately :) But I have to say I like the old backgrounds more than the new ones.
Nice work, I did think the old backgrounds (well the version 1 of this video) worked quite well and felt relaxing, but mate the new ones are perfect! Reallyl like what you've done with them! Excellent work!
