Making Your own SEGA MegaDrive Cartridge

In this video I will show you how to assemble your own SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis cartridge, using an erasable programmable ROM chip, a so called EPROM. Those can be had for relatively small money, used on eBay, for example. You also need an adapter for the popular TL866II+ programmer, to be able to read and write EPROMs up to 32 Megabits (4 Megabyte) in size. This can be used to make your own repro cartridges of rare games, homebrew or demoscene productions.

Great video! Gotta try this myself. Note: gsed doesn't appear to be installed on Ubuntu, but an alternate way to quickly create your 0xFF pad file without gsed with plain bash is: for i in {1..248022}; do printf '\xff' >> ff.bin; done

Oh, very nice. There are lots of ways to achieve the same goal! I think ubuntu simply calls it sed, by the way. Should be gsed inside.

@@root42 Sed's definitely installed; I've been using it on Linux for 20 years. This is literally the first time I've heard of it referred to as 'gsed'. I guess that's a thing Mac users invented to distinguish our sed from their original bsd-variant. TIL!
@root42
@root42 2 года назад
@@3vi1J Yeah, the BSD and original UNIX sed have a more limited feature set. GNU sed is greatly enhanced. Since Linux is mostly GNU/Linux it comes with all GNU tools by default. But luckily you can simply install GNU tools on macOS as well!

Great video, well explained. Thank you for making the pcb available for free. Do you own SuperNintendo's Gerber?

I wonder if there are some developers who develop cartridges using microcontroller, such as rp2040. Using this chip to increase the data memory capacity, save data and reduce the production cost.
@root42
@root42 Год назад
There are SD card and flash based cartridges, which are good for developing games and/or for homebrew. I think an rp2040 might make sense, IIRC there is someone making an N64 cartridge using that.

@kurniawanwidisusanto3619 Год назад
@@root42 yes sir, but isnt rp2040 cost less than any of those? I hope the chip with 16mb serial flash memory could help the developers create games easier and cheaper

That seems to have a very different pinout. I think you need to build a different adapter for that.

That board you are using from Germany is not beveled and will likely ruin the cart pins in the console. You will have to chamfer them.

If people weren’t so greedy I could have my old games again like when I was a kid. But I refuse to pay 20 to 40€ for an old game. It’s not worth even 5€ per game.
