If I were you, I would start off small. Get the router bits and carbide burrs for the Dremel and also some sanding drums for it. Keep everything as cheap as you can and use the 0.75" x 1.5" stock you have to practice and learn how to use the various bits and attachments. 1.5" is a little too narrow for relief carving, but you could glue and clamp two pieces togeather and make it 3". You will need a dust mask too. If you spend some time practicing and are sure that you want to move onto bigger projects, then I would buy more equipment to facilitate that. Chainsaws are very dangerous! I had a very lucky escape a few years ago when a kick back resulted in me chainsawing the right hand side of my head. An angle grinder with a Kutzall disk will remove stock quickly, but this is also a dangerous tool. Smaller is safer and you will soon find out that even small tools can be hard to control in many situations. Of course, you must decide how to proceed for yourself. There are some great videos out there of power carving projects. I often download line art and use that as a pattern for practicing. :-)

@@RussellPlatten I'm going to take your advice; it sounds wise. One more question. I saw some inexpensive 1/4" bits, that are for lower speed drills, that have spikes all over & resemble the kutzall. Do you have any experience with those? ; e.g. DEWALT DWA4970 Steel 1/2" Hp Cylinder Rotary Rasp File . It sounds safer, at lower speed, & is only $3.78 on Az

@@RussellPlatten I think the only thing I would really want a chain saw for is to harvest pieces of wood after storms, to cut off a chunk from a larger piece that I could not otherwise use/ carry. This seems the best route to quickly achieve this task??? even though i HATE the idea of a chain saw. I was thinking like a Black & Decker cordless. I like the idea of the symbolism of using storm wood to create a work of art from it (and live across the street from a park where there are huge chunks of wood after every storm); but I need to learn my woods better first (beyond fairly limited current knowledge), so I know what I am harvesting :)

@@RussellPlatten I am sure I am going the right direction doing some building with the massive amount of wood I have gathered. (massive to me anyways; it is taking over the small areas I have available). I pray about everything, & had idea to use freeform wood constructions in my art/ paintings, & prayed for guidance. When I read a daily Word (in a Bible based life application teaching book), to my amazement, it spoke of the dude from star wars (I don't know stars that well), who played hans solo. At first, he was a failed actor, & took up the craft of woodworking, & building things. Since this has happened with perfect answers to prayer for 20 years, I am sure this was no coincidence, right when praying about my art. I may not do this forever, for ALL my art though, so your advice is wise, to limit what tools I buy. I am excited to get started. I am going to order those items you suggest to start. Thanks.

There are a lot of bits to choose from Dimitry and you can pick them up fairly cheaply. Have a look at the bits on Amazon, you will be able to see what is available. :-)

It will work on aluminium Philip, but the bits may clog and require clearing. :-)

@@RussellPlatten I ended up buying one after watching this, picked it up yesterday. I’m pretty impressed with it actually, a lot bigger than what I was expecting it to be, I got it to replace my £20 dremmel rip off. I use it mainly on metal to prep for welding or to finish after welding, so far so good!

They are a tight fit Joanne, but workable. Just remove the cap and collet from the die grinder. Slide the Kutzall bit through the cap and into the collet and then place the collet back into the die grinder and tighten the cap. :-)

No, it only has a 6mm collet. The 3mm Dremel bits would snap if used with this die grinder. :-)

@@RussellPlatten Makita have a 3mm collet which fits inside the 6mm one. At least in my die grinder GD0601.

@@hazelliddle229 Thank you for that information Hazel. It is worth knowing. I think I will stick to 1/4" bits as I have already snapped a 1/8" Kutzall bit in my Dremel by being too aggressive! :-)
