Our top compact impacts as listed here: www.amazon.com/shop/torquetes... Where to find our tool rankings: torquetestchannel.etsy.com Today we test the newest Makita compact, which is a 40V MAX XGT variant, their GWT04Z. It has the highest specs of any compact cordless on the market so we see if that shows up on the dyno, and maybe more importantly if that's worth it.

here in the Philippines that XGT model only cost around 175usd in todays conversion. there’s another XGT 1/2 model tw008g that has 780 N.m (560 ft.lbs) which cost 210usd in todays conversion. hmmmm i think you get to pay higher premium for imported products that’s why it is hard to sell makita in the US.

The problem with makita is their lack of tools compared to Milwaukee. 10 years ago when I started buying tools I went with Milwaukee instead of makita because makita just didn’t have the range of tools Milwaukee did. This has got to be a first. "But If you have the money" Normally that is what I hear when others speak of Milwaukee. I pretty much run Red and the majority of that is from their M12 Fuel line. Small, light and quite powerful. My very first battery powered tool was a Makita drill that had the battery pack that slid up into the handle. 25 years ago or more, maybe 30. Now days, to be honest, the top three brands are close enough that the average person could not tell much difference. I mean, 50 ft lbs when your into the mid to high 400s isn't noticeable unless whatever you are doing is at the extreme maximum of usable power. It boils down to which system offers the products you need most. That is where team Red does shine, they offer most everything. While I have you on the line, so to speak. I am looking at purchasing a new HD saw. Brand isn't my concern, well, kinda isn't. At Home Depot on line they have the Makita LXT 36V rear handle 7 1/4, two batteries, charger WITH a free tool for 249.00 I'm just wondering if it is their good saw and if it is a good deal? I'm going to my mom's to replace all the siding (T1-11) and trim on a 48×28 garage/shop. Each piece will need to be cut so it is alot of cutting. I just bought two Toughbuilt C700 sawhorses for a stable base to cut everything. Thank you.

Yeah, ‘F’ the XGT line. 😳 It is good for OPE, and big hammer drills and saws. That’s about it. Of course LXT is limited in battery Ah, due to Makita’s asinine reasoning, regarding going over 6 AH. Frankly, they dropped the ball, and I feel was he impetus going forward with this XGT line. A tech tried to tell me, you don't want a huge battery on an impact, and besides, our LXT line has the best charging system around. Something I'd like to see from these sorts of tools is some kind of comparison of battery life or management. Okay, so this one makes the most beans, but what if I would only get a couple really good pulls at that power level before the battery craps out? What if the second most powerful impact actually can keep that up all day and I happen to be a tire tech somewhere who will be zipping off lug after lug after lug? Especially with how nasty the battery pack prices are, limiting how many spare packs I could buy, I'd really like to know if one model manages it charge better than another over an hour of use.

I appreciate the value in the testing you are doing as well as the cost versus analysis BUT, as with all tools, there is a real world degradation/usage factor that needs to be addressed. If you pay the $250-$1000 price difference how does that translate to the life expectancy of the tool ( impact tools in particular)? Can you provide, and I know your team will probably hate the monotony of it, a 1000 use rating that will actually demonstrate the "quality/price" ratio from no name to top shelf? The ultimate torture test going from max torque (per device rating) removal and then install. Basically, if the tool says it will max 500ft/lbs what happens after 1000 uses. How badly does the 500 degrade OR will the tool make 1000 uses. Just a thought but I think a necessary comparison.

I have this impact and I've also put it through a Industrial construction life test since it's release. Some Likes: Size; features; feel during use; power and battery charge time. Some dislikes: Plastic nose cone is horrible and will fall off once the tool heats up. It's a horrible design so just remove it or it will remove itself. This tool has taken everything you could image and still works great. The Battery casing and button could be made more durable as they don't seem as well made as my DeWalts and Milwaukees. Maybe by having such a faster charge time, which translates to needing less batteries also means more use cycles and more use/abuse cycles. I have several XGT tools and I would buy this tool again. What i don't get is their price separation depending on where you live. More than 50% difference between the bare tools where i live. XGT batteries are over three times as expensive as their LXT offerings here. I know you are purely testing beans which i love. I'd still love to see a bare tool and two batterys in the chart as part of the price calculation. In this case, makita is putting a serious inflation on their XGT line here. I kid you not, this XGT and one 4ah battery is $900 plus change here.

XGT might rarely go on sale, but Makita and many of their dealers have started doing their typical deals of buy X tool or kit, get Y Battery/Z Bare tool free. Local dealer here is doing a BOGO where if you buy the XGT 7 1/4" rear handle kit, you get a 4Ah batt free as well as your choice of the compact impact, single speed 5" angle grinder, or blower. It's how I got my GWT05. Just gotta be patient to see if the tools that make less sense become 'freebie' incentives in deals to hammer home that initial buy. Acme's also doing some deals. Buy certain XGT kits (mostly saws), get a 4Ah batt free. Or Buy 2 qualifying bare tools, get a 4Ah batt free.

If you're in Makita 40v for your big tools and you want to spend less on small tools then I think m12 would be the way to go since m12 has just about everything and the tools are tiny. If you're not in any platform yet it's pretty hard to argue against DeWalt since with just a couple of powerstack and a pair of flexvolt batteries you can power everything from fairly small subcompacts up to big chainsaws and other outdoor power equipment. I've been a long time tti fan since one+ has kept the battery the same forever preserving value but if you're starting fresh today DeWalt is a compelling story I just wish they didn't charge so much $/Wh for the batteries.

I know the 921 is supposed to be compact and all but for the sake of the ugga duggas you should equip it with the XR-6AH battery that you used on the 891 battery comparison test. My 923 came with two powerstacks. I went out of my way to get one 5AH because I heard it was the sweet middle ground for power to weight ratio. BUT ever since i witnessed the 6AH on the 891 (which I am waiting to get) I’m convinced to get just one 6AH as well to ad to my arsenal. I’m anxiously waiting on Dewalt to up the 5AH from 18500s to 21700s or produce a powerstack equivalent.

IMHO the sweet spot on DeWalt batteries is the 4Ah one with 21700 cells. It's light, compact and provides more power than the XR 5Ah. Is just me or is any 4 in long stubby 1/2 in air impact barely able to fit onto almost any bolt on a mid size car except for a few suspension and exhaust bolts and if it can fit it is usually too over or under powered to be effective and worth fitting into that spot. How on earth will anyone find a use for a use for these bigger battery powered tools, half the time you need an extension or a swivel socket and they rob all the power that these battery powered things don’t produce.
