This was shot out of Ocean City, MD on the 4th of July on the Pumpin Hard. We were trolling between 6 and 7knots. Also we were using a Gopro HD Hero 3 black on the 720 120fps setting
Great Whites are evolved Mako Sharks both the Mako Shark and Great White originate from a older variant of the Mako shark millions of years ago. It would make sense they would have similarities difference is what they preyed upon. The White Shark hunts large fish and Seals thus requires the muscles and mass to take on such prey. Interestingly White Shark pups do actively compete with Mako Sharks due to similar teeth designs until they get older and require nutrient rich seals. T
@@ophelia_5235 They don't, their teeth are designed to grab slippery fish, not to tear flesh. You might be thinking of another species, perhaps the bull shark
Ever see what a dog looks like when it wants to eat or attack something for defense or play. Sure looks cute until it opens its mouth and all those teeth show, and remember children play with dogs. Kinda makes you think..
eaglerocks123 children almost never get attacked by dogs. They have cub-protection. And dogs are domesticated animals, they don't attack unless threatened or scared. Of course there are always exceptions.. but it's way riskier putting your baby in your car than letting it play with a dog
@@MisterK9739 Thousands of babies and children have been eaten by their own families dogs. You just have no idea what is going on in the beasts head. I know these attacks are rare, but putting a totally defenseless and innocent child next to such a strong beast that could easily kill a fully grown male is a crime. Im talking talking about little rat dogs of course.
@@Quetzalcoatl_Feathered_Serpent the difference is that dogs have been tamed whilst sharks are not tameable well actually some are but it's very hard and very rare to tame a shark.
It is awesome how he fades away into the shadows but as soon as he devours his meal, it's back full throttle and you can see this magnificent beast again emerging from the dark.
My all time favorite species of shark, and yet it terrifies me. Is is simultaneously beautiful and deadly. A fast, streamlined, efficient predator with one of the "coldest" stares an animal could give you. And yet, it amazes with its natural prowess.
That was badass. Can’t get over how he kept coming back, again and again, and just how fast he got back up there every time. Def put a hurting on your lures.
I think you are a environmental criminal, like the guy who made this video. So clueless. You think it's ok to just burn up the energy of an apex predator in the wild, just so some punk can try to profit from it on RU-vid. You should be reported.
JETZcorp It wouldn't make sense such small predator to travel alone and especially when it's built perfectly to hunt in packs. It's not proven but it's most likely that they traveled and hunted in packs.
There are plenty of small predators which don't hunt in packs. Cats, birds of prey, wolverines, monitor lizards, etc. There were plenty of dinosaurs the size of a goat or less, plus all the small mammals which were emerging. If feral house cats can collapse whole food chains as solitary hunters, solitary velociraptors ought to do fine. But of course, pack hunting is bad-ass to visualize, and it is still very plausible.
@@deandredunbar9618 most sharks have developed a special membrane that protects it's eyes from flailing prey. It's most prominent in great whites, watch any close up of them biting down on something and you'll see the white membrane.
The Shortfin Mako can swim up to 60mph (52 knots). This was no challenge for the most impressive, prolific swimmer in the ocean!! Awesome footage! Thanks for sharing!!
IDABAYAREA650I the ocean is probably way worse with Bull sharks and Tiger sharks, water snakes, sea urchins, jellyfish, etc. In fact the most venomous creature is the box jellyfish which can kill a man in minutes. Edit: I forgot to mention crocodiles and alligators, even though theyre semi-aquatic they're slow on land. :/
No idea how fast this boat is, but I've had a Shortfin Mako stripping my dredge bait at ~26 knots. Official sources say these have top speed of ~21 knots. I believe they are even faster as it didn't even struggle with 26. If they can feed regularly on tuna, they're most likely just as fast.
He was enjoying every second of it. Probably the most fun he ever had. He used strategy, and attacked from the side as much as he could. Very cool video.
did you see those fucking teeth, right before he bites he has his mouth shut but right as he bites he opens and loses a little speed. that's why they're faster swimmers. this one doesn't look very big but god damn he's a fast little shit
I'd really love to see an unedited version as a companion to this. Can't get a real appreciation for how fast the shark is when slow motion comes in so obtrusively. I get that seeing all that's going on is cool, but at the same time, being able to enjoy the beauty of the thing swimming at full speed is something I'd love to see.
Dear Davey, I am a lecturer in the Uk and wanted to ask of I could use your video in my shark lectures? It is such an amazing illustration of how fast these Makos can swim!
Damn....I tell you what...that Mako sure earned his keep....catching up with the dredge like that. Jeez he's fast and coordinated like hell. Awesome video, man
An amazing shark. We have to protect the marko sharks, because now there aren't many of them on our earth any more. So please save the last mako sharks and protect their habitats! It's also very necessary for us!
Excellent, far better than all the vids were everyone screams and whoops like idiots. Actually seeing the shark prepping itself jaws gaping and actually being able to see through the gills then take its prey. Good Video.
Bro...it ain't trying to catch up...multiple times it boosted in for feed while at speed the whole way...super fast..super scary.. nothing you could do if in the water with it... cold eyed cold soulled devouring machine...reminds me of a chick I once dated..I'm lucky to be alive actually!
Those eyes fucking terrify me. The shark itself? No. What it's doing? Not at all. It's efficiency? More like admirable. Those fucking eyes make me cringe and look away in fear, though.
TieDyeBowtie "the thing about a shark is the eyes, it's got lifeless eyes, black ey like a dolls eyes. Doesn't seem to be livin until it rips you to pieces....... 🎶🎵Farewell and adieu to ye fair Spanish ladies ♩🎵" 😂😂😂
They’ve been chasing boats for centuries dude. When people threw food scraps and trash off of boats, hordes of blue sharks followed. When slaves jumped off ships, sharks followed. If you’re on a cruise ship there’s most likely at least one shark that trailed it for some time on your cruise
GREAT video! Thanks for posting -- such an interesting perspective! That's one smart shark, it took the bait while avoiding the hooks for the most part. You should send this in to some of the shark researchers, they'd probably love to see it!
Mako's wouldn't likely attack you. They feed on active fast moving prey like Tuna and other fast fish. The teeth they have is designed to grab not saw or tear. Indeed they would likely avoid you unless your the idiot trying to fish them, and in that case they may try to defend themselves. Great Whites are also the same as your not very appealing for a food item not enough fat and humans might be seen as dangerous. Tiger sharks on the other hand would likely love to take a bite and bullsharks, white tips and blue sharks are assholes and will likely attack you. Prey its the blue shark that does cause that's the one you can probably fight off. The other ones are too powerful and white tips hunt in packs.
A fast, intelligent and beautiful fish. While the great white shark has most of the limelight, the short fin mako shark is certainly a brilliant creature in its own right. On the subject of shark movies , I'm surprised that the mako hasn't featured in more of them apart from deep blue sea (1999). In a "killer shark movie" it would most definitely cause some scares probably equally as scary as the great sharks from the jaws movies (the 1st one and maybe the 2nd).
Great footage, is any of it in real time or is it all sped up/slowed down? The sped up parts are a bit distracting, would love to see this in real time to gauge the Mako's speed. Thanks for posting the trolling speed, that helps!
Thanks, Wow, that makes it even more awesome, thanks for the heads up. Awesome stuff you guys are doing there, we are only starting to learn about these animals capabilities and video like this is very helpful! Love to see a wahoo, swordfish or thresher do this!
All I can say is I hope he WAS NOT caught. Sharks are to be respected and admired, and PROTECTED! Makos are immensely special pelagics and this baby shows just how special they are!
Worked in Ocean City in 95. One of guys at work was a lifeguard (+his twin brother). Was at house party at their guys place, got drunk & one of the guy's girlfriends dropped me home. When I arrived home, I walked toward the beach & told her I was going swimming. I was in the water admiring the moonlight when I was yanked out by the two brothers. They warned me about the Mako sharks in the area that feed at night (they should Know) & told me I was lucky not to be attacked. Thank you guys!
That's odd. Mako sharks are usually deep water sharks (pelagic species). Rarely near the shore. Great whites, tigers and bull sharks feed close to the shore. Maybe something drawing them there.
This video makes me think of GOD and how amazing HE is.Look at the design of the mako shark. It catches up with the boat so easily and strikes with such accuracy.
I quite liked the music to be honest...It's like the Jaws theme...but humorous at times and adds a sort of comic relief to something that if you think about it carefully and imagine yourself as the bait is really dead serious...
No, its not. Its power personified. Nothing will stop it from getting what it needs, it moves with elegance, and doesn't give up. That's what I call beautiful.
Two questions please 1. I see you shot the footage at 120fps my editing software camtasia 9 won't handle 120 fps only 30, what software do you suggest that will handle 120fps? 2. was that real fish on the teaser and if so what type? You have no idea how many times I have sent this video to people that feel this is some of the most extraordinary underwater footage they has seen!
That is honestly amazing video footage of this incredible shark! I could be wrong but i think Mako's are the fastest shark in the world just behind the Sailfish Marlins but i ain't no Marine Biologist! Lol
This video reminds me of how my brother and I used to fish. We'd put a couple lines in the water and tow them about 60 feet back at 8 knots. We would always catch something after a couple minutes.
These are just teaser baits, no hooks! Game fishers/ rec anglers use them to attract the fish up in the hope they'll hit a top surface lure or another trawled bait which are usually trawled further back behind the teasers, whoever rigged these up has done an excellent job. Great footage mate, he was a greedy little Noah!
wow this is such amazing footage. Very interesting way to record shark behavior. The color of the water and the shark approaching was quite dramatic. Beautiful video.
Makos scare me more than Great Whites. They are one of the fastest fish in the sea. It was cute watching him catch up to the boat….they’re like torpedoes going through the water.
