Lets put it this way, even with connections and capital, i wouldn't be able to reach his level of sucess. If you read his book prehaps you would understand more on his upbringing.
I mean, he’s the official richest person in Malaysia. But with Tun Daim undeclared assets, he might be among the richest person in the world with over 100 billion usd.
Huh? He already sold his sugar business in Malaysia on Oct 2009. And four years later, the price control on sugar was lifted by Malaysian government. Soon after that, he used his company, Wilmar, to acquire Sucrogen Ltd, the largest producer of raw and refined sugar in Australia and New Zealand, at about 2.5 times its net asset value (NAV) of A$696.5 million in FY2010 ended March 31. The significant difference is that Sucrogen gives Kuok a global reach; MSM’s operations were generally confined to Malaysia. Next, he used Sucrogen to help Wilmar expand its market share in Indonesia by virtue of the geographical proximity between Australia and Indonesia. Sucrogen will also be able to capitalise on Wilmar’s extensive marketing & distribution network. It is no secret that Wilmar is eyeing the Indonesian market. As the company’s main emphasis now is to build a world-class sugar operation in Indonesia, which has a high sugar deficit of 41% and ample land. The other attraction is that sugar prices in Indonesia are higher than international rates.
As a Malaysian, I think people don't talk enough about how bad the Malaysia government was (and is). My father always used to tell us how the government put up so many laws against other races in Malaysia (favoring the Malays), so much so that Robert was forced to sell his business over. I don't know the specifics either but I believe people should bring up this side of the story as well, instead of just his success in the past.
I wouldn't go as far as to call all of the previous administration bad, we didn't end up as a country split in civil war or famine etc like some of our neighbours. If Malaysia is going to get out of the middle income trap, it has to start abolishing all its racial laws and focus fully on meritocracy. For that to happen, it needs awareness, political power and strong legislative push.
The question is. Would you trade your youth for his wealth? I bet none of you would, so it doesn’t really mean anything. After all, you can’t take it away with you…
He was a small potato while doing business in Malaysia , but then became prominent after moving he reposirioning himself to Hong Kong where he has domiciled for last thirty odd years.
I say, reading a single book isn’t a good source. I mean, let’s talk about the King of Thailand. Internal account and external account is complete 180 degree differences
Bumiputra won't let Malaysian chinese to get advance..so living in Singapore he s equally treated n banks in Singapore can loan him money much easier than in Malaysia. His sugar cane business is greatly traded in Singapore stock exchange ❤❤❤
@@kahtinnash1342True. His major businesses - Wilmar International and Shangri-La Group - are based in Singapore. He is not alone. The billionaire Ong Beng Seng and Anthony Tan (founder of Grab) also moved to Singapore.
Why's people complaining ? Does everyone have to start from zero ? No , i don't think so . We all start from different backgrounds. There's always someone poorer and richer than my family.
They were old money, benefitted from colonial times which placed them above the natives in social stratification, served as "middle men" for the colonial administration.
@@tipsy5883 Not racial failure. But a result of devastating, generational policy such as colonial social stratification which brought and put non-native ethnics such as Indian & Chinese above the occupied Natives. It's called "middleman theory". You can also see this present in Ottoman Turkey colonization for example, where Armenians were put as middleman between both muslim Turks colonizers/muslim natives (the converted natives, like Albanians & Bosnians) and the conquered nonmuslim natives (Ottoman's colonial subjects), so as result diaspora Armenians during that era were richer than average Lebanese or Balkan people but unlike the Chinese descendants in Southeast Asia who survived to modern times, diaspora Armenians were rounded up and subjected to Turkish great genocide in early 20th century because of the Ottoman Empire decline and the loss of WW1.
@@casioak1683Malaysia get their independence in 1957. There’s no middleman theory anymore when it’s already 2024 now. Wake up and stop giving excuses 😂😂
@@alexfengerson7982 Generational policy such like that took more than just few years. The colonial social stratification & middlemen practice lasted for more than 300 years.. to put it into analogy: those who already started with +5 achieve point +15 faster than those who started from 0, with same effort.
@@lionelproctor82 growing up in Malaysia and rarely heard a Chinese Malaysian speak FLUENT malay, most of them get good grade in spm but fail to speak properly eventho they born and grew up here. you don't have to know most of them to know that most are not fluent because whenever there's a Chinese Malaysian that are fluent, malay people are always "woahh, pandai cakap bm ehh,tak pelat pun" because it's a rare situation for them lol
@@Henry4th That is true for those Chinese who attended vernacular schools but not for those who attended national schools. Also, I live in Malacca, where there are a lot of Straits Chinese (Cina Peranakan) who speak Malay as their mother tongue. Anyway, just because they don't speak the national language fluently, it doesn't make them less patriotic. FYI, the national language of India 🇮🇳 is Hindi, but most people in the South can't speak it.
You cannot take it with you when you die So hopefully, he did some good with that and help a lot of people...... Is Is rich or poor you know where you go
He is not a Malaysian! He is living in luxury outside Malaysia and not staying in Malaysia or have any interest in the well being of the people of Malaysia. He only boasts about what he has and does for his own personal gain and agenda.
I read his book.. he did not start with a sugar refinery wtf 😂😭😂😭 He was a rice trader and worked his way up after british colonization. Don't spread bs and give him a bad name.
He is located in H K now after N Rajak plundered his sugar business. His shipping business MISC was also robbed by another ex Prime Minister of Malaysia whose children are billionaires.
Richest man in malaysia legally 😂, most of our politicians don't declare the assets which is why. Mahathir empire alone can beat these top 10 richest man in malaysia.
Contributing to the world's chronic disease problems (diabetes, high and bad blood cholesterol, cancer, etc.) by establishing a sugar empire is neither a well-intended endeavor nor a humble beginning.
He has the money in the first place. You wont set up a business without seed money unless in the Chinese Community they help fellow Chinese to start in business by lending money. Unlike the Malays in my country Philippines. Thats why FilChi has many businesses and few if you could find one an employee.
He got his business because a silver platter was handed to him by the government by monopoling the sugar business. Those days everybody put sugar inside their drinks and sometimes cooking. So he easily can make money from there.
It only really takes filling the pockets of crocodiles to have a monopoly, I knew this as my family were local contractors and they would basically give "gifts" like cars and a kickback whenever there's a bidding@@rob-6940
haha literally sent me LMAO. He build palm, sugar, rice, flour, bread and hotel industries. All of the industries were from ground up to monopoly because no one could compete with him. 5 of his industries were day light robbery from government because of so call New Economy. And now all 5 of the industries basically from golden goose of his hand to yearly loss of Malay hand hahahaha Always be the laughter among us.
No Robert Kouk didnt not built Shangrila Hotel..it Westin International Hotel (US hotel).Later on in the late 70s early80s Robert Kuok bought Shangrila from Westin International.Correction !❤❤❤
People anywhere in the world who live for money and worse, who worship money and wealth are never patriotic nor nationalistic with some exceptions, i.e. they hold political power. Nevertheless, their industrious character serves well for the state where they stay than state-pampered citizens.
many malaysians don't know the real facts about how this man got rich..it started with some ships donated by japan as ww2 compensation to malaysia and the malaysian government gave the ship to the chinese association out of sympathy with the many chinese who died due to anti sentiment China by Japan in Malaya..he was appointed as the chairman to manage ships to deliver trade and so on.. I know through my grandfather who still lives in Penang.
Robert sure is n are SUGAR DADDY but if mamak kutty madey daim zainudin pek mo taib n many more dumnos bapa sakau included , Robert maybe barely made the top 10
