There are few countries that I've visited that offer up such a diverse range of cuisine that can be found in Malaysia. Aside from Malay dishes, Malaysian food features Indian cuisine and Chinese cuisine with a local twist. Many of the dishes are fusion types of concoctions blending South Asian and Chinese influences with local Southeast Asian ingredients and spices. Whether you're in the mood for a spicy Laksa, delicious dim sum or tantalizing Tandoori chicken, you'll find it all here in Malaysia. The following is our travel food guide for dishes to try while visiting Malaysia:
GEAR WE USE
Olympus OM-D E-M5 II: amzn.to/1OchS7t
Canon G7X: amzn.to/1YdjsYX
Olympus 14-150mm II Lens: amzn.to/1Y79zeM

1) One can't leave Malaysia without trying a banana leaf Thali that includes rice, dal, vegetables, roti, papad, chutney and pickles. Indulge with utensils or eat like a local with your hand. In this travel video we visited a local restaurant in Malacca.
2) The breakfast of champions in Malaysia is hands down dim sum. You can get world class dim sum in cities such as Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and George Town (Penang) that rival eateries in Hong Kong. Eat bite sized snacks and sipping on Chinese tea is how I started most mornings in Malaysia.
3) One of the cheapest and best meals you can enjoy in Malaysia for breakfast, lunch, dinner or just a snack is Roti Canai. Nearby the Puduraya bus terminal we spotted a gem of a place. My favorite roti flat bread is 'Roti Pisang" meaning Roti with banana whereas Audrey's favorite is roti with cheese. Once again, indulge like a local by breaking bread with your hands and dipping it into curry sauce.
4) While visiting the bustling Jonker Street Night market in Malacca we stopped to sample Malaysia street food. First we cooled off with Cendol, a refreshing shaved ice dish with jellies, beans, coconut milk and cane syrup.
5) For best of Malaysian and Chinese cuisine we visited a Baba Nyonya restaurant to sample delicious local dishes including Nyonya Laksa, Rojak, Popiah and Nyonya Dumplings while cooling off with refreshing lime juice. What a feast!
6) For the best Indian food in Southeast Asia visit Kapitan restaurant for their Tandoori and garlic butter naan sets. They're simply the best. When available combine this dish with butter chicken, Alo Ghobi and/or Palak Paneer.
7) Given how hot and humid it is in Malaysia it's always Cendol time! This refreshing dessert consisting of shaved ice, coconut milk and various ingredients will no doubt help you beat the heat.
8) For amazing Chinese food we found a gem of a place in Georgetown called Tek Sen restaurant. Here we sampled Mapo Tofu and crispy chicken in a plum sauce.
Have you ever tried Malaysian cuisine before? What are some of your favorite foods in Malaysia? What did we miss on our list?
This is part of our Travel in Malaysia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Malay culture, Malay arts, Malay foods, Malay religion and Malay people.

Nice to see you are enjoying the food here in Malaysia. I'm Malaysian myself and it is great just seeing people from around the world savor our diverse cuisine. As for the "carrot cake", or more well known locally as "chai tow kway", one of the main ingredients is actually daikon, which is a kind of radish. So called as the Chinese Teochew pronunciations for 'carrot' and 'radish' are the same ('chai-tow'). You can see there are little cubes of cut radish cake in the dish. :)

Hi Sam & Audrey. First of all, I would like to thank you guys for making a great job in showcasing our Malaysian food to the world. I can tell you that food is our pride and your vlogs are a sure testament to that. Kudos to that! You and Sabrina make great partners and just love how you guys can be so casual, adventurous and not being afraid of exploring what the streets of Malaysia out there has to offer. The places you guys go and eat are awesome and your reviews are interesting and usually spot on! It’s just amazing cause I know a handful of foreigners based here in Malaysia whom refrain to eat local delicacies and just stick with their western diet. Lol! If you guys do ever come back, do give me a buzz and I’d be happy to provide recommendations on where else to eat, particularly in KL. However, If you do come by Malaysia again, I surely recommend that you include East Malaysia i.e. Sabah and Sarawak in your itinerary as these states have a lot to offer both in terms of food and also tourist destinations. Lastly, I’d like to wish you guys a merry Christmas and please keep up with the good work. Cheers, Ariffin Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Hi greetings from Malaysia. The reason why carrot cake is called carrot cake is that the white that you eat is the carrot. This is no orange carrot it is actually white carrots. I hope this would answer your question:)

the pure Malaysian food is came from Malay people itself others just represent it as malaysian. no race issued are include because frankly speaking the taste is different i mean the pureness of the taste, because so far as i know. if you want to eat the local food itself it must come from the exact makers like if i want to eat chinese food i'll go to the chinese restaurant just to feel the preserved taste and that might applied if i'm a tourist and wanting to have a pure taste, but for malaysian we don't care from what races made it as long as it's a Malaysian food, but if you came to Malaysia again you should find the pure local food that made by the malay people itself like the nasi campur, nasi minyak, satay with nut sauce gravy, nasi pulut with rendang all variety of Malay dessert we called kuih muih in general, bubur kacang, bubur pulut hitam, bubur cha cha, you might want to google it, but anyway thank you for represent malaysia.

Hi ! I'm a Malaysian studying abroad for 3 years now and seeing this video made me miss Malaysian food sooo much. Especially cendol, fried bananas and roti canai. It's lovely to see you guys trying lots of different Malaysian food and enjoying it! :) yes like the others said, nasi lemak, satay, nasi campur, nasi ayam (chicken rice) would be nice to be included in the part 2 of the video. And also i suggest ayam golek, nasi kandar, laksa penang, laksa johor, nasi dagang, nasi kerabu, nasi biryani and sooo many moreee :) although i've never eaten my roti canai with cheese, i was wondering how it would taste like. Oh and you should try mi goreng (fried mee) and char kway teow as well. My british friends love mi goreng. But i like mi goreng mamak. And i miss eating mi bandung and mi rebus. Ohmagerd sorry for the food list spam. Anyways i enjoyed your video! Thank you :)

The one taste like pad thai is not called carrot cake, dats why you cannot find a carrot in there . Its called Kuey Teow Goreng or Fried Kuey Teow. Try a gravy version 'Char Kuey Teow'. Bet u gonna like it too.

you should try malaysian seafood.. you can either go to jalan alor in KL or Klebang in Malacca.. There are many seafood restaurants there and not too expensive.. butter prawns, pari bakar (grilled stingray), siakap masam manis (sweet sour seabass) and kailan ikan masin (salted veg) are best eaten with rice with home made chilli sauce malaysian style..all of these foods combined together costs around RM 100( for 4 people) :)

Although gastronomy is an important topic, there are other topics such as history, geography, religion, art, science, crafts, architecture and other cultural and human manifestations in general, which are equal to or more important than gastronomy. Shite Ness In some countries, for cleanliness, the left hand is used for toilet cleaning oneself, therefore, only the right hand is used for eating if eating food with he hand. It is to prevent one from getting ill and transmitting disease. Samuel, as another Canadian, would understand this as a small joke to him and not an insult. Also, I would NEVER want to insult anyone.
