Sengkuang is jicama, a type of root vegetable. Calit in Malay means to smear or to douse something. So ‘sengkuang calit’ literally means jicama doused in sauce. Cendol is pandan flavored rice jellies or droplets, very popular all over Malaysia. I recommend you to try the regular one first because having it with durian can be overwhelming. Regular cendol is a simple dessert in shaved ice & palm sugar. Cendol itself is very mild in taste and perfect for one of those hot humid days.

There's a lot to learn and explore about Malaysia, our country is so underrated. If you went to Penang and Ipoh, you shall see and experience a lot of Chinese influences from food, buildings and cultures. Explore more of our cities to experience the local cultures especially with those that don't speak English. English fluent Malaysian speakers are apparently quite different from the not fluent ones, somehow... But they are all still lovely and friendly nonetheless.

Maybe you should try explore East Coast. There are plenty of beautiful islands like Perhentian or Redang in Terengganu. Or Tioman island in Pahang. Or if you like colder weather since you’re in Ipoh maybe you can go to Cameron Highlands which is in Perak/Pahang border. If you’re adventurous you can also try go to Kenyir Lake in Terengganu or National Park in Pahang. And also, explore the Malaysian Borneo (East Malaysia) Sabah & Sarawak for more beautiful islands, caves & rainforests.

Sengkuang is jicama. They put some sweet prawn paste. The cendol is made with green glutinous rice jelly, red beans, coconut milk (that's the basic). But i think yours has glutinous rice on top. By the way, cool haircut..very clean. I agree with you, not only Ipoh but the rest of the states are cool too. While you are there, try their famous chicken rice with their famous bean sprouts. They even have chicken baked in salt.

1:19 You probably know Singhalese refers to the majority ethnic group in Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Most came to Malaysia about hundred years ago brought by the colonial British to work as clerks and supervisors in government offices and plantations because they were largely conversant in English. Today of course their descendants are citizens of multiracial Malaysia.

your haircut is definitely on the higher end side but that price is normal for an established hairstylist... for me, usually i just go for a quickcut at shopping mall and it cost usd5 or so. 😂 but they don't take their time and it is really quick.. lol.. thanks for appreciating Malaysia. hope you will find more nice places around in malaysia...

Take a 50 min train ride to Taiping (day trip from Ipoh is possible if you dont plan to hike the Maxwell Hill). From the train station walk up to the Taiping Lake Garden (the oldest garden in Malaysia). Taiping was the capital before Ipoh, so lots of 'first' thing was built in Malaysia by the British. First museum, first train, first prison, lots more.. From Ipoh you can take a bus up to Cameron Highland. Please go during weekdays an non festive season. Otherwise it will be super crowded. From CH, you can start your east coast journey and visit islands like Kapas, Redang, or Perhentian. Penang and Ipoh are a food capital for non Malay food, but east coast (Kota Bharu namely) is the capital for traditional Malay food and culture. Wau (kite), Wayang Kulit (shadow puppet), Menora dancing, Songket knitting are the remnants from old malay kingdom (Sriwijaya) which could only be found in Kelantan. They might be communication issue in Kelantan though.

Ok Tom, if you're still in Ipoh and you're looking for interesting places and things to do here are a few you can try out.. 1) The han chin pet soo museum ( book your tour through the Ipoh world website. It's listed as one of the top independent museums by UNESCO if i rmbr correctly) 2) The Hor Yan Hor museum which is just next to Han Chin Pet Soo ( free entrance) 3) gua tempurung ( Coconut cave) - get a grab to take you there. 4) white water rafting - chk out either adeline resort or nomads adventure or gopeng rainforest resort 5) The Tin dredge in tanjung tualang 6) X-cape tambun - you can choose to go trekking with them 7) chk out the ipoh heritage trail (heritage trail map available from the tourism office) 8) u can also chk out the gopeng heritage trail.( ask the tourism office for info) 9) Kek lok toong - happiness cave ( this is a cave temple which is part of the geopark of perak) 10) Try the local delicacies. a) tau foo fah ( bean curd dessert) - most well known is funny mountain b) bean sprouts chicken - most well-known os lou wong but I wld recommend Oon Kee c) hor hee ( a kind of flat rice noodles in clear broth topped with slices of fish cake and chopped greens and chillies) - the most well known is in a coffee shop called loke wooi kooi - you can google it Hv fun

Ipoh is my hometown. Go for something off the beaten path like the ones you went for Sinhalese Bar and 90's Haircut. There are many more to explore in the state of Perak that less visited/reviewed by international RU-vidrs. One of the main reasons for Malaysia is underrated for American market is the lack of movies and TV shows that using Malaysia as filming location, although movies like Anna & The King, Crazy Rich Asians, Indochine, Beyond Rangoon etc. did use Malaysia as location replacing the original sites in Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar etc. Entrapment (1999) starring Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta Jones, Ving Rhames probably the last movie that featured Malaysia extensively (albeit incorrectly showing Petronas Twin Towers surrounded by slums by mixing the image of Kuala Lumpur and fisherman village in Melaka using CGI)
@joycetan4684
@joycetan4684 2 года назад
How true!!! Also because these American Productions want a combo of New & colonial backdrop of Malaysia hence the shots usually taken at villages/kampungs always portray that Malaysia is still backwards! 🙄😏 And the recommendation of our Tourism Board is also part of the factor. Many creative Malaysian Producers shared their experiences with me and said that their hands are tight when it comes to filming hence the long wait of the censorship board before it is allowed to be released. So, definitely Underrated!!!!! 🔨

Yep that's true, Malaysia is underrated ... Most foreigners when they want to visit Southeast Asia, then Thailand probably first popped up in their mind and not Malaysia and when they want to visit Southeast Asian beach then probably Bali beach in Indonesia came into their minds instead of Langkawi beach in Malaysia ... This could be due to d fact that Thailand as a Southeast Asian country and Bali beach in Indonesia are more known to them than Malaysia which is also located in Southeast Asia and Langkawi beach which could be found in Malaysia for example ... When i went overseas, some of them heard of Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore but some of them never heard of Malaysia ... And because of that, Malaysia even though it really is a beautiful country with its warm, hospitable, generous, friendly and helpful people with its beautiful diversities, unique and beautiful places of interests and multi, unique and beautiful cultures and varieties of delicious foods etc and generally a very safe country to visit and it should be known better by many more people than what it is known by d not so many as a beautiful Southeast Asian country to visit and a Southeast Asian country that has a lot to offer actually but sadly it is not extensively known as that today ... Sadly, so yes i agree with u that Malaysia is very underrated in that sense ....

I suggest you take the ETS train to Gemas. Then take the "jungle train" all the way to Wakaf Baru on the east coast state of Kelantan. Theres a sleepers coach on the jungle train, so you spend overnight onboard and arrive Wakaf Baru in the morning. Wakaf Baru is about 15mins away by grab to Kota Bharu, the state capital of Kelantan where you can sample unique traditional Malay cuisines such as Nasi Kerabu, Nasi Kukus and Laksam. You will feel another vibe of Malaysia on the East coast where life is on a slower pace. From Kota Bharu, you can travel to Kuala Besut (1 hour)..the gateway to Pulau Perhentian, a tropical island of beautiful white sandy beach. From Perhentian, you can then travel to Kuala Terengganu and catch different vibes there. Although predominantly Malay, lesser known facts is that Chinatown in Kuala Terengganu is one of the oldest chinese settlement in South East Asia. You can sample local food such as Nasi Dagang, Keropok Lekor, Celup Tepung (deep fried seafood) and many others.
