Yes, both sides must respect any decision of the United Nations. The sovereignty of Sabah and Sarawak as component states of Malaysia is intact, recognised internationally and recognised by the United Nations. This was confirmed and clearly stated in the United Nations Malaysia Mission Report "Final Conclusion of the Secretary-General of", 14 September 1963. The last sentence of the report says: "I fervently hope that the people of these territories will achieve progress and prosperity, and find their fulfillment as component states of Malaysia". Full text of the report can even be accessed from the Philippines Government Gazette website. Yes both sides (Malaysia and the Philippines) must respect the United Nations decision.

@@DeanMonio , "...autonomous region...."? Yes, they already have. With the help of Malaysia who facilitated them to have agreements with the Philippines Government. First, Malaysia facilitated the negotiation with MNLF (under Nur Misuari) and resulted in the formation of ARMM (Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao). Nur Misuari was appointed as the first Governor for 1 term; next governor should be through election. But Nur Misuari blew it because he wanted to be the governor for life. Next, another negotiation and agreement facilitated by Malaysia again, with MILF and resulted in the formation of BARMM (Bangsamoro Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao) which is still in existence until today. Without Sabah of course.

The payment was officially termed as "cession money" but in actuality it was merely a consolation for the heirs of the Sulu Sultan out of goodwill. Sulu only claimed that Sabah was given by Brunei to Sulu as a gift for purportedly helping Brunei fight rebels. But Brunei refuted this claim and denied ever having given Sabah to Sulu. There was NO DOCUMENT regarding the transfer of ownership of Sabah from Brunei to Sulu signed by both Sultans.

"...rent..."? Show proof that it was "rent". Show any "rent" agreement document that the name of the country "Malaysia" written in it. Sulu finally lost in various courts of appeal. Sulu lost in Paris Court of Appeal and failed to get the US$14.92B compensation awarded by Paris Court. Instead Sulu has to pay Malaysia €100,000 as legal cost imposed by Paris Court of Appeal. Sulu also lost in The Haque, Netherlands in their bid to enforce the arbitration award by Paris Court, and failed to seize Malaysian assets following the Paris Court of Appeal decision.

The United Nations had already decided that Sabah and Sarawak are component states of Malaysia. The sovereignty of Sabah and Sarawak as component states of Malaysia is intact, recognised internationally and recognised by the United Nations. This was confirmed and clearly stated in the United Nations Malaysia Mission Report "Final Conclusion of the Secretary-General", 14 September 1963. The last sentence of the report says: "I fervently hope that the people of these territories will achieve progress and prosperity, and find their fulfillment as component states of Malaysia".

the question on sabah claim has a question of who will benefit the claim? the family only of kiram being the sultan of sulu at the time it was given to sultan kiram as a debt in gratitude after he help the sultan of malaysia to quash a rebellion or the republic of the philippines. which is which.
