Malcolm Dam, Come to birdwatch, for a picnic or stay a few days. Whatever you choose, it's a lovely spot, especially when full of water. You can find Malcolm Dam approx 12kms south east from Leonora just off the Leonora to Laverton Road in the shadow of Mt Malcolm. Although Malcolm Dam covers a fair bit of land unfortunately when we took this video it was pretty dry so it looks like a patch of red earth with a few puddles on it :)
Malcolm Dam was built in 1902 on one of the tributaries of nearby Lake Raeside, to service the new steam trains coming to the region ( Menzies, Malcolm and Laverton ). As we know steam trains have now been replaced by diesel and electric trains. For Malcolm Dam, and many other dams scattered throughout Western Australia, this meant it was no longer needed to service the trains. Malcolm Dam has since become a Nature Reserve and is a nice location to do a spot of bird watching. Some of the birds we saw on our visit inlcude, the Shelduck, Spoonbill, White Faced and White Necked Herons, Black Fronted Dotterels and Emus, to name a few, and although not a bird, Kangaroos having a drink in the evening.
You can camp at Malcolm Dam and there is a picnic table near some info signs but other than that you need to be self sufficient. Malcolm Dam lies not far from the now ghost town of Malcolm ( originally called Mount Malcolm) which popped up after a gold find in 1895. The townsite of Malcom was declared in November 1896. As with most towns that pop up with a gold strike, it was short lived and by 1906 it was no more. At the height of it's growth in 1904, the town of Malcolm is reported to have had a population of 400-450 people. There were 200 stores and buildings including 6 hotels, several bakeries, and we read there was a swimming pool and gas street lights. Today, there are very few signs, if any, of the town's existance.
Malcolm Dam is on the traditional lands of the Wangkatha People.
