In this episode we'll be joined by Hamzah Baig to discuss his essay, '“Spirit in Opposition”: Malcolm X and the Question of Palestine': read.dukeupres...
We'll discuss the development and influences of Malcolm X's anti-zionist and pro-Palestinian liberation thought, as well as the context of a period in which many Black radical thinkers from the US maintained support for Zionism. We'll talk about his time in Egypt and in Gaza. And we'll also discuss the influence of the Nation of Islam and Malcolm X's anti-zionist pro-Palestinian stances on successive generations of Black anti-zionist thinkers and organizations including SNCC and Kwame Ture.
Hamzah Baig is a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara and received his Ph.D. in History from Yale University in 2023.
