In this video take a look at the rhythm guitar style and tone of rock and roll rhythm guitar legend Malcolm Young. Malcolm was the powerhouse behind the driving rock riffs of AC/DC. In this video I break down his gear of choice, dial in some Malcolm style tones with other gear and talk about his playing style via 5 classic AC/DC riffs and some tips and tricks to get some of his style into your playing.
In the video I am playing a Gretsch G5222 guitar which is plugged into a Kool Amplification 11 which is a 70s style Plexi amp. The amp is running into the Two Notes Captor X running an IR of a vintage 412. The drive comes from the J Rockett 45 Caliber which is a JTM45 style drive pedal based on the Malcolm Young crunch tone.

The guitar was actually gifted to him by Harry Vanda( producer of early AC/DC) as a standard Gretsch Firebird and he did the mods himself over the years. You can see the evolution of the guitar in film clips. Harry Vanda also said it was the best investment he ever made.

Malcolm Young? Say no more. I'm in 🤘 "Sin City", "Walk All Over You", "Beatin Around The Bush" some of my favorites. Hell, the entire AC/DC catalog is superb.
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 2 года назад
Sin City was on my brainstorm list for riffs! It was really hard to actually choose 5 riffs to be honest! He's got so many. I wanted to get big riffs in the video without going down the usual list of popular AC/DC riffs. That said... I did include Back in Black purely because of the space he leaves in the riff. I could have easily done 20 riffs and still not got everything awesome in there!

I read an interview with Angus Young many years ago and he said that he played the easy part and Malcolm had the difficult job keeping the tight rhythm
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 2 года назад
I wouldn't be surprised about that. Angus always loved how tight Malcolm was on stage. That's what I noticed when learning some of the riffs, there is a groove... but there is a tightness. He would downpick a lot too.

Hey Tim, welcome! Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment! Malcolm was a rhythm monster! I agree with you 100%, you think on the surface that the ACDC riffs are easy, they look easy enough on paper, but when you dig into it, there are small subtleties that are really hard to nail. Little timing things, or feel things, that you can just read off a tab.

Malcolm was the heartbeat, Angus was the soul, Bon and later, Brian, were the spirit. I was fortunate to have experienced AC/DC from the early 70s with the old late night radio stations that played the things that were not on mainstream radio programming. It was a station out of Georgia, and picked up in Florida.

I heard in a video that classic rock songs are sometimes sharp or flat because they used tape in the 70's, and the tape speed was changed in the studio. I believe you are right. It makes a lot more sense that they all tuned together and were slightly sharp or flat to a common note but in tune with each other. It's so cool that Malcolm didn't care about having a pretty guitar. His was a workhorse! He just cared about sound, another good reason to tune to each other rather than each to tune to a common note. I never get tired of AC/DC. Great music for motivating one's self!

I'm a 98% rhythm player. Taking some time off because of tendonitis in my left hand. Last gig was an 8 year stint with a full orchestra plus a conventional drummer, bass guitarist, and my self on guitar at a mega church. 4 services every Sunday plus shows and musicals....Strings, Horns, woodwinds, the works. Never solo. Don't want to. Never too good at it. Never cared. Other guitarist would say to me, "Do you want the first lead break or the last?" My response, "You take both". I must be doing something right. They keep calling me back. Play a Strat with only the middle and neck pickups. NEVER EVER use that shrill ice picky bridge pickup. EVER. Took it out years ago and gave it to a friend who needed one when his took a dump when he had a gig that night. That was 12 years ago. Never replaced it. Switch position #1 is a kill switch, which comes in handy. Main amp for all those years was my Fender Super Champ. Sound guy either put a mic on me, or used the Line Out. No muss, no fuss. Rhythm Rules.

' Mark was replaced in '77 after pissing both of the Young brothers off , I saw Cliff Williams first Aussie show at the Legendary Lifesaver in '77 . Williams didn't have a work permit and they were billed as ' Mystery High Voltage Act ' ... Apparently close to 3,000 in a room licensed for 1,000 ... I left thinking Malcolm was the star of the show . Angus and Bon entertained the punters , but Malcy WAS the band .

I wouldn't be surprised if Malcolm even had his Marshall amps modified. He had them sent out so the volume knobs would go from 0 to 11.

Those tones are spot on. I've always fancied a Gretsch Signature Malcolm Young, but it's a little pricey! Maybe I should get a G5222 and mod it to look like a MY easy enough :-)
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 2 года назад
The Gretsch Malcoms are like 15k haha! Not cheap at all!! This is a good alternative though, it's not quite the same... but it's a hell of a lot more affordable. Gretschs are rock solid too, they play great and sound great!

I actually got a G5222 double jet and absolutely adore it, there's not one single thing about it that doesn't impress. It's so nice , that as much as I would love to make it look like a Mally Young Gretsch, I just can't bring myself to change its looks/feel/sound. Maybe one day I will go "Malcolm" on it , but until then its such a nice instrument, I'll enjoy it for how good it is (as is ) . Did you decide to get the G5222? If so, what do you think of it ? Rock hard always dude :)

Could i get mal’s tone with my Marshall dsl40 im also getting a Gretsch double jet electromatic tomorrow 😁
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 2 года назад
Absolutely! The DSL40 can easily get you into the AC/DC tone, but don't push the gain too hard. The DSL range has way more gain than the style of Marshall's that Malcolm would have used. You want to keep the gain low to retain the clarity of the notes.
@jacob_miller
@jacob_miller Год назад
You probably had this sorted out 8 months ago but for anyone else chasing this with a DSL40; A V30 goes really great in the DSL40c, on the classic gain channel with crunch engaged crank the amp up a bit more and dial back the master on the Gretsch by about 15%. The studio sound has less gain than their live tone on back in black etc so use the master on the Gretsch to control gain to taste

Which amp settings are you using with the caliber 45?
@LeighFugeGuitar

I talk about the amp settings at 6:50 in the video and more at the 12 minute mark. There is also a shot of the amp so you can see what I'm doing. It's set with the Bass on 1, Mid on about 6 and Treble on about 7 from memory. I had the amp clean and the 45 doing all the drive

I don't believe Malcolm bought his Gretsch, I believe it was a gift from Harry Vanda, his older brother George's bandmate from The Easybeats and decades-long writing and producing partner.

The 45 Caliber pedal is good but imo the MI Audio Super Crunchbox V2 is THe best, and most versatile, Marshall in a box pedal. It does everything great from early Plexi through to modern Marshall high gain plus EVH brown sound. It's low noise, true bypass and cheap :)

@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar Год назад
Nope. Back in the early days there wasn’t many pedals on the market at all. They just cranked their Marshall’s! To this day Angus still gets his sound from cranking the amps up loud. He runs a preamp unit infront called a Solo Dallas but onstage he doesn’t have any pedals. He gets everything from riding the guitar volume

Malcolm Young didn't buy the Firebird. It was given to him by Harry Vanda of Vanda and Young (Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young - Malcolm and Angus' older brother) fame. Harry Vanda famously said later that had he known the end results he would have given him ten firebirds.
