Male Headship: Is it REALLY Biblical? Women in Ministry part 8

It's undeniable that the Bible explicitly teaches that a husband is the "head" of his wife. While church history has pretty much always believed this means the husband is the primary leader in the marriage and household there has been serious pushback against this view from egalitarian scholars in more recent years.
Time Stamps!!
0:00 - Intro
1. 10:33 - Part 1: Medical Claims That "Head" Means "Source"
2. 31:47 - Part 2: Bible Context Claims That "Head" Doesn't Imply "Authority"
3. 54:20 - Part 3: Church History Argument
4. 1:01:10 - Part 4: The Battle of Lexicons; does kephale mean authority?
5. 1:33:33 - Conclusions
Their basic contention is that "head" doesn't mean what you probably think it means when you read it in Scripture as the description of the relationship between husbands and wives. They tend to offer 4 main arguments to support their case.
1) In the Greek speaking world of New Testament times, general medical opinion was that the heart or liver controlled the body while the head was merely the "source" of nutrition. The egalitarians say that we need to factor in this popular medical understanding of "head" or we will mistakenly think the husband is the leader of his wife.
2) Egalitarian scholars say that when you look carefully at Paul's use of the metaphor "head" and the specific context of the passages when it is used you come to see that Paul is NOT meaning to imply anything about authority but is speaking of nourishment or source. For instance, they will say that man is the source of woman in the sense that Eve was formed from Adam. Adam was her source.
3) Surprisingly, some Egalitarians will actually share a quote from Chrysostom to show that one of the church fathers understood perfectly well that this term "head" didn't mean to imply authority. Catherine Kroeger, founder of CBE promotes this view and many echo her.
4) Finally, we get to the biggest one. They will claim that the Greek word translated "head" really means "source" and not "authority." I've found that egalitarians will repeatedly make very similar claims that ancient lexicons do not support the meaning of "authority" and that one very respected lexicon in particular (the LSJ) defends their case.
I'm going to analyze each of these claims to see what the Bible really says about husbands being the head of their wives. This is super important because it doesn't just impact who is in church leadership, it impacts every single marriage in the body of Christ!
After years of being a bit confused about the topic of women in ministry I set out to spend months researching the topic in great detail to produce this exhaustive teaching series on the topic. This is part 8.

Using Plato to determine Paul's meaning of a word would be like reading Shakespeare to define the meaning of words used by Mike in this video. "When Mike said 'brave' he must have meant handsome, because that's how Shakespeare used it!"

Mike, you are pouring yourself out like a drink offering to do this series. My brother, I do so appreciate the massive amount of labor you have put into preparing and teaching. However other listeners were affected by all of this word study today, it made me bend my knee in deep surrender to the Lord's intent. So between the Holy Spirit working through you and working on me through you, just know that as far as this one listener today is concerned, you did your job and did it well: mission accomplished.

I've felt women pastors is wrong for some of scriptures but mostly in the context the church was contending with paganism which was transexuals, women priestesses with shorn heads as temple prostitutes and strange babblings from these pagan religions which most gentiles were part of.

Secondary issues are important because they so often lead to primary issues. Primary issues are obviously more important because in spiritual triage you want to address issues that will jeopardize salvation first but secondary issues are less an open wound and more a poison. If not treated it can open you up to primary issues. Treat both as very dangerous even though one is monumentally more dangerous than the other.

Well done! The main thing I've learned so far is that when the motive is PURELY to find out what the Bible actually teaches, you will find it. But when the motive is to make the Bible agree with your pre-conceived ideas scholarship goes out the window. Sadly they know it's not being honest to use bits of quotes etc so there is no fear of the Lord. "itching ears".

Thank you so, so much for this series Mike. This one is possibly the clearest, most well presented and most powerful yet! I'm in the UK where the church as a whole is heavily dominated by egalitarianism. I have spent most of my Christian life in egalitarianism and assuming it was right, but have begun to really question it and do the research for myself over the past 18 months. I've been so thrilled that you've done this series. Today's session has been a huge confirmation of what I feel in my own conscience. The more myself and my husband begin to understand how God intends us to posture ourselves in our marriage, the more freedom I'm finding to embrace biblical womanhood and be at peace that I don't have to compete to look and behave like my husband. Being faithful to God's design brings with it such a blessing 🙂. Thanks again Pastor Mike for all your hard work!

I study Ancient Greek, Latin and Hebrew, and I'm flabbergasted by these arguments they used about the meaning of the word κεφαλή, since the word is also quite frequently used to pinpoint what's the most important aspect of a phrase (which does denote domain over a topic). Maybe, just maybe, they mixed up their data of the Greeks, and got the Ancient Egyptian notions into the debate instead (since it was through Ancient Egyptian custom that the heart was known for bringing emotion and having a link with one's soul). I'm trying really hard to follow the old saying: "do not attribute something to malice, when it can be easily explained by ignorance", but, man, do they make it hard... Also, I cannot find this meaning of "source" in any place outside of this debate. Maybe it also meant source in Koiné? I dunno, but I cannot find such use outside of this debate, neither I find it in good Ancient Greek dictionaries.
@au7-721
@au7-721 2 года назад
So basicaiiy you can choose from all these sources to twist the scriptures to say what you want them to say. Simply put you don't believe the Bible. You can't. Not if you are constantly trying to correct it. Its funny. If Greek is such a clear concise language how is it that religions and cults all go to Greek to prove their various doctrines which all contradict one another. I actually dont believe what you said anyway. You are lying and simply trying to cast doubt on the Bible.
@feleslucis-emanueldearaujo6237
@feleslucis-emanueldearaujo6237 2 года назад
@@au7-721 wait? What? No source treats κεφαλή as "source of something". The pastor did a good job demonstrating that too. My comment basically matches what he's saying on the video, so I don't understand where you're coming from with these accusations. Ancient Greek is a greatly concise language. However, you have to understand that not all languages work the same, and translations may end up losing some nuance and aspects that were obvious for the original speakers, but that may be differently perceived by modern students. Because of this, there are people who use the commonplace ignorance of what the originals say to push corrupted ideas on modern people. We can see many cults doing that, especially the ones who defend the idea that homossexuality is OK according to the Bible. They simply ignore the facts at hand, the long Church history, and the cultural and religious history, while focusing on aspects that shouldn't even be considered, such as them saying that homossexuality is not used in the Bible (while ignoring this is a word that was poorly devised by a German who knew very little about Latin and Greek word formation in the XIX century).

Kudos on highlighting the Grudem/Cervin debate; I came across it around 4 years ago because of a sermon series at the church I was attending, where the theme was about gender roles in the church and family and the lead pastor essentially publicized the church's long-held (as of 1992) stance that 'kephale' = source, prompting some investigation that brought up the back-and-forth between Grudem and Cervin. Very glad to see it get some significant exposure, and I hope it's as helpful/clarifying for others as it was for me.

Really appreciate this series. It has been alongtime that I have been waiting for something that makes sense from a Biblical point of view in this discussion. I have read whatever egalitarian books fellow believers have offered me and they always seemed to fall short. As much as I wanted to be convinced by them, and then have this annoying complimentarian viewpoint erased... it just never seemed to fit Biblically. Having a series that goes nack and looks at the source material and quotes from egalitarian scholars helps to put this in a proper light. It also inspires me personally, to step up and prayerfully take hold of the responsibility for leading. It feels intimidating, but also I know that I need to. Stepping forward in leading, by example of sacrifically serving, taking initiative, making decisions, following through. Thanks Mike.

I’ve had a hard time with the headship/submission debate because I come from a abusive/trauma-filled background where this concept was constantly abused. Because of the amount of hurt I’ve been through, it’s been really hard for me to desire this model because of the lack of trust I have towards many men. I probably met 1 guy in my 29 years on earth who I thought was a good leader. So I guess my question is, how do people with trauma overcome their hurt and pain so they could be more biblical followers of Christ? I also wonder how many women who endorse the egalitarian model come from abusive backgrounds.
@scottsimon9435
@scottsimon9435 2 года назад
First off, I am so sorry to hear of your abusive and traumatic background. I pray for healing and full recovery for you by the power of God who is able to work all things for good to those who love Him and submit to Him. I also hope that if the effects of your background are still a physical or spiritual burden to you, that you will seek to find a solid female Christian counselor who can walk you through a recovery and healing process. Second, hopefully you can acknowledge that while your experience with male leaders has not been good thus far, the ability to mistreat and abuse other people is not limited only to the male gender. There are plenty of accounts of women having authority over children or men have also abused their authority. Abuse and bad leaders come from a fallen, sin-cursed world that we live in and every human being must submit to God if they are to be free of these actions and behaviors. The solution is for men, women, and children to seek the LORD and submit entirely to Him first and foremost. He is indeed a perfect leader, and He has the very best intentions towards those who come to Him by faith and seek His love, mercy and grace. When fallen humans put obedience to God as their highest priority, and then actually follow His commands they will also be honorable and trustworthy with regards to how they treat others. Beware of hypocrisy of course. God calls us to surround ourselves with and to follow such leaders who are above reproach just as God has called and appointed them to that role. We can know who such honoroable leaders are the fruit they bear for the Kingdom (still with caution though). I pray you will find such people in your life and that God will show you how perfect His Word and His divine order for families and the church are when people properly submit to Him and obey His word. If not already in one, I also pray you will find a healthy church fellowship that demonstrates God’s love and truth in their everyday lives. Also, I hope you feel free to separate from people and relationships where any level of abuse is occurring presently in your life. You must establish proper boundaries in relationships so that abusers cannot hurt you any longer. Hope that helps. Blessings and brotherly love in Jesus Christ!

Hello, I suggest you do not allow yourself to be led by your fear....God di not give you a spirit of fear & the word of God calls women to be daughters of Sarah who called her husband "lord".....this doesn't mean you're a doormat, it just means that you're a woman full of the holy spirit and his fruit, look at all the good women in the Bible, none of them were disobedient to their husband's or a thorn on his side....again, women are made to be help mates to their man and that is the position you should seek....don't be led by your fear because God didn't give you a spirit of fear...God bless.

I also wonder how many women become egalitarian with abusive backgrounds as well. While I have no relatable experience with church hurt because I was born again later in life, I do have trauma and pretty extreme abuse in my past. The more I remember that my old life died at the cross, the more free I feel. Also remember, the Lord knows what your betrayals and rejections feel like and he will always be there to comfort you. I pray you heal.

My wife and I have been studying this for the past year, and the egalitarian arguments against husband's being authorities always seemed "off" to me, but I didn't know why. If the husband is the head of the wife, who is the head of unmarried women? Christ? ---or is the head of unmarried women her pastor? That puts the pastor in a precarious position. Does he have time to answer all the needs and questions and make decisions for all the unmarried women in his church and lead them as a husband would? Does he want to even do that? And if he is married that puts another whole dynamic in the situation of leading unmarried women. So if the head of unmarried women is Christ, they have a much better head as married women only has a fallible men and perhaps unreliable or even abusive, as their head? Even if the husband is good and kind, that puts the husband in a very precarious position because he will never be the equal of Christ.

Amazing mind blowing work Mike! The work you have put into this series is showing up. Your genuine heart for truth is apparent every time I listen. I would assert that egalitarian scholars are not ignorant of the truth but would prefer to stay in an echo chamber that supports their worldview and selfish desires. I have seen many people on platform that wholeheartedly embrace these views and use story telling and extreme examples of abuse to make their case for the evils of patriarchy. They like to pick on evangelicals and complimenatrian views but oddly avoid any mention of views in other faiths that clearly denigrate women. I cannot thank you enough for your clarity and thorough teaching through this series. I want to know and follow the truth. God Bless!!

Pastor Mike, I cannot thank you enough for this series. As someone who has recently graduated from a Bible college, it is so hard to find quality, Biblical, and free resources to use when researching weighty topics such as women in ministry. During school, I had a female friend who deeply wanted to become a theology professor, but wasn’t sure what she actually believed regarding it. I remember feeling so distraught that I didn’t know how to approach the topic biblically, without allowing emotions to play a factor. @@chaboi7 Thank you for your advice, I appreciate it. The thing is, she is submissive in how she lives her life and how our dynamic works spiritually and otherwise. However, she will not acknowledge it as she feels that means she is of lesser worth/value. A lot of the issues she has with it have to do with her being raised in a pseudo-Christian cult that had a very lowly opinion of women. Essentially, she believes that if women are not exactly equal to men in their role capabilities (being a pastor, male headship) than there is no point for women if they cannot attain the same roles within Church or leadership as men. Trying to explain the complementarian view for her just doesn't appear to stick. One way or another it always unravels to her past trauma. It's never an easy discussion to have.

If Egalitarians want to claim head in the verse simply means "source" and has nothing to do with authority they have to immediately affirm that likewise Christ has no authority over His own church, Paul says the exact same thing with the exact same word about Jesus and His church.
