We’re going to have a full episode of Collider Ladies Night with Malin Akerman for her new release To The Stars (which is now available to watch on digital) for you next week on the main Collider RU-vid channel, but to tease the full conversation, we’re bringing you the portion of the interview that focused on Watchmen. Personally? I’m a fan of the film, but it did get a mixed response when it hit theaters back in 2009, and Akerman was hit was a good deal of criticism for her performance as Laurie (aka Silk Spectre II). At that point in her career, Akerman had appeared in a bunch of comedies like The Heartbreak Kid, 27 Dresses and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. Watchmen was a completely different kind of film.
While we were discussing her knack for comedy, I asked Akerman if she had a clear vision of her goals as an actor when she was first starting out, but she told me that at that point in time, she was new to the filmmaking world and didn’t know much about it. She even said, “I was truly a follower,” and took whatever came her way. When I asked her what opportunity helped her put her longterm goals into focus more, that's when she brought up Watchmen. Check it out in this clip from Collider Ladies Night!

Malin! You were perfect casting for Watchmen, never doubt yourself, Silk Spectre's sex appeal was off the charts, one of the best graphic novels ever and one of the best gritty comic books movies ever made, say what u want about Zack Snyder but this is one film I'd give him credit for

It's a whole lot of things I didn't like about the Watchman movie but Malin Akerman was not one! I though she was a bright spot in that movie (could've sworn she got nominated for an award, not an academy one but still) it's awesome she's pushing her craft to the next level and I hope Marvel or DC is watching her. Would love to see what she can do now in a blockbuster.

She was perfectly cast in Watchmen...everything she was feeling apparently made her performance even better. Her sex appeal is off the charts too....she's so hot that she doesn't know how hot she is...lava.

I really liked what Malin did with Laurie and I think that a lot of that strength is in its difference from the novel. In the novel, Laurie is extremely cynical, jaded and disillusioned, and somewhat selfish. This obviously all stems from how she had allowed the superhero fad to dominate her formative years at her mother's whim, leaving room for nothing and nobody else after costumed heroes are outlawed. To add to this, her alter-ego only ever serves as a means for escapism and thrill-seeking rather than a service to the victimised and abused (though not to the same extremes as Dan). In the film however, Laurie is played more sympathetically, and though she still has her moments of frustration with Jon, the government and of course her mother, it never veers into bitterness or resentment, and I find Malin instils Laurie with a calm maturity and level-headedness, which in an ensemble cast that is otherwise composed of men with various personality disorders and bleak outlooks on humanity, is somewhat refreshing when it comes to condensing 12 chapters into 3 hours. In the novel it is made clear that none of the main six are truly virtuous people and they all make for terrible heroes, but in the film I feel like Laurie is the best of them in terms of morality.
