Malka Moma Dvori Mete is a traditional bulgarian song. Performed by Philip Koutev National Folk Ensemble. This song appeared in the 1991 anime Only Yesterday.
I am Bulgarian and grew up with that song. My mom was singing it while cleaning the house and as a lullaby for us kids. I soooo love it. There are many other versions of it, but this one is definitely the purest and the best. Thanks for posting it! 🥰

An absolutely haunting, beautiful, lonely piece of music. In Paku-san's hands, it joins with pastoral images of farmers picking flowers at the morning sun peaks over mountains. It's one of the greatest scenes ever created in cinema. I get verklempt every time I watch it (except only once).
4 years ago, I travelled the Japanese countryside in a campervan with my partner. It was a very beautiful time. Hearing this and seeing the scenes of Taeko doing the same never fails to strike a very deep chord in me and takes me back in a way even my memory struggles to do. I doubt the countryside ever looked as awe inspiring as it does in Only Yesterday, but for the time being, these sounds and images remind me that it MAY have been. RIP Takahata.
Watched this movie for the first time with my Bulgarian GF without knowing the movie featured traditional music from her home country lead to a surprising watching experience

It's about a young girl that's cleaning the yard of her house while crying. Her uncle passes by and asks her why crying rather than singing(Traditionally it was typical for women to sing while working). She tells him that her parents are going to marry her to a friend's son, but she doesn't want to as she is yet young and stupid and has never even loved anyone.

I'm Bulgarian and I'd love to translated it for you: A little maiden is sweeping the courtyard Both sweeping and crying Chorus: Radka, maiden, little maiden (The chorus doesn’t really make sense in English... the singer is basically addressing the little maiden whose name is Radka. This line is repeated after every verse except the final one. BTW, Radka is a very traditional Bulgarian name, pet-form of Rada :) ). Why are you sweeping and crying, Why are you not sweeping and singing? Chorus How should I sweep and sing When mother wants to have me engaged Chorus Mother wants to have me married And I am still young and have seen nothing of the world Chorus I have not yet been to the dances I have not yet worn any giddy clothes I have not yet had a sweetheart That’s it. :) It’s a very simple song but it makes me tear up every time I listen to it. She sings "mother wants to have me engaged" and then "FATHER wants to have me married". Also, more importantly, the final line of the song can be translated as " I didn't have time to love my sweetheart" which changes the whole song, as it suggests she was in love with someone already but her family wanted to marry someone else.
