Thank you for taking the time to help us learn the basics. This is so helpful right now with everyone on lockdown. Please ignore the negative comments and know so many people (and pets) are grateful for your help.
Your better than some of the professional groomers putting up videos. Thanks for the advice. I'm also trying to groom my own dog. After taking her to 5 or so different places over a couple of years and watching my dog get so stressed I decided it would be better to try it on my own. I'm getting better with each groom and she is also getting better. She loves the blow dry now.
Cheryl Deitz thanks dear! I appreciate your comments :-) that was the same reason I started grooming my own dog as well. It is definitely a learning curve but with time you will have more confidence and get really good, let me know if you have any questions.
Excellent video. I appreciate your detailed explanation not only of the grooming but keeping her calm for grooming. Your temperament has a lot to do with it too. I am relaxed listening to you. Well Done!
Beautiful job Tatiane, good example for owners to learn the basics of a mini-groom to keep their dog looking good.... plus you bond with your dog and you learn how to handle your pup and finally you save some money also... Save the $$$ for the full groom. Thanks for video.
Marilyn Thompson thank you so much for your nice comment! I love reading positive comments from my watchers! :-) let me know if you have any questions.
I just got a Shih Tzu puppy and I want to start grooming him myself. Your video is helpful and encouraging. I was looking at the same dry shampoo on Amazon that you are using and was relieved to hear you say it smelled good. You're so sweet to your fur baby and both of you are so calm. He looks marvelous! :)
Thank you for the quick reply. Just ordered mine. I have a 7 month old male Maltese and grooming has just gotten so expensive. Appreciate the tutorial. I’m your new subscriber 😊
@@sapphire6107 congrats on the new puppy! And yeah grooming can get so expensive and sometimes is not even how you want so might as well save money. Having the right tools help! My little girl is turning 14 years old this month 🥰
My dog is 5 and I've only had her for about a year-and-a-half it's very expensive to have her groom so I've been doing the best I can and thank you for the tips I did go and buy those Clippers. She will not let me touch her feet at all so I'm still working out of work today and thank you
I have one of these dogs it was really nice seeing how you groom your dog , I have been using thinning shears on the body part, this was very helpful to thank you
I love, that You respect and love Your dog and that You take scissors to make her front paws! You're great!!! And Your dog is so beautiful and such a nice girl! And - Your groom is really good! Thank You very much!
Thanks for this informative video. I just got my puppy Maltese (9.5 weeks) old and I'm not sure she will be still enough just yet, but I can't wait till she's a bit older to use some of your tips. : )
I like your vid-you're a great teacher. You have the ability to keep your audience focused without the background music. That took away from the importance of learning the skill sets you use. JSYK. Maybe someone all ready commented about it? This vid is old now. haha right? Seriously you don't need that other distraction you have a gift and only need to share that...
you are amazing I just subscribed , My fur baby Chloe looks like yours how old is she: I have been doing her grooms but have learned so much by watching your video today. Do you have full groom videos too. I have taken her for grooms and she has had mobile grooms but like the way I do her better. Your tips will help so much thanks again .
our maltese yorkie hides at bath time but is good once in tub I let her roll on big towel before blowing dry .. she usually sits when ready for it.. then jumps on my lap for the brush out with the ...no hair tangles brush I found a the dollar store it never pulls and does a great brush out
I have a mix breed puppy. He is a cross between a Maltese and a schnuzier. He doesn't stay still very well. I've tooken him to a groomer twice and he looks good but I want to learn how to do it myself. Any tips or ideas for me?
Liz Slafkes the grooming table really helps to get them to stay still because it has a neck collar attached to it so they can’t really be moving around. You need consistency for them to get used to you grooming them so start by brushing him always in the same place you want to groom him. Make the sessions longer each time until he gets the hang of it. Once you have all your grooming tools and pick the day you want to do his grooming make sure he gets a nice long walk so he can be tired and not move so much during the grooming. I suggested start only by partially grooming him so that the session is not too long. I have a few videos on basic grooming you can check out and in the description box I mention all the products I like to use! Hope that helps and happy grooming!
Great video. I know this video is six years old but I hope it’s still active. I started grooming my Maltese. I liked the pink round table with the pole. What’s the name of that?
@@sapphire6107 I got it on Amazon. You can search for this: Pet Edge Master Equipment Round Pet Grooming Table - Rotatable Black 18” Diameter Grooming Table Perfect for Small Dogs And it should come up. It’s around $60 and totally worth it for at home grooming! Hope that helps
Hi Brigitte I have another video specifying where I got all the tools I use. But you can search online on Amazon for grooming table and you’ll find something similar 👍🏼 hope that helps.
Yes that is why it is good to learn to do it at home, besides saving money you get to build a bond with your dog. Let me know if you have any question and what other videos you would like to see. thanks!
She is already used to me grooming her, she is seven years old and I have been grooming her myself for the past 6 years. It is a learning game for both me and her. In the beginning it was harder but now she is used to it. You got to make your puppy nice and tired before the grooming so that they cooperate more. Go for a long walk and play fetch with your dog before grooming. Desensitize your pet with grooming tools and associate it with something rewarding by using treats. Let me know if you have any other questions. Hope that helps! Thanks.
hi..loved your video, and your lil doggie..can i ask what breed she is please, she looks just like my new rescue dog..which i was told a bichon cross..thx
Good job good advice too! Cute Maltese gently handling on her groom posted to my Maltese fb groups Maltese Fairytales FB Group and Maltese Puppy Love Fb GRP & Maltese & Furbabies FB GRP for all my members ok thank you for sharing your Maltese video here
I have a 9 mo old Maltese and she is very sweet but has tear staining. How do you keep your Maltese so white around her eyes? I have tried so many different products but...
My dog stated to aggressive. If she’s just sitting beside you and you wanna pick her up and move her she will growl at you if I had her off to my daughter because I have to go somewhere or something she will growl and try to bite her don’t want to be with someone else I don’t know how this happened
The only comment I have is that if you use a collar on your dog’s neck while grooming, never leave the room. There are some incidences in my area where the dog fell of the table and was seriously and permanently injured from hanging. Please use an over the shoulder sling...always!
First you need to desensitize your dog. You can do that by getting him used to you touching his face. Start by petting or massaging his face and rewarding him with treats or praise. Then get him used to the tools by getting it close to his face and rewarding good behavior. You will want to associate grooming with something fun and rewarding, do not force him or it will only make it harder for yourself to cut the hair on his face. Before I groom my dog I take her on a long walk around the neighborhood, get her nice and tired so she cooperates better. She is motivated by treats so I always reward her with small treats to tell her she is doing a good job. Eventually he will learn that grooming is not painful and is rewarding. Dogs learn on repetition, you just got to have patience and keep doing it everyday. Hope that helps :-)
Melissa Oliva hi I got it from Walmart.com it’s called “ go Pet club rotating grooming table”. It’s very convenient and sits on the counter. They have three different colors!
@@TatysLifestyle can you take it off and on counter easily or no? Great job by the way. Adorable dog. I have a 13 month old maltipoo boy I adopted when he was about 6 months. He usually gets groomed but I recently past few weeks been bathing and drying him and getting him used to that in between. Oh there are great tools on Amazon, I got a 2 in 1 blow dryer/ slicker brush that is great and fast to get him dry and brushed out. If interested let me know I'll send a link!
Monica CannaMiss yes the grooming table I use is portable and can be used anywhere really. I like to place it in the countertop and when I’m done I store it inside my bathroom cabinets it fits well. Very convenient.
My daughter wants their Kiwi to come live with me...she's a Maltese...she's lonely because they don't have necessary time to be with her and train her. I'm nervous about taking her. She's a sweetheart like your girl. I don't know what to do???
James anonymous hi thanks for watching the video, in this video I was just showing the trims around paws and face not clipping her down. If you would like to see how to groom the entire body checkout my other video titled “grooming at home” and you will see how I use clippers to cut her hair. Hope that helps.
Chloe Boyd I live in Parkland (south Florida) and that’s the average price for a tidy up around here. If you just want a bath it will cost $25. Anything more than you pay more. How much does it cost in your area?
Professional Groomer here. Please don't. In 6 weeks. I'll have to fix this. The brush will leave dead hair and your looking at a bald dog in the end. Or it'll cost you a bunch more at the vets office when you cut that pad or other area. Take a class to learn to do this. Safely! Thanks from your dog.
Sensation Of Peace The brush she is using will not remove dead hair! Skin plus hair plus dirt = Matts which can not be brushed out but have to be shaved off. Use a comb to double check. Further, if the dog jerks the paw or sanitary area can be cut Requiring stitches, causing infection and pain. Every time I watch this I'm afraid she'll cut the dog. I know she doesn't, but how many watching this WILL cut their own dog's skin. Shears pointed at the eyes, squeezing the dogs face... Too much else to actually mention here but this is not the answer to home grooming. Please don't. Watch another video from a real Groomer and you will see the differences. The most important part of being able to groom your own dog is doing nails, ears and tooth brushing, proper washing and brushing! Those are the "healthcare' of grooming. Leave the cutting to professionals please. Or take a class first.
Donita Jackson thanks for your input! But just to clarify, I have been grooming her for the past 6 years with no problems or accidents. The very reason I started grooming her myself was because during Her first year of life I went through several groomers and could not find one that would not hurt her or simply cut her hair to my liking. First it was bleeding nails when they would go in too short in the quick, then Knicks around her groin, then they would shave her nose bridge, which I always hated, not to mention when she came home “butchered” and the groomer just blamed her for “being too hyper and moving around too much”. It got to the point she would not even walk into the groomers because she was traumatized. I have been cutting her hair since and I admit I’m no professional but I did watch Grooming videos from professionals and I do what I feel is best for my dog. It might not seem like in this video but I do take my time so I don’t hurt her and thank goodness I never have. I do use different types of brushes to brush her coat to remove dead hair and also a comb as you see on 3:15 of the video. I don’t mean to take your job, or take away from the Grooming business this is just what is best for her. Every time I walk her or take her to the park I have nothing but compliments on her beautiful and shiny white coat and haircut. I have friends that also have Maltese dogs and they actually take a picture of my dog to show it to their groomers to do the same cut. I do appreciate your time and concern for my dog :-) but rest assured she is in good hands, check out her ig for more pictures! @nala_themaltese
I am just learning how to groom my Malti-poo and am not sure of the blade sizes and how long or short they will leave her. I borrow my neighbors clippers for now, she owns 10 dogs and groom them herself she advised me to a use a #10 for the butt and under the arm and a #7 for the rest of the body. Is this correct? I don't want my baby to look like a rat (usually how she looks once she returns from the groomer. They advised me they use a #10 all over and I don't like that look at all.
The blade 7 will leave you with about 1/8 hair length which is slightly a little bit longer than the blade 10 which leaves the hair 1/16 in length. You can always do blade 10 with a comb attachment to make the hair a little bit longer. You can buy the comb attachments on amazon for less than $20 and each comb guide will tell you the length, so you can pick the one that leaves your malti-poo with longer hair. I use blade 10 with a 1/8 comb attachment and it leaves me with almost 1inch of hair which to me is the perfect length. It is short enough that she doesn't get matted but still long enough to make her look fluffy. Hope that helps!
Hi thank you so much for your videos! I'm about to start grooming my maltese myself since the quarantine started my baby needs it! I do have a question though, alot of the clippers I'm seeing online have an angled tapered attachment, where would I use that or would I even need to?
You have to clean their eyes and around the eyes every day to keep it white. I use a fine tooth comb to remove the eye boogers and a tear staining wipe to clean it afterwards. Also I only give her filtered water and she does not eat any colorful food or treats because those cause staining as well. Hope that helps !

Tatiane Sassaki thanks ! He bites me a lot and cant sleep only by putting his face on mine and lick me everywhere. He cant be left alone without yelling and crying. Even when he eats he needs me near. Which makes me a little unconfortable sometimes.
My elderly Maltese is in congestive heart failure and no groomer wants to take him on. I want to learn how to groom him myself. Like you, I only want to do as much as he is comfortable with and not force him. Thank you so much for showing me some grooming tips. I really like the way you trimmed the paw upside down when you rounded it. I will defiantly try that.
