Mama Duck built her nest in the blueberries for the second year, and successfully hatched a nestful of ducklings again! This video shows her last week of sitting on the eggs. She's picked a quiet spot in a busy neighborhood to lay her eggs. The blueberry irrigation stays off until after she & her ducklings have moved to the pond behind her. You can hear the wildlife, especially the frogs, in the overnight video!

Yes! She sits on those eggs for a month, and nothing can deter her from her mission to hatch them. I scared her away briefly before I realized she was there because I almost stepped on her. Gave me quite a fright too. But she came back within an hour after I left the area. She got used to me checking the camera and would not move a muscle as I came and went. So sweet!

Thank you so much! Life is good in the summer garden. Just discovered yet another duck nesting in an iris bed and have the trail cam set up to record her journey.

@@langlaisjean-claude9418 The father is a local male mallard duck! He is very 'attentive' to the female early in the season. He helps her find a safe place to nest, and stays close to her until she has laid all of her eggs, as he wants to make sure each egg is fertile! Then, once the mama duck starts sitting on the eggs, he goes back to the pond! He does not have any duties to the nest.

What do they eat that whole time? Nothing?

Thanks to the trail cam, I learned that she leaves the nest for a couple of hours every day, usually towards late afternoon. I assume she uses this break to get a bite to eat and drink. Several years ago, I left food and water near a duck nest...and then I realized this created a huge stress for the mama duck, as food and water attract other animals, including predators. The ducks choose their nesting locations to be inconspicuous and, hopefully, remote enough to protect them.
